3 Steering Column problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 08/22/2020

The vehicle is stationary. Proceed to start vehicle. Steering column locks up. Has occurred several times. I am the third owner of this vehicle. In researching information regarding past recalls apparently hedrick's dealership of fresno, CA completed work but in asking what they completed, I was informed that all past computer data was purged from their files so they cannot tell me what was completed. I then called gm to get information but after talking to three different people I was told they were not allowed to give me any information as to what was completed. I referenced a gm report entitled "04006c - product safety recall - February 8, 2006" in talking with the gm representatives and I was told the report didn't exist. The report was found at https://static. Nhtsa. Gov. This report replaced bulletin 04006b - November 23, 2004. In reading on NHTSA, several other owners experienced the same vehicle issues with steering column. Plus, with work being completed but still having same issues. Can you assist me in obtaining the recall work completion report on my vehicle? hedrick's indicated that I would have to bring the vehicle in for a diagnostic review at the cost of $165. 00 and then go from there. In reading "04006c - product safety recall - February 8, 2006" it indicates, "dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this recall at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward. " plus, whatever work hedrick's completed the work wasn't sufficient as the issue of the steering column locking up continues.

6 Steering Column problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 05/08/2020

I have owned this 2001 Corvette since it was new it has less than 7000 miles on it. On Friday may 8th 2020 I had to have it towed to the dealer century Chevrolet in broomfield colorado. The service column lock is on at the dash and I cannot turn the steering wheel and if you try to drive it the vehicle will stall. I had recall 04006 preformed on the car on 10/25/2004 with 1912 miles on it and this was a reprograming of the pcm. I have since learned there has been 2-3 updates for this condition and there is a recall 04006c and special policy #05081 for a new wiring harness to be installed to correct this condition. I was never contacted by gm about this and feel I should not have to pay for a defect they know about! the vehicle was towed out of my garage /driveway we had to push it out of the garage onto a tow truck and it is currently at the dealership waiting to here what they are going to do. I don't think they are going to offer any help nor did they want to pickup the tow charges and add it to the bill. Regardless I have to fix the vehicle as it does me no good the way it is. With this said the original fix of the recall did not fix the vehicle and the now known fix should be done at no charge to the consumer/customer. This vehicle is in mint condition and has not been modified in any way and taken care of like new since owned. I am reaching out to you because the right thing needs to happen and gm should accept responsibility for there actions and knowingly that there is a defect. I am lucky I was not driving this vehicle as I was planning on driving the morning this happened as I could of killed myself or someone else.

7 Steering Column problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 11/05/2019

While driving in heavy traffic, the steering wheel popped out and dropped into my lap. Seems as if entire steering column fell, as well as spring loaded action of actual steering wheel. I was able to lift up and apply pressure forward onto steering wheel to regain control of steering, but had to hold wheel in place.

The steering column of my car locked and I had to tow the car to the nearest dealership. I know there was a recall for this problem in 2004. The recall was never fixed on my car. The dealership claims that there a 0 open recalls on my car and wants to charge me $1500 for the repair. I am the first and only owner of the car and am very sure that the recall was not fixed because I've never taken the car to any dealership for any reason. I asked for records of the repair and was told that they don't have records. Please help!!!!!.

10 Steering Column problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 07/30/2019

My 2000 Chevrolet Corvette has approximately 57,500 original miles on it. Recall # 04006 was completed on my vehicle by dealer code 20385 back in 2004. I did see they released recall #'s 04006b and 04006c as well. I started my car on 7/30/2019 and I was sitting in the garage when I saw the "steering column lock" message on the dasboard. The car was started and now the steering wheel is locked and can not be turned. I reached out to two local san diego Chevrolet dealerships; bob stall Chevrolet and jimmie johnson Chevrolet, corporate gm, corporate Chevrolet and the ntsb. They all told me the recall was completed and there is nothing they can do, they said I will have to repair the issue. This is unsatisfactory! I could have taken the car out for a drive and had the steering wheel lock up as im driving. Doing research online and reading the recall bulliten is it possible the repair was not done properly? I dont know, I did not own the car when the recall was performed. I was given a case # of 9-5398357823 when I called 1-800=630-2438. Please see the attached pictures.

11 Steering Column problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 12/05/2018

My question is; I own a 2005 Corvette c6 and have been having problems with my steering column which is the tilt and telescoping. Such as not being able to start it. I am lucky that my brakes haven't locked up on me yet. During my research I found that you had began a safety recall on April 30, 2010, NHTSA 10v172000, regarding the tilt and telescoping steering wheel on my year and model of vehicle. I contacted my Chevrolet dealership yesterday about this and scheduling to have them put in the bypass to column lock. I mentioned the safety recall and he told me that there was only one recall on my vehicle, lights. Why isn't my car approved for the safety recall of 2010, when she meets all of the criteria?.

