Driveshaft Problems of Chevrolet K1500

1 Driveshaft problem of the 2002 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 08/09/2014

Crested a small hill to see a red light with three cars in line. I depressed brake pedal, which went to the floor. The vehicle was stopped using the parking brake after swerving into empty lane of oncoming traffic in order to avoid hitting the line of cars from behind. Upon inspection, the front brake circuit was blown in the piping just aft of the front driver's side wheel. It is extremely difficult to stop a large truck with empty bed using only the rear brakes as they lock up easily. There seemed to be no brake power using the brake pedal, which is why the parking pedal was used. Even with a functional parking brake, the "failsafe" of having only one circuit is nearly useless given an empty truck bed (low rear-wheel traction) and a loss of pressure on the front circuit. In my opinion, losing the front brakes on a truck is catastrophic. In any event, in my case, the supposed fail-safe either did not work or was inconsequential. All of the hard lines (fuel and brake) on this vehicle are extremely corroded and are being replaced with stainless. This car spent the first five years of its life in oklahoma and missouri (where little to no salt is used) and moved to nh in 2006. The rear driver's side rocker panel is also rusted through and the frame has very significant rust, especially on the leaf spring hangers. In addition, the front driveshaft is rusted to the point that I will not operate the vehicle in 4wd until I replace it. This vehicle seems very susceptible to rust, especially the brake lines, some of which crumbled in my husbands hands while removing.

2 Driveshaft problem of the 1996 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 03/08/2007

While taking off from a stop sign intersection the driveshaft broke. When the driveshaft broke it snapped in the middle, not the u joints, it cracked the transmission housing and put a dent in the gasoline tank. We were in process of getting the transmission rebuilt, and gettin a driveshaft made out of steel.

3 Driveshaft problem of the 1998 Chevrolet K1500

Failure Date: 02/20/2002

I own a 1998 cevrolet k-1500 4wd silverado pickup truck. I've been having a problem with the slip yoke on the transmission and driveshaft not performing properly for the last two years. It makes a "squaking"sound and feels like it is taking out the slack in the driveshaft when you push on the gas pedal. It does the same when you are coming to a stop. I wrote to Chevrolet 2 years ago and they told me I should get a hold of my dealer to have the problem investigated. I did that at bergey's Chevrolet in hatfield, PA 19440 on 02/20/2002-02/21/2002 at a cost of $103. 67. They thought there was a replacement slip yoke for my truck, but when I showed up they said the new part was actually for a 1999 or newer truck so it wouldn't fit my truck. They said they could probably replace it with the same part exactly as I already had, but would experience the same problems down the road. They insted took my truck into the shop to give it a "fix" by disassembling the slip yoke, filing the splines on it, grease it with "magic grease" and then reassembled it. The problem reappeared two days later. I called them back. They said they'd call me when a new part was designed to fit my truck because until then they could do nothing to help me. I followed up with them over the next few months, but nothing ever came out of it. It's now two years later and the problem still exists. I hope you might be able to help me because noone else seems to be able to. Thank you for your time and help. Mike renner,\.

Vehicle makes a clunking noise when shifting transmission from 2nd to 3rd gear. Replaced transmission and locking differential. However, noise continued. A new steel driveshaft was installed to replace the composite one. However, noise continued. Was advised by dealer that this was a normal condition.

When taking off from complete stop the loud klunk from slip yoke dealer greased temporarily fixed (3 times) . Dealer /gm says it is a characteristic of the vehicle. Will not fix more than once. Gm has a formal complaint.
