Suspension Problems of Chevrolet Equinox - part 1

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that the a/c had failed to work as intended. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where a cold diagnosis was made. The independent mechanic informed the contact that the frame on the front passenger side near the radiator had been put together with bondo and was not welded. The bottom part of the radiator was fractured and not intact and the a/c lines were damaged, and the front bumper was damaged. The mechanic refused to repair the vehicle due to the liability and informed the contact to stop driving the vehicle.  the contact took the vehicle back to the private dealer where she purchased the vehicle and the company agreed to do the repairs; the repairs are pending. The contact stated that when she purchased the vehicle she was shown a carfax report where it stated that the vehicle had been in an accident prior to the purchase. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 17,100.  .

Engine reduced power, over acceleration as well as sluggish acceleration, wobbling on the freeway, electrical dashboard problems, tire sensor light comes on after getting it repaired. This vehicle has the same problems like 2021 -2024, reduced speed and couldn't go over 40 mph on a busy street with speed limited being 50 mph.

The abs light came on the dash and traction control. I was driving in a rain storm and went around a corner and front end started to slide. Was only going 35 mph so I didn't lose control. This happened on. 04/15/2025 . If I would have been going any faster I would have lost control. This is very dangerous as I realized. It should be fixed by gm for safety concerns.

The underbody of my 2012 Equinox is completely rusted and now not drivable. The kframe is rotten and the car is not safe to drive. The engine consumes a great amount of oil. I've been told the engine needs to be replaced. I've only had the car for 2 years.

Originally system warning message to service brake system. Had system checked by mechanic. Nothing found. After a few weeks as I was merging on a highway I felt my engine start to stall. I immediately tried to make my way to the side of highway. Brakes were very hard to press and car stalled with engine light immuninating, and no power steering. Code p0017. Engine will crank and sputter but will not start also has blowby present. Cam and crankshaft sensors/actuator solenoids were replaced, then the vacuum pump cover was opened and found broken parts inside. Upon removal of pump it was found broken. Suspect broken parts are blocking crankshaft or either of the cams to not be able to rotate properly. This issue possibly has cause timing chain issues as well. Parts in the vacuum caused it to seize. Exhaust cam continued to spin shattering the end connected on the pump. I have done research and found that others have had the same thing occur with the warning for brake system and then weeks later the brakes do not work, which is due to the pump providing pressure for the brake boost system.

Vehicle shakes when turning on and while driving, check engine light is on or blinking, service stabilitrack warning, traction control light is on, poor acceleration, tire monitor system light is on and does not read tire pressure (this is all happening at the same time).

The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the check engine warning light remained illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who discovered that the oil level was low even though the oil had recently been changed. The contact was informed of a possible oil consumption failure. The vehicle was not repaired. Additionally, while driving at various speeds, there was an abnormal squeaking sound coming from the front the vehicle. The local dealer determined that the front suspension sway bars were faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was not yet notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 144,000.

This vehicle is using insurmountable amount of engine oil. Since I purchased the vehicle in 2024 I've had the oil changed once and twice the engine oil was down 3-4 quarts and when I started it,the engine was rattling because of oil disappearing. I purchased this nice looking car for. $5000. ,so it's not junk to me it must be fixed. I think gm should be responsible for this problem.

Purchased this car in June 2024. Didnt notice it was leaking oil until having oil changed. The mechanic said the engine was dry with not much oil. The mechanic told me the oil pan seal is bad. I checked and it doesn't take a gasket,and the oil pan must be removed and a sealant must be applied rather than a gasket form. This 2012 chevy Equinox LS ,and does not have a gasket form only the sealant. If the engine doesn't have oil the motor could lock up in traffic and cause accident. Suspension is noisey like bushings are bad and need lubrication but no where to lubricate.

The car shakes between 30-40 mph, with or without acceleration. I’ve done a lot of research on this issue many people are having the same issue and can’t find a solution.

The transmission doesn't shift properly and the wheel bearing and the tie rods keep going bad.

The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed and determined that the thermostat, and head gasket needed to be replaced. Also, there were other mechanical issues involving the front and rear brake pads, rotors and calipers, the drive belt and the lower control arms. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer had not been informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 107,000.

The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. The contact stated that while his wife was driving approximately 50 mph and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the vehicle coasted off to the side of the road. The contact had the vehicle towed to an independent dealer where the vehicle was purchased. The vehicle was diagnosed, and it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Additionally, the contact stated that later while driving approximately 55 mph, and going left around a bend, there was an abnormal sound like metal snapping coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact stated that the driver's side rear tire had stopped rolling. The contact stated that an unknown warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to the same dealer where it was purchased. The vehicle was diagnosed and determined that the rear subframe and suspension had collapsed due to extreme rust. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired; however, another failure occurred. The contact stated that after refueling the vehicle failed to start. The contact had the vehicle towed back to the same independent dealer. The dealer was unable repair the vehicle and informed the contact that the vehicle was to be auctioned off. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 158,000.

