3 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 12/04/2015

The ignition keeps locking out the cars ability to start. On numerous occasions this vehicle would not start after entering the vehicle. The lights would come on and when the key is rotated to the start position nothing would happen. Upon waiting for 10 to 20 minutes this vehicle will then restart. When taken to the garage to have maintenance done this vehicle never failed for them on twenty times of starting in a row. Took the car home and it sat and now it failed again. My daughter is about to be dismissed from her current job because of this constant failure to start. Lately, the time has grown. My daughter took a video of the incident and have taken it back to the dealer and they are not able to duplicate the problem. They said they had to jump it to start it and when questioned about it they stated it took them 10 to 15 minutes to gather all the equipment to get it to start. The problem would have resolved itself in that time. This is now becoming life threating as the vehicle stalls in traffic and an accident could happen. No codes are showing for this according to the dealer. This has been going on for approximately 5 months now and getting worse. In my opinion it is something to do with the ignition or security system. I hope nothing serious happens while my daughter is driving. This is the only vehicle she has for transportation. I am submitting this on her behalf.

9 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Car will not start and battery will not take a charge. The battery is good, however. This seems to be an electrical problem probably involving the bcm. Chevy should own up to this and repair for free. Once the battery is partially charged, lights flash, speakers hum, and things click. Its definitely a problem with several models.

12 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2012

The ignition switch began having a "passlock" problem. Essentially, on a more regular frequency, the car would not start because it thought it was being stolen. A reset procedure took 15 minutes plus. Fixing the problem required that I replace the ignition switch. I argued that gm should fix this problem at their expense since it was prevalent on many gm models and model years (I also had to have this same issue fixed on a 2004 Saturn ion). In addition, I listed several situations where this could be a safety issue (car stopped on railroad tracks and could not get it started, could not start car in parking lot when faced with a burgulary, having to get help from strangers, etc. ) gm would not help with the issue and the total cost was born by me. The above shows that gm ignition switches have not only had the issue related to too many keys on a key chain / bumps that moved it out of the run position. Customers paid many millions of dollars to fix this passlock / ignition switch problem in order to be able to continue to safely operate their vehicles. I feel that this "passlock" related ignition switch issue should be looked into along with the current ignition switch recall.

13 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2011

When key is turned, dash lights come on but engine will not turn over. Radio will work, chimes will work, all interior and exterior lights work but engine will not crank. After some time, anywhere from 5 minutes to 1. 5 hours, engine will turn over and car will start and run fine.

14 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 09/06/2011

All at once the car would not start depending on how key was in ignition. Could wiggle then start, sometimes had to wait a period of time before you could wiggle it and it started. Unreliable. At the exact same time the front end electrical seemed to all go haywire. Headlights not working properly. High beams with no low. Wipers went into upright position when car started and won't go down. All routine maintainance and tuneups were on schedule.

15 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2011

Vehicle will not start at times. Security system thinks you're stealing the car. You have to wait ten or so minutes till the bypass security system resets itself leaving you stranded till you get a restart. Worn contacts on the ignition switch are not recognizing your key. Had ignition switch replaced about a year and a half ago and problem has returned. Seems to be extremely common on gm cars '99 to '05.

16 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2010

Headlights, taillights, interior lights were all flashing. The car also would have incidents where it wouldn't start and I'd have to wait for 10 minutes to restart. I was told by the mechanic at the dealership that these problems were well known in gm cars and were caused by the bcm and passlock system. I was told that installing a new bcm for $400 would fix the problem. Immediately, I noticed that the flashing lights had stopped. A month later, I was leaving a grocery store when I tried to start my car and it wouldn't start. I had to wait 10 minutes before it would restart. I called the dealership service center and they told me that when this happens, the passlock system is resetting itself and the only remedy is to replace the bcm again. I had a 1 year warranty on the replacement of the bcm, so I took it to the dealer the next day. The car wouldn't do it when they had it, so they weren't able to determine that the bcm was the problem. I was never able to get it replaced because it wouldn't happen while at the dealership. Now that it's been over a year, the non-start issue has been happening weekly. Gm will not assist with paying for another bcm because of the mileage of my vehicle.

17 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2009

Passlock system failure intermittently. Car will not start for 10/15 min. I've been stranded late at night and in some bad weather. Dealership said they don't know what it is unless the problem happens at the garage, otherwise they don't know what the problem is. I've spent in the thousands of dollars. Have had bcm replaced, cylinders and sensors replaced. Still doesn't work. Dealership said they don't know what the problem is. There are many complaints on this problem. (see carcomplaints. Com and look under electrical problems).

18 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 06/17/2009

This problem started several years ago. At random engine will not start. This seems to affect many different models of cars. I have a 2001 chevy Impala. I used to have to replace the battery bc it would happen every yr. Now I have to turn key to on and wait ten minutes to crank it. I am a single female and this problem is not only inconvenient but unsafe. Something needs to be done to correct it. I have spoken with my dealer and they acknowledge the problem but say nothing works for it and not to spend the money and there is nothing they can do. There has to be something because of numerous complaints here and on the internet.

21 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2009

2001 no-start situation similar to hundreds of others that are posted on the internet for the 2000-2003 chevy Impalas & malibus (there may be other model years with similar problems). The car will not crank when the key is turned to the start position. No noise when this happens but sometimes security light will come on. It is an intermittent problem that we've spent over $1000 trying to resolve. It occurs with no rhyme or reason and has put our daughter in dangerous situations. Car always starts eventually and it seems that it's just a matter of waiting a range of 10 minutes to 2 hours. Always a pain in the butt but sometimes a safety issue with bad weather and other factors. Local gm dealer not too concerned about our problem and gm corporation doesn't seem to care either. Maybe NHTSA can get gms attention to resolve this problem because it's obviously affects many people.

22 Car Will Not Start problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2007

2001 Chevrolet Impala. . Passlock security lockout problem. . . One week ago, I changed the oil in my wife's Impala, and disconnected the battery connections, to clean and lube them. Car would not start again, and one week later, it still has not started. I am currently unemployed, in a very depressed area of upstate new york, and we are trying to hang on to our home, though that looks in doubt. Did not need this to happen right now, and I am absolutely furious that gm will not do anything about this widespread problem, and that they have you pay for it, when it happens to you. This passlock problem is found on all makes of gm cars. I have researched the internet, and there are thousands of people out there with this problem, yet nothing is being done. I cannot pay the $500. 00 to $1000. 00 to get this junk going, and if you read the forums online, you will see that if you do, the problem will come back anyway! sorry, but the term legal scam comes to mind. So, my wife and I are out of a car. . . . Too bad we still had faith in America. . . When is something going to be done about this? big brother wins again. . . This is an outrage, a shame, a downright crime. . . Action to reimburse owners for their purchase price would be nice, because even if this car is fixed now, I no longer wish to have this lemon, which forced me to replace the brakes on all 4 wheels at 24k miles, due to bad design!!!.
