The brake lights began turning on by themselves, and when I would step on the brake pedal they would shut off. The recall was performed in late 2014, but then the issue began again in may, 2016. The dealership ran the diagnostic tests and replaced the brake pedal position sensor, which I was charged for, but that didn't take care of the problem. Now they decided that they need to replace the brake control module, again, at my expense. There is an ongoing issue with the brake's electrical system, which is a quality control issue at gm. This is a safety issue for everyone involved. The brake lights will come on anytime, whether it's idling in my driveway or being driven down the road.
While making a left turn at less than 20mph, vehicle lost traction, causing car to skid and leave roadway, and subsequently hit a cement culvert. Earlier the same week, the rear brake lights were intermittently illuminating when the brakes were not being applied. Vehicle required towing and repairs. Passenger in vehicle suffered lower back injury. Two weeks after accident, owner received recall 13036 notification.
Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph, the rear brake lights illuminated intermittently without warning. The vehicle was serviced under NHTSA campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system , electronic stability control , exterior lighting , service brakes, hydraulic , vehicle speed control) but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. The contact mention the brake lights remained illuminated after the recall repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 118,000. Ak.
I was driving down the freeway between 70 & 75 mph. I heard brakes screeching behind me. I then realized that my cruz had also went off. I knew that my brake lights had come on for no reason again as they had in the past. I was sure cars were going to start rear ending each other because they thought I had slammed on my brakes. When this is occurring with my vehicle the brake lights are off when I'm stopped at a light or a stop sign and the brake lights come on when I take my foot off the brakes. The car will jerk like it is trying to stall. The rpm's will surge to 4000 while at the same time the car is slowing down. The cruz will not engage when the brake lights are on. These problems only occurs when the brake lights will not go off.
I had a lady follow me down a 55mph highway this morning, into my parking lot at work, to tell me that all of my brake lights were on as I was driving. Once I reached a speed of 15mph or faster, my brake lights would come on and go off when I would brake. She said she follwed me to make sure I knew of the issue and that she almost rear-ended me, but was mindful that there was an issue with my brakes so followed a bit further behind. I also have recently noticed that my service traction and service esc display warnings are on my dashboard, and my cruise control does not work. In researching this issue, there is an apparent recall on that affects my make/model year vehicle. I called teh dealership and was advised (after providing my VIN) that my car was not covered under the recall. I am wondering how it is determined what VIN's are covered and which are not. I am clearly with a safety issue on my car and someone was kind enough to be watching out for me this morning.
Having problems with 2009 chevy Malibu lt. Brake lights stay on constant, and turns off when brake pedal is pressed. What ever the problem has effected the traction control and cruise control. Been to dealer twice. First time they put in a new brake switch and said it was faulty and put some gel on some connectors "250$" week later having same problem. Took back to dealer. Know there replacing wiring and connectors saying its a wiring issue "645$". . .
I was coming to a stop and because my brake lights do not illuminate when brakes are applied, the person behind me nearly hit me. This was just the first of seven near collisions. I rarely drive my car now because of the overwhelming feeling of danger when I do drive it. Every time I get in to my car to go somewhere, I get in with the thought of I may never see my husband or children again. It is an awful stress. Gm has done nothing to help me except tell me they understand.
While driving on multiple occasions, the service traction, service esc, and esc off warning lights have illuminated on my dash. On two of these occasions, motorists have attracted my attention and notified me that my brake lights are reversed. Apparently, the brake lights stay on when the brakes are not applied, and the lights go off when the brakes are applied. I assume this only happens when the warning lights appear, which is at random times on the highway.
When driving, service esc and service traction show up on dash. When that appears the brake lights come on without applying brake and when brake is applied the brake lights don't come on. I spoke to Chevrolet and they said it was under recall but I had to take it into a dealer and have it checked to make sure that was the problem at a cost to me and anyway they can't fix it because they don't have the parts. So what are they waiting for? I am afraid to drive it and it is my young daughters car she drives to school. I don't want her to drive it but it is the only means of transportation for her. This is rediculous knowing that it is recalled an nothing to be done about it. Until when, when its to late or someone gets hurt.
2009 chevy Malibu's, service traction control and electronic stability control lights come on the dash when driving. Rear brake lights do not illuminate when the brake pedal is pushed and stay on when I am not pressing on the brake.
While night driving at 55 mph on a busy, wet highway, I noticed in my rearview mirror that the center brake light had illuminated on my car. I checked to see if the pedal was stuck by lifting it with my foot; it was not stuck. Then I quickly tapped the brakes - the brake light went off only to re-illuminate seconds later. I quickly exited the highway as motorists were beginning to beep at me. I continued to press and release the brake pedal on the off ramp, only to receive the same response from the brake light system. While driving, the brake light would stay on; upon slowing or stopping, the brake light would go off. I have looked at this issue online and see that this is a common complaint from owners of the 2009 Malibu. A recall has been in question since March of 2013; I stress that the NHTSA needs to address this issue, as the malfunction is severe enough to cause fatalities.
