Failure Date: 02/09/2009

My 2005 Impala that has 47,000 miles on is nolonger has working speedometer, gas gauge or temp gauge. This is a safety issue due to I nolonger have correct information on the speed that I'm driving with my children in the car. I can only use my educated guess on how much gas I have and will not know that my car is overheating. This could cause a fire and we wouldn't know until it was too late. I have spoken with gm reguarding the insturment cluster problem they told me that it has only been recalled on trucks . This issue thur a mechcanic will cost me $500. 00 + to have fixed however reading complaints online its very obvious that this issue needs to be recalled, just about all gm's seem to have this issue ( faulty stepper motor's ) find it hard to belive that gm will not recall this issue when the parts will only be $15. 00 to repair for the safety of there customers nor will they sell you the stepper motors to fix the issue yourself. I feel unsafe in my car that has low mileage that has been well taken care of. Please recommend a recall for the cluster so that gm will have to be responsible for its products and customers safety. I used to think that buy an american car would do good things for our country however now think that american companys could care less about its fellow american's there safety and standing behind the product they sold . . .

38 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/31/2009

The speedometer on the vehicle does not work, and it has almost cost me to get a ticket, since I don't know how fast I am going. They is a pending settlement, but that does not help me. The speedometer said that I was going 20mph, and when I was pulled over, I was told that I was going 67mph in a 45mph zone. This has been going on with the vehicle for the past 2 months, and don't have the money to take it to the dealer to get it fixed.

39 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2009

The speedometer just stopped working, the day before it was fine. I know alot of people who have Impalas and their speedometers don't work either. This is not safe driving not knowing how fast your going. I have kids and I travel alot so I think chevy should re-call this soon.

40 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2009

Speedometer said I was doing 87 mph when car was shut off and in park. Took car to dealer, had instrument cluster replaced. Also had them check pop in the steering( made noise when I bought it from dealer with less than 31,000 miles on it. Dealer replaced instrument panel cluster, steering shaft and cruise control sensor. ( cruise control would just shut off and work periodically. ) it was really just an adjustment on the brake sensor switch that needed adjustment. Had to take car back for the adjustment to brake pedal sensor.

Speedometer on my 2005 Chevrolet Impala randomly starts dropping speed or showing no speed at all. Has happened multiple times but also random, no constant way to make it occur.

44 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

Digital instrument cluster speedometer and fuel level gauge, speedometer goes past 120mph while driving and continues climbing until the engine is shut off, fuel gauge does the same goes past full when less than full. The problem is not constant but occurs mostly in damp or rainy weather. I have found that both can be reset simply by turning the ignition key on and off until which every instrument is acting up goes back to zero. It 's more of a nuisance than any thing.

49 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

2005 Impala 3. 4l 55k miles at 41k my speedometer, and temp gauges no longer work . . . It is due to bad stepper motors. And gm wants over 400 dollars to fix a problem they know is wayyyyyyyyyy too common and I as well as many people cant afford to fix their problem. This is very unsafe not knowing if your car is overheating could result in fire and death and speedometer not working could also lead to bad things!.

50 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/29/2008

I was driving along side the police when I looked down to make sure I was not speeding when I noticed the speedometer was on 90mph. I knew that had to be incorrect but I slowed down anyway just because I was unsure. When I stopped at the red light the speedometer was on 90mph still and I was sitting still.

51 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2008

Speedometer functions intermittently, shows false speed, doesn't zero or sticks.

52 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2008

I have intermittent problems with the speedometer malfunctioning. I cannot predict when the malfunction will occur. The speedometer will read 20 mph when I am driving with the flow of highway traffic. Sometimes turning off the engine and restarting it will solve the problem, but not always. I see many people complaining about this same problem with the same gm model but no recall has been issues. It is imperative that a driver know how fast he is driving.

53 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 06/07/2008

The car is 3 years old and the speedometer began to malfunction it would not accurately register speed after just turning car on while still in park speedometer read 80mph then after 1 week of doing so stopped working all together.

Speedometer gauge not showing proper speed shows doing 100 when parked, took car to dealer and was told nothing was wrong with it. Speedometer completely quit working and now the fuel gauge is not working. Speedometer quit working 2 years ago. Cruise control has went out several times and no longer works transmission started slipping around 80,000 miles. Traction control and abs light is constantly on and stating that it needs to be service when traction control was never engaged.

55 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/13/2008

Car fails to start about once a month for the past four months--always first thing in the morning. Radio plays and dashboard lights work, but engine fails to turn over. Often security warning displays in instrument panel. After turning the key many times for 10 minutes or so, the car starts up with no problem. Once, while pulling into the garage, the security light flashed and the car stalled. Chevy dealer could not reproduce the problem.

