Every 50 or so attempts at starting my 2000 Malibu the car won't start unless I leave the ignition set to "on" for 10 minutes. I have been unable to repair the problem so far.
Luckily I have not had any accidents with my 2000 chevy Malibu. One of the most common problems with this make and model of vehicle is that the ignition lock cylinder and ignition lock switch malfunctions. This causes the car to not want to start, and while driving, the car will stop in the middle of the road. I personally have been stranded in the middle of intersections because of this problem. This is very unsafe, and very expensive to fix. I took my car into the chevy dealer to have it looked at, and it cost me $553. 55 to fix this one problem, and now my lights do not want to work.
The key to my 2000 Malibu will not turn. It started "acting up"only when the car had been running for a while. It know has gotten to the point of everytime the car is turned on. The key is also able to be removed while the car is on. I am in the process to try to replace it, however I can not buy just the cylander I was told I need to replace the whole switch. I have two small children and need to have a car start, and can not "play" with the key for 5 to 10 minutes until it will turn. While I was talking to the dealership, he commented that there have been several people complaining about the key not turning.
