1 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/30/2023

Fuel line leaking in two places, in the rear and in the front. Completely rusted out. My car only has 60,800 miles on it. Type of car is a 2008 chevy Hhr lt 2. 4. Gas is leaking on the ground and a strong smell of gas is emitted from the car. This is very dangerous because the car could catch fire. I did not think this would happen to my car with so few miles on the car. I did not know there was a problem and drove the car 130 miles away from home to my dad's funeral. Then I had to drive it back because th e tow would have been $700. The mechanic who inspected the car. Buddy lloyd's lakeview automotive at 4757 sang run road in mcenry, MD 21541, said it would cost about $2,000 to fix because of the extent of the corrosion and the chaep materials used. In addition, the fuel lines are located underneath other major parts and would have to be taken off to get to the fuel lines. The mechanic said at any moment if I hit a bump that the gas could empty the tank and possibly catch fire!.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/05/2021

Vehicle stationary. Noticed strong smell of fuel coming from exterior of the vehicle and a leak spot around the rear passenger side wheel. Moved the vehicle to insure the spot and smell was indeed coming from the Hhr. Smell definitely coming from the Hhr, not sure of the spot (was not setting in new location very long). Took the vehicle to the local car wash to clean (in case the smell was due to the possibility the fuel tank was overfilled during refueling). Drove the vehicle as normal for several weeks. Noticed the smell and spot again after parking for an extended period of time, the spot was much larger and smell was much stronger. Decided to move the vehicle further from the house (for safety reasons) until I could investigate further. Moved the vehicle to a remote driveway. It sat for several weeks, was going to move the vehicle back to the drive in front of the garage, so I could check work on it. The smell was very strong and the spot was very large. The vehicle would not start, it was out of fuel. When it was previously moved to the remote driveway, it had at least 1/4 tank of of fuel. This means that all of that fuel was in the driveway. I was glad I had moved it and that my granddaughter was never in the vehicle when I had been driving it weeks earlier. Had some friends help me get it moved back to where I could work on it. Found that the leak was somewhere above the passenger rear wheel under a foil like heat shield. Checked on-line, found there was a NHTSA investagation on this issue. Really - investagation! this leak is in close proximity of the exhaust system. The reason for the heat shield in the first place. Really glad my granddaughter had not been a passenger for sometime. Further investagation on-line, this is very common issue on several models, especially in the midwest due to salt use for snow removal.

3 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/01/2021

I notice that the tank has been leaking fuel. This occurs when I fill up the tank and/or the fuel swishes or moves around. This happens on the rear left tire. It seems to get on the exhaust or heat up and smell excessive fuel. I noticed this when I would park for at least 20 mins on a full tank. I am a fuel tank engineer and see this as a poor design possibly.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 05/11/2020

Drove to local city facility pulling small trailer full of grass clippings and tree branches. While unloading trailer, I started smelling a strong gasoline odor at the rear of the car, but could not find source. After arriving back home and unhooking trailer, gasoline odor was strong again, but still no source. After car sat for 30-45 minutes, a drip was noticed in front of the driver's side rear tire. Upon inspection, the gasoline drip was originating from the plastic shield which contains the gasoline feed line, fuel return line, and brake line. This shield is located between the frame and the muffler. When I called a towing service to tow my car to a local garage, the towing service acknowledged they had just fixed another Hhr for a gas leak at the same place on the car. They noted it was quite common for the steel gas line to corrode inside this shielding. The garage that actually did the work on my car noted the fuel line from the tank to the engine was repaired. ## #vpic# 1 - check digit (9th position) does not calculate properly; 3 - VIN corrected, error in one position (assuming check digit is correct); 14 - unable to provide information for all the characters in the VIN. #vpic#.

5 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 06/22/2019

I can try to send photos and documentation once I get them from the mechanic. Fuel lines rusted creating leaks. Have read several other customer complaints noting the design and materials to be the cause. My vehicle just has 81,000 miles on it. I am 69 years old and have never had this happen in any vehicle nthat I have owned including vehicles that have had over 140,000 miles on them. The danger this faultly design has created for car owners as well as others drivers in their proximity needs to be addressed and corrected now. I am disabed and have carried oxygen tanks in my car and will need to in the future increasing the danger by this defect. This is a sagetyhazard to every Hhr owner and nearby traffic. I do not understand why gm is not correcting this before there are tragedies when they have been made aware that the problem is their responsibility and they should be covering the costly repair of the dangerous flaw in their design.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/02/2019

Smelled fuel and found fuel leaking on drivers side rear. Took to mechanic and was shown that all fuel lines were rusted from the gas tank to the engine. Called Chevrolet and there are no recalls on this vehicle and made complaint that this is a dangeruos problem for not only fire but explosion. Found other complaints for this on carcomplaints. Com.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2008 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/26/2017

Fuel line rusted and leaking near rear driver side door/tire (next to gas tank). I have seen numerous other complaints online regarding the same issue in Hhrs. From my research, it appears that the routing of the line combined with the heat shielding lead to moisture trapping and corrosion more quickly than expected.