The traction control and service esc lights come on. The brake light come on while driving but will not come on when the brake is pushed. The cruise control stops working and it's loud when trying to accelerate.
The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the anti lock brake system and the electronic stability control warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the bcm wiring harness needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired under NHTSA campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic , vehicle speed control). The contact stated that after the repairs, it was discovered that the brake lights failed to illuminate when the brake pedal was depressed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.
The brake lights will come on randomly. This also causes the cruise control to kick off. The lights will stay on for varying lengths.
While driving at 70 mph with cruise control engaged, the third brake light in the rear window would randomly come on causing the cruise control to shut off. Soon after this happens I get warnings on the dash to service the ecs and traction control system. It has been getting gradually worse and with the brake light activating, could cause drivers behind me to think I am stopping when I am not. This problem was mentioned in an article in USA today a couple of weeks ago, that gm will be issuing a recall for.
Brake lights turn on when brake pedal is not pressed, and goes off when brakes are touched lightly; shortly after, the brake lights come back on when pedal is released. Several cars have come close to rear-ending me due to the brake light failure. Took to Chevrolet dealer, they said the wiring harness looked good, no service performed on it.
Brakes lights are staying on when car is in motion and brake lights go off when brakes are applied. Release brake and brake lights go on. Press brakes and brake lights off. The problem is persistant.
Brake lights malfunction. Thank god, I was driving behind my wife and her Malibu's brake lights were not on when she braked. And then turned on when she didnt have her foot on the brake pedal. Took to dealership, and he said hes been seeing that alot lately. Please recall before someone has major accident! thank you.
The cruise control was malfunctioning and after researching the problem I discovered that the brake lights could also be affected. When applying the brake the light in the rear window would actually go completely off. The repair is described in TSB 08-05-22-009c and was completed. The problem appears to be fixed. However it appears there was a previous recall for this type of problem with earlier general motors models and the problem is still recurring. Chevrolet has not send any kind of notice to owners about this potentially dangerous situation. The computer code c0131 is activated when this occurs.
While driving the brake lights will come on for no reason and the service traction control warning will activate. If you tap the brakes the lights will go off for a few seconds but then come back on. If you apply the brakes to stop the lights go out and people behind you are confused. We get honked at and hand gestures constantly. We replaced the brake light switch and it was recalibrated and the problem still exists. We checked the fuse and put dialetric grease on it as sugestted by the dealer and still the brake lights activate without thouching the pedal. Gm needs to fix this before someone is killed.
Brake lights come on intermittently while driving. There is no indicator when or how this is happening. It has affected the cruise control option as well as the traction control on the vehicle. This is a safety concern for all motorists - unsure when a care is actually stopping and or accelerating.
While driving the vehicle, the service light came on for esc/traction control and also my brake lights came on while my foot was on accelerator, I applied the brake and the brake light turned off, but when I accelerated again the brake light came back on after a few seconds. On different occasions while driving on the freeway the same thing happened and I was unable to engage the cruise control. When I turn off the car and restart it, the service light turns off but only momentarily. It eventually comes back on. Extremely irritating, inconvenient, and dangerous!.
2009 Malibu brake light stayed on while driving tthen when I hit my brakes the lights would go off no one knew when I was using my brakes heard this isnt the first time why do the have to wait till someone crashes or dies before they fix it also it kicked off the cruise control.
2009 Malibu brake lights stay on while driving then when I press my brakes the lights would go off no one knew when I was using my brakes. This was brought to my attention when I was on a major hwy/speed limit 70 mph when all of a sudden traffic was stopping. The cars behind me were coming at a high speed, but luckly the car directly behind me just short of crashing into my rear missed me. . He got out of his car while the traffice was stopped and approched me to let me know I had no break lights and he also noticed that prior to stopping my break lights were on. In the meantime I had warnings pop up on my car service traction/esc service. Well of course, my car was taken to a shop where it showed a break switch needed to be replaced and switch brake needed to be calibrated by the dealership. The car was taken to the dealership and the break switch failed when they performed brake position calibration. The gentlemen said that the switch could be bad even thou it was a new one that was purchased from the dealership. They replaced it again and re-calibrated and afterwards said everthing works well. Within two weeks the problem with breaks are still there. There is a major problem we have with the 2009 Malibu. I?m just lucky I?m still alive. What upsets me the most is the problem is there, but dealerships want to keep replaceing parts and charghing you $$$$ for something that needs to be recalled before someone gets killed!.