56 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Speedometer shows 80 to 90 mph even when you are going 30 or 40 mph. I was completely stopped and the speedometer showed 40 mph. The car dealer said that it will cost $300 + just for the part.

57 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Speedometer no working consistently. Shows I am going 120 when I am going about 40. Very sporadic.

58 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

Speedometer gauge does not work properly. When you drive it never displays the correct speed you are going and can read many different speeds as you drive. It can also remain at 0. This is happening on many Chevrolet models and can cause you to get multiple tickets for not going the correct speed limit. This should not be left to the consumer to repair for $700 as this a gm/Chevrolet problem. Look on several websites and put in a chevy model and you will see that this is an ongoing problem and should be recalled.

59 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/27/2008

Most recent incident was April 27, 2008. Speedometer repeatedly sticks on 2005 chevy Impala. Car has approx 80,000 miles. Inaccuracy in speedometer reading has so far not resulted in traffic tickets- only warnings. I have researched this malfunction on the internet and found that this is a very common malfunction in 2003-2005 gm cars. What will it take for a recall to happen - deaths???.

60 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2008

While driving the vehicle speedometer began reading faster than actual speed. Speedometer eventually stuck on 120 mph even, when vehicle stopped. Did correct itself after a week but only for a few weeks. Now doesn't register speed at all, just stuck at 120 mph.

61 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2008

Speedometer is not working. With all the complaints about instrument panels in gm vehicles, you would think it is time for a recall. I believe they recalled SUV's, so why not recall cars. From what I understand, my speedometer is just the beginning of my instrument problems on the Impala that I purchased. This could be a dangerous problem if a temp gauge is not working properly.

62 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2008

2005 Chevrolet Impala. Failing speedometer. This failure has been intermittent for over 1 year. The first time I experienced it I was driving on a 4 lane divided highway and due to the slow failure of the speedometer I was passing everyone thinking they were driving slow. When the speedometer dropped to zero I realized that there was something wrong with my car not the other drivers. The problem disappeared after I got home and shut the car off. It has since then intermittently reappeared. I have not taken corrective action on this problem because the car is out of warranty and I cannot afford the estimated repair cost. Research into a less expensive repair solution has show me that this is a common failure with gm vehicles using a particular stepper motor in their instrument cluster. One online source states this part number as x c5 168 . Seems to me that it will only be a matter of time before someone without the knowledge, money or resources to recognize this problem and correct it has a serious injury or causes a death due to excessive speed. Older drivers and younger drivers come to mind as the most susceptible.

63 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2008

Speedometer in 2005 chevy Impala sticks. You are going 35mph and the speedometer will read 85 to 90 mph. Called gm customer service. They told me I had to get a $80 diagnostics check on the car from a dealer, before they will tell me if they can give me a discount to fix the problem. The mechanic gave me a verbal estimate of $500 to replace the cluster. I can not afford to pay this. This is a serious problem. These clusters in chevy Impalas should be recalled.

64 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Chevrolet Impala. While driving 40 mph, the speedometer displayed inaccurate readings. When the vehicle is stopped, the speedometer displays 80 mph. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the instrument cluster was defective and needed to be replaced. The powertrain was unknown. The failure mileage was 51,000 and current mileage was 52,390.

65 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2008

Vehicles speedometer just quits working, it either reads really high or reads zero. You can never tell if your getting an accurate reading or not. Have not corrected the problem yet I feel Chevrolet should have a recall due to the high expense.

66 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2008

Speedometer quick working at 46,000 miles.

67 Instrument Panel problem

The current mileage was 87,749 the vehicle identification number was unavailable.

68 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2008

The speedometer will at random register that you are going faster than what you are. This creates problem on the road and cause someone to break because of fear.

69 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2008

2005 Chevrolet Impala speedometer indicates higher speeds than what I am actually traveling. Turn off the car and the speedometer will not reset to zero.

70 Instrument Panel problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2008

Speedometer began losing speed, I. E. Began dropping , with cruise control on. No loss of road speed noted, dis-engaged cruise control and continued with flow of traffic. Speedometer continued to fall eventually reaching 0 mph. Speedometer began working again after shutting vehicle off. Currently it will be very slow getting to 0 mph when vehicle is fully stopped. Very erratic operation overall. Contacted gm customer care, they said it sounds like a bad speedometer stepper motor. Informed that it is not under any recall. Currently not repaired due to high cost of replacement. Note: vehicle is a 2005 chevy Impala, out of warranty due to mileage (58,000).