Rear control arm mounts have rusted out and are unrepairable. This should not happen to a 10 year old vehicle and seems to be a common issue with this chassis style and numerous models.

2015 chevy Equinox dtc error code p0411. Sai ports should be cleaned or replaced. Front sway bars malfunctioned and needs replaced. Please see if this is covered under warranty vehicle is only 8 years old only had it for 3 years.

My 2012 chevy Equinox lt had had nothing but issues with the timing chain the oil consumption where it hardly wants to start I have only had this used vehicle for 6 months or less I shouldn’t be having all these problems with it! the tailpipe isn’t smoking out white clouds but when you put your hand over it it leaves black oil gas smelling grunge on your hand! this is the second Equinox I have owed in less than 1 year and it should not be costing me a fortune in repairs within a year even though it’s used makes no sense to me why chevy allows this to happen!!!.

I took the chevy Equinox to the chevy dealership to have the oil changed. The house technician said it was unsafe to put it on a lift. The entire frame was corroded. On 02/28/2023, I had the dealership do a multi-point vehicle inspection. This is their findings: #1-1010: inspections inspect/check inspect due to customer request inspected unit due to customers request found excessive rear under body rust and left rear upper control arm is held on by two bolts, but structure is unstable due to corrosion. The rear drive shaft has been removed for unknown reasons. This assessment is visual and at this time. Unit looks unsafe and unstable to drive due to rear under vehicle rust. L would recommend to park the unit and get alternative transportation and replacing the vehicle due to rust. Customer has been advised of our findings. I called gm and reported the problem. They couldn't do a buyback on the Equinox. I filed a complaint with bbb auto-line, they closed the case said the vehicle was to old. Gm said the Equinox came from up north, and since I live in arkansas the climate change made the vehicles frame rust rapidly due to the moisture. The emergency brake cable, and control arm is rusted into. The vehicle went from excellent condition to unsafe to drive in one day. Their was no visibility of rust in december2022.

Car feels like it is going to take off at a red light. Then it rumbles and cuts off at the light. I purchased car from us auto sales. Dowc paid pepboys for multiple repairs for breaks rotors and the light that keeps coming on is service stabile track they got the light to cut off but the issue still persisted. They even changed all things dealing with the gas line. This car is still idling high at stop signs like it will take off on its own. And still cuts off at a red light. This is very unsafe and many drivers have almost run onto the back of me. I told us auto sales, dowc, and pepboys and they all put me back in the same vehicle after voicing my concerns about safety. Instead of putting me in a safer vehicle they ignored it. This has been happening since I purchased the vehicle in November 2022.

Both front frame mounts that hold the engine suspension crossmember rusted away. What is even worse gm discontinued the replacement parts. I had to use components from a similar platform. This is a safety related rusting problem that is life threating as vehicle can become unstable and uncontrollable at highway speeds.

Since I have had this vehicle and made car payment one, I thought this was the best vehicle for me. Then shortly there after came the recalls/problems (catalytic converter, electrical system inside the vehicle, and last but not least, the engine. I have to make sure I take the vehicle in 1000-1500 miles early than normal because of the oil is low and the vehicle. The vehicle starts to vibrate/shake in the steering wheel and making noise that I know that it is time for the oil change. This vehicle has been not at all what I thought it was. Purchased vehicle certified pre owned may 2019 with 56,000 miles. In June 2019 replaced front tire that were new due to passenger tire wear also new battery and oil change. . Jan 2020 had to have front main seal oil ring replaced. Oil changes done every 3 to 7 thousand miles. Have a 2 sets of tires put on . Have had some hesitation problems throughout while. Driving. But never did find cause. Took to chevy dealer on Nov 3rd for windshield wiper motor replacement. Picked up on Nov. 5th. Have had issues with starting since picked up had to carry jump start box in car. Car was parked until I could get a new battery approx 1 week. Put new battery in drove to work for about 2 days still. Had issues. Traction stability light had came on never went off. Parked car for another week or so drove 2 miles down road to store. While driving car was loosing power. Screen went out and engine reduced power light came on and died. Waited about 15 min jump. Started . Got about 10 feet car went into. Limp mode got it home . Would not start . . Got a list of codes. Replaced starter, camshaft and crankshaft sensor, new pcm, valve cover. Amd another battery. Car has not ran since. Motor is blown. Car has been down since Dec. 15th 2021. I have lost my job. Due to not being dependent on getting to work. Have looked into repair cost about 7 to 8 thousand that I cam not afford and still makin car payments. This is a manufacture defect and could have been alot worse if I was going any faster or been out in the dark stranded somewhere. Hard to believe a regular maintain vehicle would just die the way it did. Someone or something needs to be done . . Not fair to have to pay over $15000 and still making payments on a lawn ornament. When Chevrolet has none about this issue and refuses to fix. Knowing the engines will blow a rod do to the oil issue . .

