The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Impala. The contact stated that the key would not turn from the off position to an on position intermittently. The contact stated that after numerous attempts the vehicle was able to start. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, who diagnosed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 14v400000 (electrical system). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.
Multiple times the key has been unable to turn in the ignition. Usually after a few minutes the key will turn and I am able to start the car. However, on September 30, I was unable to turn the key in the ignition and the car has not started since. I can not turn the car on to put it in neutral. The key will not turn at all and I read that this is actually a common problem.
The security light started flashing on and off, causing my headlights to flash while driving and causing the lights in my dashboard to flash also. It ended up stranding me in a parking lot because the so-called security feature on this car shut the ignition off and would not allow me to start my car.

Ignition - key would not turn. Unable to move car. Warm, sunny day at a local store parking lot. Car had to be towed to dealership. Cause: frozen lock cylinder. Dealership had car for two (2) days to order part, reprogram and replaced. Safety was a issue. Cost to replace was $600.

Dealership said they had three (3) other cars with same problem during that one week! safety: this could have happened anywhere such as while pumping gas or stopping on the side of the road. Consequence: car had to be towed. I lost three (3) days use of my car.
While driving at new york freeway at normal speed and with no warning vehicle got shut off. Causing consumer to pull off the road. Dealer has been notified.
