Had a new key cut to replace a lost key. Shortly after I retrieved the vehicle, key I was using got stuck in the ignition. I got it out once but I was not able to do so the next time I drove the vehicle. Apparently, there is a known issue with the keys getting stuck in the ignitions of the Hhr's. Fortunately, my car was not running at the time the key got stuck in the ignition as I have discovered several other has in my research. Two employees I spoke with at bachman auto group (steve and tony) informed me they already knew about the key getting stuck in the ignition of the Hhr's. If this is a known issue, how. . . Can there not be a recall on this to have them repaired. I contacted gm corporate customer service and from the sound of things I am going to liable to pay for the repairs even though they knew these vehicles had a history of the ignition locking up when the key is still in the ignition. They knew of this issue. I feel there should be a recall to have the ignition replaced to correct this design flaw.

I returned from the grocery store and my key couldn't switch off the ignition or be withdrawn. The car was running while I did some research and tried out the plunger release that worked for others. I discovered that the plunger to release the lock is working properly, so it must be the ignition lock itself that is defective. I found the fuse block and located the fuel pump fuse and pulled it to stall the engine. The ignition is still on, but since it's 9pm, I'll have to wait until tomorrow before I can get it checked.
My car would not turn off. The key is stuck in the ignition in the on position and will not turn to the off position. Was told, without even getting past the above description " it's an Hhr isn't it" by person on the phone from Chevrolet dealership. We were told by the Chevrolet dealership to pull fuse in engine and drive it over tomorrow since the garage is closed it being Sunday. Called dealership back to notify would bring car over now due to issues with transportation for Monday. . . . Ended up having to have it towed because it was unsafe to drive since when turned on it keeps sputtering as though miss firing and sounds as if it is going to stall. . . .

After parking in the drive way around 11:30 pm the ignition key would not turn off. I tried to use the release plunger but ended up removing the lower steering column cover and forcing it over the key. Then I pulled the wire harness off which shut off the engine. I was able to start the car by putting the wire back on and twisting the key. The dealer said the key was bent and charged me $400 to replace the switch. They obviously used pliers to remove the key. While in their waiting room I read an article in a March issue of motor magazine that said this is a common problem for several cars including Hhr's and they are not sure why. I feel this should have been on recall and not be charged to us. The keys may be too soft or it was a manufacturers defect in the first place.

I live in deltona, FL and drove to palm bay, FL from home and got out of my car, returned to it a few minutes later and started it with the key fob and got in and the key would not turn in the ignition. Had to let the car turn itself off and tried several times to turn the key. The steering wheel was not locked, I walked to a nearby firestone dealer who kindly agreed to let a technician come over to my car and try to turn the key, he was unsuccesful as well after several attempts. He was able to pull the steering wheel into the locked position however was still unable to turn the key in the ignition. I had to call a tow truck to tow me to the nearest chevy dealership, in melbourne, FL. This dealership wouldn't even tell me if they had the part in stock to replace it so that I could drive home they told me to pay to be towed and let them look at it and see what the issue really was. I went online and saw that many other Hhr owners have experienced this issue and they had suggestions on how to correc it, due to the fact that the tumbler was frozen. I walked to a gas station to by wd-40 and sprayed it in the ignition hole and unlocked my sterring wheel adjustment to allow me to pull it up and down as quickly and as hard as I could to get the tumbler to free itself up, to no avail. 1. 5 hours after the issue began the tow truck driver showed up and asked me what was wrong and I told him he could try and he was able to get the key to turn. I drove back home the 1. 5 hours and my husband is ordering a replacement piece to install. Why should we pay to replace this piece when this has been happening to so many owners of this vehicle make and model?.
