23 problems related to front seat recliner have been reported for the 1998 Chevrolet S10. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Through normal use of the seat recline mechanism, both passenger and driver seat recline handles have broken off at an internal friction bar. Neither seat reclines now and is stuck in the last position used. Chevy, or gm, have done nothing about the problem, I have looked into fixing the problem my self, however the entire seat would have to be replaced and is to cost in-efficient for my needs. I have retained the faulty handles, dreaming that possibly gm will own up to defective, poor design and remedy this issue.
I own a 1998 Chevrolet s-10 slr pickup truck and the seats do not always catch. I went to a gm dealer and paid $300. 00 to have this problem fixed but some times the seats do not catch after you pull them forward to get into the area behind the seats, either passanger or driver. This is a speratic error but when the seats do not catch my passenger is slide forward or at times I the driver will find myself going forward because the seat track did not lock.
The front passenger seat broke and lodged into the dash during a wreck. None was in the seat at the time but if there had been that person would have very serious injuries.
Driver and passenger recliner lever easily brakes. After replacing it twice the second time it broke I was driving in a very uncomfortable passion and unsafe. I had to get a pair of vice grips to make adjustments to the back of the seat. I found out that this is a command problem with this vehicle for the Chevrolet parts attendant. Yet there is no improvement on the parts there selling or recall on the seats.
Windshield wipers intermittent not working causing a dangerous situation. Also front recliner lever on seat has broken twice, once on drivers side (replaced-out of warranty) now on passenger side.
On my s-10, as many others according to the parts dealers and seervice bulletin #220801, the seat recliner gear arm that the handle attaches to brakes frequently. This is the third one for my 1998 pickup. The material is very weak and costly. Gm knows of this, as can be verified by parts dealers showing I high sales volume of this part. The part # is 12479967. Cost is $69. 02.
Driver side seat seat recliner failed. First time the casting inside the handle failed. The second time the failure was in the transfer rod that the handle is connected to. First failure was while in use, second failure it "just fell off. " when it worked, an excessive amount of force was required to activate. Single owner operator - failure occured with little use.
While the vehicle was being driven the seat ajust mechanism broke causing the seat too collaspe backwards. Consumer also states that this is the second time that this problem has occurred. Dealer has been notified. Please give any further details.
While parked, both seat adjustment latches failed at the same time. Driver side seat collapsed back, causing driver to strike head on rear window. Property damage is cost to repair seats.
Seat back recliner lever has broken on the driver side front seat. When I fold my seat forward to gain access to the back seats and then return the driver seat to the original position, the seat back is too far forward. I can not recline the seat back to a safe driving position. I feel like I am leaning forward towards the windshield.
Passenger's seat handle adjuster broke. Dealer has replaced handle adjuster prior to this incident.
I have had another seat recliner handle fail. The handle on the driver's seat has broken off again at 34,000 miles. This is the third handle failure. The recliner mechanism, internal to the seat, must be replaced. The seat back cannot be adjusted with a broken mechanism and must be left in whatever position it was in. This is hazardous if a person is driving. Their is a pattern of failure in the factory design.
Seat recliner handle breaks off. Weak design. The seat can be left in an unusable position. Both the driver and passenger seat recliner handles have failed. The driver side failed at about 20,000 miles and the passenger side failed at 30,000 miles. I believe the drivers side handle is about to fail again as it is becoming loose.
Driver and passenger recline lever broke off, each quite easily and with little effort.
The drivers side seat recliner arm continues to snap off. It breaks off at the steel itself and not on the plastic. I have brought it back to the dealership 3 times to be repaired. I also contacted Chevrolet they feel this does not warrant a new seat. This can be a safety hazard if someone adjusts the seat and this piece breaks it makes it dangerous to drive the vehicle.
The levers that recline the seats broke off at the welds. It is an obvious manufacturing defect as a result of a poor welding process. The break was at the heat affected zone and the metal was not properly heat treated.
Seatback adjuster broke, causing the driver seat to move back unexpectedly and could cause a crash. It has been replaced 3 times. Dlr cannot determine the cause. Please provide further information.
Vehicle was rear ended. Upon impact, driver's seat back collasped throwing the driver under the dashboard. Manufacturer has not been notified.
Recliner seat handles broken 5 times, the handle was never forced it just fell off, the seat was stuck leaning towards the wheel.
The easy entry seat for extended cab on the passenger side does not latch correctly. When brakes are applied you have a better than 50/50 chance of the passenger in this seat being thrown forward into the dash. Tis first happen the first time a person sat in the seat (3rd day of ownership) the seat track was then replaced and now is being replaced a second time by the dealer becuase it has never worked correctly. This is a safety hazard and I see that it has been reported several times on this site. Has there been a design change and recall on this?.
My power steering system has always made a noise when I make left or right hand turns. I have reported it to the dealership on two occasions, but they never found anythin wrong with it, and now it is not under warranty. They said that they couldn't duplicate it but it happens every time it is driven, so I don't see how they could've missed it. Also, the recliner lever on the driver side seat broke off at the metal after the warranty had already expired so I guess I'm out of luck with that.
Handle that adjusted the seatback on the passenger side broke. Consequently, whole seat slides back and forth when going up and down hills.
The front reclining seat handle broke off. The seats did not sit upright or recline.
