41 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2013

I parked the car in the driveway which is sloped downwards, and thought I put the car in park and turned the ignition off and took out the keys. After I got out of the car, it started rolling forward into the garage door. I quickly jumped into the seat and slammed on the brake. Thank g-d, no real damage was done, but I am pregnant and got really shocked. I realized the extent of this safety issue which I previously disregarded. The issue is that the keys can come out of the ignition while it is in the on position. Therefore if I forget to put the car in park and take the keys out they come out. Most cars have a safety feature which prevents removing the keys until the ignition is off, which cannot be done unless the car is in park. In my car however this is not the case as the keys come out in the on position and I am therefore lacking the feature to remind me to put the car in park. This can g-d forbid cause a terrible accident. I subsequently checked my brother in law's car which is also an 03 Malibu and it has the same problem.

42 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 08/07/2013

Turn signal switch does not work all the time will also make the turn signal sound when not usring it and if you let it go to long before getting a new one it starts to smoke I have replaced it two time and it is out again.

43 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2013

I turned my left turn signal on, and it wouldn't work. Since this the turn signals work when they want to. I took it to have it tested and they said it was the control board and I replaced that. But still the signals work when they want to. I was told about another Malibu that was a year older that done the same thing. But I have a young son and a baby on the way, I don't want to be rear-ended because I have no turn signals.

44 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2013

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu and the theft system light comes on all the time. Then I was coming out of work from working a long night shift and went to turn my car on but it would not turn on. I have read up on the theft system light and according to a lot of people this problem is quite frequent and nothing is being done about it. I am a single mother of 3 kids and I need my vehicle to work. I read that it will happen a lot and the gm people know of this and they don't do anything because they say there's not enough complaints. I want this problem fixed but I don't have the extra money to do it so it would be helpful if this problem was recalled so my car can be fixed from this annoying issue. I am afraid that if I get it to start I'm going to end up somewhere stranded with my kids. Please I hope something is done about this issue because I have read it happens to a lot of people who own chevy Malibus from the year 1997-2005. I hope this helps to get this problem resolved for me and everyone else who owns this vehicle.

45 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2013

Car stalled while driving. Everything quit, even power steering and power brakes. This has happened twice. Both times, I took the vehicle to the chevy dealership and they said the ignition was faulty. I've replaced the ignition both times. I'm afraid this will happen when we are driving it and we will get into an accident because the power steering and power brakes quit when all the electrical components quit.

When it rains the tail lights fill up with water and the lights do not work correctly. And sometimes they do not work at all. It holds water and the lights flash in a christmas tree light manner. Also when the breaks are stepped on the blinkers do not work. Also when you step on the break the blinker indicators on the instrument panel remain lit up green. I have replace bulbs as well as the whole light housing. Even drilled wholes in the bottom of the light housing units so the water can drained. Nothing can remedy this problem it is very dangerous.

The heating/cooling blower does not operate at low speed setting (1-3). Works only at high (4) speed setting. At times some smoke is observed coming out of air vents. 57 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

Nhtsa action number (pe05055) was initially issued in 2004 for a defective turn signal/hazard flashers that become inoperative on model year 1999-2000 Malibu, alero, grand am, and 1999 cutlass. This action number was later revised in 2005 to include model year 2001-2002 Malibu, alero, and grand am vehicles. The resulting document from gm for the initial model year range was: special policy adjustment - turn signals/hazard warning flashers #04098 - (Dec 16, 2004) gm document id# 1578551 and when the model year range was extended: special policy adjustment-turn signal/hazard warning flashers #04098a - (Jan 11, 2006) gm document id# 1750030 - I own (bought it new) a 2003 chevy Malibu that has experienced the same symptom of intermittent turn signal failure. Both left and right turn signals sometime work and sometime do not. You can never know when it will or will not work. This is a real safety risk. The switch type in the 2003 Malibu appears to be the same as in the previous years for which gm issued the special policies (noted above). On October 8th 2011, I replaced the turn signal/hazard warning flasher switch that was identified in the gm document. (replaced with dorman part 924-601). It has been almost 3 weeks since the replacement and I have not experienced the problem. I would have seen the problem occur during this 3 week period. In case it helps in your investigation, the number on the defective switch I removed from my 2003 Malibu is : 22594146 0843 f I wanted to report this failure as there is a possibly that there will be others with the model year 2003 Malibuã‚s that have experienced this problem and will also file a claim with NHTSA. If this is the case, gm will need to once again extend the range of vehicles affected by the defective switch/hazard flashers and include this extended range in their special policy adjustment.

