4 Steering Column problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 07/16/2007

After complaining for 5 years to a dealer and car manufacturer about a clanking noise in the steering column, I brought the car to a private mechanic, who determined the car was dangerous, and the manufacturers knew there was a steering column defect in a lot of their cars, so they were quietly fixing the problem, but only when customers complained. I called the manufacturer and brought the car to a dealer again, and they said there was little or no defect. However, when I told them what my mechanic said they agreed there was a problem and the car was dangerous, steering could fail at any moment. Then, they agreed to fix the problem at a large cost to myself. According to my private mechanic and various on-line resources this was a wide scale problem , and the manufacturers were trying to avoid negative publicity. In the process, they were putting the public at risk. There was a technical service bulletin that informed the mechanics how to fix this problem. However, I have chatted with various car owners online, who had this fix, and they said the problem still existed. .

8 Steering Column problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 07/21/2005

2002 chev Monte Carlo ss experienced "popping" in steering wheel at 21,862 miles and again at 45,299 miles. Both times dealer invoice insinuated that steering shaft was replaced. At 84,000 miles this happened again. Took back to dealer who told me that in fact they followed the gm service bulletins at the time and only lubed the steering shaft. A service bulletin from 8/1/04 said to replace, but this was after the second incident and no one called to let me know (and of course I was under the impression that the replacement had already occurred. ) the steering wheel felt very loose and unstable and I feel if left unchecked could have resulted in failure and accident.

9 Steering Column problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 01/26/2005

I purchased the 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo new. After about 18 months the steering column had a rattling or clunking noise. I took it back to the dealer and he immediately knew what the problem was and replaced the "intermediate steering shaft" . That solved the problem. Now at 45,000 miles the same problem is occuring again and the vehicle is out of warrantee. Is this not a defect in the manufacturing of the vehicle? it is rarely driven except on trips. Other people apparently experience the same problems.

11 Steering Column problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 06/25/2004

Steering column vibration: at 16562 miles dealer found dry intermediate steering shaft and performed bulletin#01-02-32-001b(lubricated intermediate steering shaft). Now at 33678 miles the problem is back. The fact that there is a service bulletin on this problem tells me that general motors is aware of this problems and as a result of searching this web sight I have found that I'm not the only one who has complained about this problem. This problem also is evident in the 2001 Chevrolet impola which is almost mechanically identical to the 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. Because this problem concerns the steering of the vehicle general motors should recall these cars and fix the problem before it causes injury or death.

12 Steering Column problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo

Failure Date: 02/09/2004

I bought my 2000 chev Monte Carlo new in Jan 2000. At approx 20000 miles I took it into the dealer because of 'rattling & clunking" noise in steering column. The dealer determined that it was the 'intermediate shaft" - it was fixed/replaced by the dealer at that time. At 37k miles - the same problem. Again, the dealer replaced the intermediate shaft. Now, at 77k miles - the same problem again. This time the dealer and gm will not pay for or cover the repair. While everyone admits that this is unusual - they say "it is out of warranty". I believe that a failure of this part is a significant safety issue and should be investigated. According to a source at the dealer - the failure of this part is a common complaint, however, replacing this unit 3 times is not a common occurence. Your file odi id # 10037817 make reference to the same issue as mine. I greatly appreciate your looking at this. Thanks.
