12 problems related to brake abs warning light have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Malibu. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Abs light randomly coming on, and brakes completely failing at unspecific intervals. Today as I was driving I came upon a stop sign, while decelerating on an downhill incline my brakes decide that the would completely let off, and about 500 feet later down the road they catch and lock. Luckily I had ample space ahead of me and wasn't involved in an accident, but those intermittent failure can defiantly be a problem.
For over a year now, my 1999 Malibu has had its check engine light on intermittently. It will stay on for months at a time and go off occasionaly. It was diagnosed by a Chevrolet dealer to be the air pump which I had replaced for approximately $400. The light is still on. I have had it diagnosed again, but the mechanic cannot seem to find the problem. I am now told that there is going to be a new law passed which will prevent me from getting an inspection with my check engine light on. If the dealer can't figure it out, I do not understand why I should be penalized and have to spend additional money for them not to figure it out. I also have my abs light coming on constantly now for the past 6 months. The diagnosis showed it was the abs sensor which was replaced and the light is still on. I took it back and it was diagnosed again. I had to have both front wheel bearings replaced ($500) at 55,000 miles, which includes new sensors. The light is still on. I am now planning on taking it in for another diagnosis.
Intermittently abs warning light is on the dashboard. Dealer notified.
Abs light illuminated intermittently. Vehicle was taken to the dealer , who was unable to determine the problem. Now while driving and applying brakes consumer could hear noise from "left front" of vehicle and anti-brake system (abs) engaged itself. This caused the car to "coast" and almost collided with another vehicle. Vehicle is on its third set of pads and second set of rotors. .
Abs warning light intermittent at starting of engine.
I was driving down the road and the abs light came on and began to loose control of car. I called gordie boucher on my cell phone to determine what to do about the abs light. I was told to phone my Chevrolet dealer and make an appt. To have it fixed. I phoned trecek chev. In portage, WI and I was told that I could not get my car in until the next wed. But it wouldn't hurt to drive it. I continued to drive (approx. 10-15 miles per hour and the car started loosing control and went all over the road and almost went down an embankment. I stopped the car!!! a lady that was following me told me that my back wheels were not turning. At that time I phoned trecek chev. Again and told them I would be having it towed in to them. When the tow truck arrived the light was still on and the wheels were still locked up and dragging. Upon arrival at trecek chev. The tow driver tested the car as he unloaded it. The light was still on and the wheels were still not turning. I went in and filled paperwork out. The service manager went out to get the VIN number out of the car. Upon walking back in he was very disrespectful (I am assuming he seen that I had just purchased the car a couple of days before and not from them). He told me there was nothing wrong with my car and he had pulled it up to the entrance door and I could take it home. He said the light wasn't on and the wheel was turning. He also told me that when there is snow I should put the car in a heated garage to melt it from my wheels. Upon leaving I asked who was paying for the towing charges and he said he would take care of that. Today I find out my car is making a horrible noise and both front and back brakes/rotors, etc. Are very bad. It seems that there has been some kind of malfunction wearing on my brakes. When contacting the Chevrolet assistance I was told that trecek Chevrolet had put in a bill to them and said that they had replaced the parking brake lever. They never touched my car!!!!!.
While driving abs light came on the dashboard. Then, took vehicle to dealer where technician explained to consumer that problem was with the abs wiring harness that was rubbing the cb booth.
Coming off the expressway applied brakes to slow down and they felt spongy abs light came on. Also, there was brake fluid on the rim of the tires. Contacted dealer, and they have replaced the rotors and pads for the 4th time. Problem still exists.
When depressing brakes noticed vehicle shaking . Dealer stated rotors needed to be replaced. Front rotors and pads were warped and scored. Abs light illuminated.
Vehicle shakes when brakes are depressed and makes a grinding noise. Front and rear brakes have been replaced. Abs light continually comes on and mechanics say that brakes are in perfect shape, it's a manufactuer problem.
Consumer stated the brake and abs light woul come on imtermittenly. It was said to be a communication problem (since new). The brakes have been in the shop(dealer) many times. Now the brakes release and coast at slow speed, and almost caused two accidents where the vehicle would have rear ended another. There are also complaints with the tires (incomplete info). Scc.
Intermittently when applying brakes, there is a grinding sound like metal to metal. Brakes feel spongy, and the abs warning light comes on. This happens on dry pavement or wet pavement. The problem is more noticeable in stop and go traffic. Problem was reported to the dealership. The problem has not been corrected. Please provide any further information.