8 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/09/2017

April of 2017 the fuel lines of my Hhr rusted and I had them replaced. November of 2017 plastic fuel line connector that connects fuel line to fuel tank failed . While driving home through the city of lancaster I smelled gas . I pulled into a parking lot to inspect and I observed gas leaking from the tank. Gas leaked out while I was parked at a store. The fire department and hazmat had to be called to clean up spilled gas. I had the car towed to my mechanic . He reported to me that the plastic part (22719582) failed. He has been trying to find a part and he reports to me that the part is unavailable. He thinks many other Hhr's are experiencing the same problem. While researching the problem on line I discovered many other Hhr's had similar problems with the fuel line.

9 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 11/04/2017

Gas lines exiting the fuel tank run through a flexible heat shield as they run past the left rear wheel to the bottom of the car (prior to running up to the engine). The fuel lines in the flexible heat shield have significant run and have started to leak fuel. This fuel pools under the car when stationary and sprays onto the exhaust system while in transit. This was not a sudden event, the rust has occurred over time, however is not detectable during routine inspection due to the heat shield. This incident was noticed due to the gas fumes which collected in the car during a start-up. There was no other indication until the fumes were investigated.

10 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/25/2017

The fuel line from the fuel tank to the engine bends around by the wheel and apparently rubs with everyday driving. Eventually it rubbed a hole in the fuel line. I noticed it after I parked the car and could see fuel dripping in front of the rear wheel. The line from front to back of the car is a single piece and cost something like $700 for the line alone. (stupid) instead of replacing the line I had a rubber fuel line clampped to the line as a temperary fix. After talking to a chevy dealership and a mechanic at tire discounters, I was told by both places that this is a common problem. Both locations said that they get Hhr's with this problem often. This needs to be on a recall list. This service was done on January 25, 2017 and the cost for the fix was $232. Thank you for your time.

11 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/13/2017

Fuel line rusted and began leaking very badly. I thought it was the evap system in the beginning, but today the gas smell was very strong, to find in a walmart parking lot, a puddle of fuel back by the rear tire. This seems to be common problem, there should be a recall on them, and there probably weont be till someone dies; the leak is very close to the exhaust elbow, before the muffler. I have owned seven cars before this one, and not one of them ever developed bad fuel lines, and never leaked fuel. Not even a gas tank leak.

12 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 01/07/2016

Raw gas leading under the rear of the car in front of left rear wheel. Took it to a mechanic. He immediately took pictures and said although the car was older (just turned 10 with 93,000 miles), it was far too young for such severe rusting. The rust goes all the way back to the gas tank. He gave me the pictures and said to contact gm. Which I did. After a week of bantering back and forth with customer care, my case was sent to the executive office customer care following an email I sent to mary barra, ceo of gm. They offered a %15 discount on the $1000 estimate of repair. I refused that offer. The dealership will not let me drive the car off their lot because of the severe leak. I recently found that all the area dealerships carry a full supply of the expensive fuel lines for the Hhr. . I'm told that they when they carry so many, it means that there is a high demand for replacement. My certified mechanic told me that design location of the fuel lines is responsible for the collection of water and salt. The fuel lines are up against the exhaust system. This seems to be a dangerous fire hazard when the rusting leads to gas leaks. Please help! the car was parked at the time of the gas leak with a puddle of gas collection about the size of a frisbee.

13 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 08/21/2015

Car is less than 10 years old and both of the metal fuel lines that run from the engine to the fuel tank have rusted and is leaking fuel near the drivers side rear wheel. This is also near the exhaust and could potentially catch fire. Found that this problem was common with this car as the fuel lines were rusting at the bend points. Fortunately I discovered the leak while it was parked and the car was off. This is a safety hazard and needs to be addressed by gm. The fuel lines should never rust out like this. A recall of these cars to fix this problem is in order to resolve this issue as it appears to be happening to many Hhrs of this model year.

14 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 05/10/2015

We noticed a gasoline smell when you shut the engine down, but since we were having a very frigid winter we just though it was from the temperatures. As it got warmer weather the odor was getting worse. We seen gas dripping from around the gas tank. Our son took it today to see what was making it do this and found that the upper gas line is rusted and has several pin holes in that is making it leak. After doing a search on this I seen that this is a common problem with this vehicle. We have already had the ignition recall, power steering recall and 2 more that I can't remember what they were. Another problem we've had is the clear coat paint that gm wouldn't even listen about. The issue is that my husband and I are both in poor health and have to have the car to get to dr. Appointments but we live on fixed income. The gas leak is a very volatile problem that could start a fire while we are driving down the road. I feel that gm should do a recall and fix this problem before people start burning in their vehicles. A car that has less than 50,000 miles on it should not be having these kind of problems. This is the reason people are turning away from american made and that is sad.

16 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 05/10/2014

Gas line is very rusted and has a gas leak at the first retainer clip by the fuel tank. Leaks a lot of gas. This line should not rust the way it did, very rusty at every bend in fuel line.

17 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2009 Chevrolet HHR

Failure Date: 10/20/2010

We recently purchased a 09 chevy Hhr and within the first 150 miles we got a check engine light, took it to the dealer and was told the fuel was running lean. He reset the computer and told me to put fuel additive in the tank. I did so and the check engine light is still coming on and the engine is beginning to stall and lose power. . . . What are we to do, car still has a factory warranty, but can't get help. . .