The brake lights illuminate when the brake pedal is up & sometimes won't illuminate when pedal is depressed.
Esc light stays on has been replaced 3 times. Causes traction control not to work properly also brake lights fail to work or will stay on and or stay off. Have reported to chevy dealer in traver city michigan they say nothing is wrong. . But something is wrong . . . Or not right I never know if my tail lights or brake lights are going to work and traction control. . .
Hello, my car's service traction and service esc light turns on intermittently. The brake lights behave in the opposite way, I. E. They stay on during normal driving, turn off when I press on the brake pedal, and turn back on when I release the brake. The cruise control does not work whenever this happens. I do not experience anything different while driving and I believe this is a sensor/circuitry issue. I read through the forums and news websites and found that this is a common problem in a lot of chevy vehicles. There is a TSB on this issue and recalls for a few cars. This is a serious issue as it might lead to accidents when someone driving behind my car sees that the brake light turns off when I press the brake pedal. I would like gm/Chevrolet lo help me out here and fix this issue without making me pay for it but they have not responded positively. The dealership charges $110 just for doing simple diagnostics. But this issue is something pretty common to a lot of Chevrolet cars and is not a wear related issue. Gm or Chevrolet should take responsibility to fix the issue. My car is out of 3-year warranty but is still within 5-year warranty (bumper-to-bumper). I hope that an action will be taken and my car will be repaired and/or I will be reimbursed for the repair expense. I found many articles on this issue and a few of them are copied below. . Brake lights may not come on when the pedal is pressed, while at other times the lights illuminate for no reason.
Brake lights remain on while driving. Go off when braking. Have been stopped several times by folks passing by to tell me that the brake lights were on.
The contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated that the brake lights remained illuminated whenever the vehicle was driven and stopped illuminating when the brakes were applied. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for a diagnosis. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 37,000.
Brake lights come on without pressing the pedal and when u press the pedal they go off for a second and come back on this has happened numerous times.
When driving my 2009 Malibu my brake lights will come on. When tapping the brake they go off, but when I need to use the brake no lights show. When this happens my service esc and service traction lights also come on. Im getting very aggravated, I have only owned this car since June 2012, and constantly having problems.
This is a recurring problem, beginning nearly 2 years ago. I have had the vehicle in for repairs several times, but the last documentable incident is March 9, 2013. Esc service light comes on, cruise control shuts down, brakes lights illuminating when they should not, and not illuminating when they should. There's always been some "thing" they find wrong, from re-calibration of the esc system to this last incident, where they told me it was the brake light switch! I had just had the vehicle in to have a headlight replaced the prior weekend and I never noticed the brake lights not working, and the dealer that replaced the headlight never mentioned it either. I'm thinking they would have if they could charge me to fix something additional on the car. I just paid $250 to replace what I was told was a burned out brake light switch on March 9th, (palmen motors, kenosha, WI), and its already recurring. I heard part of possible recall on wnn abc news and started researching and ended up at your site this morning. I want to report this. There's no telling how many dollars have been paid to mechanics to fix unnecessary repairs because of this! I am furious! I am hoping that if this is a recall, or made one, I can at least get some of my money back! thank you,.
The brake lights on my 2009 Chevrolet Malibu ltz come on for no reason even when I remote start my vehicle and the brake lights have never been engaged. When I am driving my brake lights will stay on and if I tap my brakes they will go off but 5 - 6 seconds later they will come back on and stay on. When I then need to stop and apply my brakes my brake lights will go off once I engage the pedal but will not come back on unless I slam on my brakes. It seems to be worse during the summer months or when it rains. Also, when I am in stop and go traffic and my brake lights are having this issue on my dashboard service lights begin to come on. My car with flash "service esc" then flash "service traction". I have taken the vehicle to my dealership on several occasions and have the paperwork they provide me stating they cannot duplicate the issue. I am concerned because I have an infant child and I travel a very congested interstate with him in the car every day. I have on many occasions heard tires/brakes screeching from the vehicles behind me because they have no warning I am stopping. I fear that I am going to be rear ended every day. I am not sure of the exact start date of the issue but I know this has been going on for at least 50,000 miles and my dealership keeps stating they cannot reproduce the issue. I fear for my families safety. Please help in any way.
Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Chevrolet Malibu. The contact stated while driving approximately 45 mph, the brake pedal was depressed the brake lights failed to illuminate but while the car was moving the brake light illuminated. The traction control and the esc warning lights also illuminated continuously. The failure recurred. The contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign id number: 14v252000 (electrical system , electronic stability control , exterior lighting , service brakes, hydraulic , vehicle speed control) however, the part needed was unavailable to perform the repair. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 66,000. Mf.