58 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

The vehicle will not turn on every few times when trying to turn it on. The theft light begins to blink. I have to turn it to the "on" position for 10 minutes for it to restart, then it will work.

59 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 02/18/2011

Gm chevy Malibu passlock system. Originally I had a 1998 Malibu and thought that it was unrepairable so I sold it for scraps and bought a 2003 Malibu and about every month (2 times per month for the past 3 months) I go to work or store just fine and when I come out it doesn't start. I've been taken through several different scenarios by the mechanic at the chevy dealership where I purchased the 2003 Malibu from, only to be told that there were several issues with it and they have fixed it costing me about $500 every time it occurs. It wasn't until it happened last month while leaving work and a CO-worker called a mechanic friend of hers who informed me of the pass lock system failure and told me to wait 10 minutes then start it up. Since then it's happened 2 more times, once while my daughter was driving (luckily I was with her to know how to handle it). I've called the gm to no avail; they seem to know nothing of this issue and their mechanics don't acknowledge it being a problem either so because they've "replaced" or "fixed" several issues (not the issue plaguing the vehicle) which they probably made up; I'm out of thousands of dollars! this is an issue that has apparently been going on with this model for several years and they (gm) refuses to recall the issue or make any effort to fix the problem. . 60 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 11/29/2010

While driving the car on freeway it just stalled. I coasted to berm. It then restarted. I've had all kinds of electrical problems with this car, but this is a safety problem. I've read that this engine cutting out is probably associated with the passlock system. I've had problems with that system ever since I've had the car.

61 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2010

2003 chevy Malibu passlock passive security system failure. The passlock system engages on my car frequently. It costs over $245 to reset and $800 to fix. I did an internet search and thousands of other gm car owners with passlock systems are having the problem. My car will suddenly stop while driving and I've narrowly avoided serious accidents because of it. Other times it will simply not start.

03 Malibu with electrical problems. . . . The car shuts itself off while in motion. . .

64 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2010

I have a 2003 chevy Malibu with a passlock system. The "theft system" light comes on even while I'm driving! or the car simply won't start, even though it's in my own driveway and no one has messed with it. The only 'solution' is to wait 10 minutes (sometimes longer) until the car will start again. This is ridiculous! I've checked online and there's complaints about the passlock system everywhere. Why has this not been recalled yet? I'm a single mother and I can't afford -- literally or figuratively -- to pay for unnecessary car repairs. . . . Especially when the passlock is a *known* problem and chevy refuses to do anything about it. I also can't afford another car and now I'm worried every time I shut off the car, will it let me start it back up again? help!.

65 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

2003 Chevrolet Malibu signal and hazard lights have an intermittent failure. Relay switch may be bad.

66 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2009

Passlock system is not working properly. Occasionally the theft system light comes on and occasionally the fuel system gets shut off so that the vehicle doesn't start. I have seen many complaints on the internet about this problem with all gm models that have this passlock system.

67 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2008

I had a problem with my turn signals. They would work when they wanted to. I took my car to a chevy dealer to find out what it was and how much it was going to cost to fix the problem. The service attendant was very knowledgeable about this particular problem. I was told that they had recall up to 2002 Malibus for this same problem but of course mine is a2003 so I had to pay for it to be repaired. The cost was $110. 00 which wasn't bad but the 2002 and 2003 parts interchange. So why wouldn't they have same recall?.

68 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu and the theft deterrent system keeps activating for no reason. The vehicle use to have a problem starting and now has started dying on me in the middle of driving. This is very dangerous and nearly caused an accident. There are many people having this same problem but Chevrolet refuses to do a recall. It is going to cause someone to crash. It costs anywhere from $700. 00 - $1,300. 00 to do the repairs and most people can't afford it. Chevrolet is aware of the problem.

69 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2008

The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Malibu. The vehicle has been shutting off intermittently for the past eight months. The dealer keeps resetting the computer, but the failure persists. The weather was not a factor. The power steering and brakes fail without warning. The failure occurs while accelerating or cruising. The failure mileage was 132,000. Updated 2/5/09 updated 02/10/09.

70 Electrical System problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2008

Luckily I was not on the highway on my way to work when this occurred or a crash would have been unavoidable. Engine shuts off without any warning and then does not restart for 10 to 15 minutes. Dashboard lights do not come on during this time. You can tell when it will restart as the lights finally come back on. Gm dealership is aware of problem but is unable to fix - they keep replacing parts and the problem still exists. (carcomplaint. Com has several complaints of this exact nature listed online. ).