Then in 2006 it was announced that even those initial recall repairs were failing and it was suggested to have the locking pin removed altogether which never was done to my car. My car currently has a locked pin and the dealer says they will not do the repair or remove the pin for free unless I file a complaint with the nhta.

16 Steering Column problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 06/28/2018

Backing up from a private parking place I almost crashed due to the steering column locked on me. I tried to free it but it wouldn't release. The car computer indicated I should remove key for 10 seconds and reinsert to free the locked steering wheel, no success. Had car towed to the chevy dealer for a fix. Dealer said their was a recall on this defect back in 2004. Dealer records indicate that I took the vehicle in for a recall but I don't remember what the recall was for. Nonetheless, I have no records explaining what was specifically done at that time on the recall. The dealer also has no specific records on that recall. I am the original owner. The dealer here in pahrump nv fixed the problem and said that the problem was a computer defect causing the anti theft plate to lock the steering plate. They remove the steering plate and install a harness kit and lock plate eliminator and charged me $199. 60 . I understand that recall don't expired, whether they haven't been performed or improperly repaired. I object to being charged for a defect that GMC interduce. This defect is dangerious. Clearly GMC did not think out the comparative risk of a computer failure causing the locking plate to disengage causing the car to be stolen; or causing the plate to lock while driving the car into a deadly event.

After researching online I found this is a known issue for 2005 manual transmission Corvettes and lots of people are having the same problem. Called gm to see if my VIN would be covered since this is a known issue with a faulty part, and was told it was not. Gm should do the right thing for their customers and recall this known problem to fix or reimburse those who have already paid for this very inconvenient and dangerous issue.

28 Steering Column problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 05/13/2017

My wife was driving down a busy road and stopped at a traffic signal. After moving about 10' the car stalled and the malfunction indicator flashed "pull key and wait 10 seconds" then "service steering column lock". This happened several times blocking traffic and causing a safety hazard. She was able to get the vehicle home and it worked for a few days and the same thing happened to me while driving in traffic, the car stalled repeatedly from a dead stop upon moving about 10' and then after several restarts I was able to get the vehicle home and had it towed to a Chevrolet dealer. The dealer confirmed that gm had performed recalls 04006b and no. 04006c on this vehicle several years ago to address the column lock issue and that recall included reprogramming the pcm to shut off the fuel at 2mph - this vehicle will run indefinitely so long as it isn't put in gear and driven over 2mph. The Chevrolet dealer indicated that this safety issue isn't their concern and that gm expects it's customers to cover the cost - I phoned gm's recall department and told them the safety issue is recurring and they confirmed that they expect their customers to cover the cost of this safety defect. I also told gm that I intended to file a complaint with the NHTSA and bbb if they didn't properly address this safety issue and they encouraged me to file those complaints. Buyer beware.

29 Steering Column problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 05/05/2017

In 2002 my Corvette was taken to a well known dealership for repair of the locked steering column (per a recall notice). The steering column has locked again. I only drive the car on occasion. When taken to the dealership in 20002, I had 14,901 miles at present, I have 17,000+ miles. Is it possible to have the locked steering column repaired again free of cost. I have a copy of the paper-work for the repair. It is a bit faded after all these years. You can, however, make out information on the recall with a corresponding recall no. Of 01044. The vehicle was stationary at the time of discovering that the steering column was locke once again.

34 Steering Column problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 08/24/2016

The vehicle's electronic column locking system was having intermittent severe failure. When trying to steer the car after ignition and moving down the road the wheel would lock in certain positions and to prevent a crash I would have to stop the car and hope the locking system released. I found that this issue was covered by #04006c product safety recall. When I contacted the service department at nucar Chevrolet; they indicated that the recall was not still open. Thus I was forced to have my mechanic repair this before a serious crash occurred. I also called the Chevrolet product recall line and was told that my vehicle was not one of the affected VIN's. That is not the case if you review document id#1761087 or the attached documentation I have found. On 8/24/16 I paid $215. 46 plus my time and talent to research and bring this forward. I believe gm needs to reimburse me for this issue. Please advise how best to proceed. Thank you.

35 Steering Column problem of the 1998 Chevrolet Corvette

Failure Date: 07/06/2016

I have owned my 1998 Corvette for two years. The pull key and wait 10 seconds and the service steering column lock errors are crippling me enjoyment of the car. I have installed an lmc5 module last year and the problems will not go away. The recall on the service column lock was performed on the car which removed the actual locking mechanism on the steering column. But the car will not move over two miles per hour with the error message and I have found no fixed that help me. What is gm doing about the horrible horrible problem on their most distinguished car model. . . . ? all instances happen when first stariting the car no matter how long it has sat. Battery is perfect. I very rarely dive the car, but when I do I have this horrible problem and it is getting worse.