The front sub frame where it bolts to the frame was completely rusted loose on the right side. The left side was barely holding on. This is what holds the motor up and control arms. My mechanics are telling me this is a common problem with chevy Equinoxes. If it's common why aren't there recalls. My car only has 80,000 miles on it and my mechanic told me to scrap it. I'm a fabricator and welder. I welded a new frame under it but others can't do that and mechanics say it's a no fix.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the dealer replaced the front driver's and passenger's side axle shafts under TSB 20-na-227. The failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 12,800. The VIN was invalid.

I own a 2012 chevy Equinox 2. 4 eco-tech all wheel drive I purchased it three years ago and a little over 90,000 miles on it asked the dealer if it was part of the class action oil consumption lawsuit. They said they knew nothing about it shortly after I purchased vehicle I noticed I was having to add to 4 quarts of oil every two months I saw oil puddles under my car and not sure where it was coming from. I have driven less than 10,000 miles in three years and have had my serpentine belt snap off due to excessive oil leakage , I have added myself to the class action lawsuit but I’ve heard nothing. I am still adding at least 3 quarts of oil a month and I don’t even drive 400 miles a month. I believe this is putting my life in jeopardy and passengers in my car. There is never been a check oil light come on yet. I have checked my oil and it has been almost completely bone dry. .

Experienced severe shaking in steering and suspension while accelerating, usually starting at the 2-3 shift. At 12,836 miles left and right front half shafts failed due to 'excessive lateral runout' . Bulletin 20-na-227 applied(as per dealer) and both replaced. Now at 21,500 miles, the same issues are occurring again. When it happens, the vehicle becomes difficult to steer and I'm concerned should a total failure occur while I'm driving. Initial problem started around 4000 miles but only occurred very sporadically.

Brake won't releases after puting on brake pedal key falls out of ignition while drive ing steering seems like going to fall apart when turnings cat hardly put gas in it code 0445 large evap leak detector.

First time: March 21 - NJ turnpike. Car "stabilitrak icon" and service stabilitrak" msg & "tire pressure monitor" light, then "brake icon" and "abs icon" with "service power steering" msg, then "service all wheel drive system" msg - all while the icons are on - car lost all power. Car died in the middle of the NJ turnpike at almost exit 18e/w. Had vehicle towed, took first to firestone a day later, the found a code they said needed the chevy computers (p069e, u0073, d1231) - took to chevy a week later (bellavia chevy, rutherford, NJ), dealer said they found no codes - could be the battery. We cleaned the ports, changed the battery. Had new tires installed at firestone on 4/9. 4/9 picked up the car, this time driving from northern NJ to brooklyn and the exact same issue happened again, only this time, in the middle of the verrizano bridge in staten island. All the same lights / symptoms as above, lost all power. Managed to get off at the 92nd street exit and into a parking space - towed to parents house in brooklyn, made appt w/ chevy dealer for Monday 4/12 (bay ridge Chevrolet of brooklyn). Vehicle is now with them, awaiting diagnostic - this is clearly a safety issue and for the first dealer to not be able to diagnose / get a code and the issue happened again. I'm now over 500. 00 in diagnostics fees that did not fix anything. Both times were highway driving, weather conditions we good both days.

My transmission is not picking up accordingly. Rpm are high.

My 2020 Equinox has developed a shake/shimmy vibration when accelerating between 30 and 45 mph. When I first noticed the vibration it was slight and did not happen all the time but with more milage now at 5309 miles, it has become more noticeable enough, that my wife and I do not feel as if the car is safe to drive. Two days ago while accelerating up a hill the car shimmied and a fluttering sound was heard from under the console; it happened twice while going up the hill. Upon returning home I went to the dealership at riverview Chevrolet and had a technician ride with me. While riding, the tech. Said he felt the vibration but could not tell me what was causing the problem or how to alleviate the problem. Upon returning to the garage I talked to the service write up person and he said to, "call all him in 10 days!!!!!. ".

While traveling down the interstate around 75mph, the vehicle began to shake almost uncontrollably. While I was able to regain control and continue on after slowing down, it was a very frightening occurrence. It seems to be a prevalent problem with gm cars as an internet search revealed lots of complaints for this "chevy shake. ".
