I have also experienced problems with both the passenger and driverã‚s side cargo door hinges not operating properly and binding. This problem with the hinges has occurred despite our efforts to keep the hinges lubricated to try to prevent the doors from binding so badly that it made opening the doors almost impossible even for a strong, grown man. I had to have both of these problems addressed by either the handicapped vehicle conversion company or thornton Chevrolet on those occasions when these problems became so severe that they prevented my utilization of the vehicle. The most recent occurrence of problems with the hinges took place on September 6, 2011. I contacted the collision repair shop at thornton Chevrolet and had them attempt to correct the issue by replacing the hinge pin assembly on the problem door on the passenger side (where my wheelchair lift is installed and used to allow me to enter and exit the vehicle). However, the trained collision repair specialists at thornton Chevrolet realized that the problem was more serious than this and informed me that the entire lower hinge assembly on the rear passenger cargo door needed to be replaced because of a crack in the metal of the hinge assembly where it is welded to the vehicle. As you will realize, this could have been an extremely serious safety problem had I not been outside of the vehicle on the three separate instances when the latch mechanism failed to operate properly. Had I been inside the vehicle or not at my residence (such as being at my place of employment) when this occurred, I would have been trapped inside the vehicle.
During a family ouging we were unable to close the right rear passenger door. Experienced difficulty closing door. After several attempts, I noticed the door was not aligned with the body of the car which prohibited thedoor latch to connect and close. The door would not close shut completely and has since kno ked while driving and also creates a safet y hazard for children & adults because it it te primary exit for the rear exit to the sidewalk forcing passengers to exit from the rear left door passenger door onto the street to oncomming traffic that can lead to accident, bodily injury or fatality. No prior maintenance instructions or suggested upkeep was documented in the buyers manual which came with the vehicle that would indicate possible hinge corrosion or rusting. Possible pin defect detected by certified dealer on 10/7/2012, when taken in for datety recall on fule filler pipe recall 12166 campaygn id#12v388. Multiple complaint for hinge/pins have been documented in complaints on safercar. Org website for 2003 chevy Express van. I believe this issue should be investigated to avoid accidental deaths due to inoperable access to sidewalk from the left rear passenger door.
1999 Chevrolet Express spare tire fell off while driving. The spare tire was attached with a steel cable to the rear underside of the van. When the steel cable broke the tire bounced under the tow trailer bending it's axle. The consumer believes the cable may not have been strong enough.

This van has a slow down mode that varies. When reached at a steady 55mph the gas pedal was released and it took 1 mile to slow to 35mph. Also noticed that on the highway when going downhill the van felt like it was free wheeling with no engine hold back. If the cruise control was set the van would maintain the same set speed up and downhill with noticeable engine hold back downhill. It may operate in one mode for many days before it changes to the other. Two Chevrolet dealers said this was normal. At times if I remove my foot from the pedal at 30mph the van will maintain that speed for 2 blocks.
