The straps that hold the tail gate in position broke that hold the tailgate in a level position. One broke first and I called gm to see if there was a recall on my truck and was informed no they were thinking about extending it. My son was almost hurt when this happened.
1. No special events leading to failure 2. Both tailgate cables rusted, broke in half while lowering gate, minor bruising to driver and scratches on tailgate finish. 3. Cables apparently cannot be replaced, attachment to tailgate latch assembly seems to be permanent.
2001 chevy s-10 ext. Cab 4x4 p/u truck. Cable holding up tailgate rusted through, leading to an unsafe tailgate on my pick-up truck. Nothing was done to correct it.
Pickup truck tailgate support cable failure. 1/4 inch cable supports tailgate when lowered. Cable collects water under the vinyl coating and rusts through, resulting in tailgate to fall. Rust is not detectable under plastic coating. Cable rust through is at the center portion, the lowest part when the gate is up.
When my son went to open the rear tailgate of my 2001 s-10 crewcab, both tailgate cables broke at the same time. We were fortunate that he wasn't on the tailgate as he could have easily been injured and damage could have occurred to the tailgate. I didn't realize this might be a problem until after mine broke and I started to do a little research on the internet. It appears this is happening to a lot of s-10 pickup owners. I am currently in the process of getting parts to replace the cables.

The tailgate cables on my s-10 pickup truck snapped in two att he same causing the tailgate to pinch my hand. Upon inspection it appears that the sheathing was breached and the cables have corroded that are inside the sheathing.

I looked at the cable and it had rusted inside the plastic covering. It looks like the plastic cover holds water inside and causes the corrosion. I called a chevy dealer and was told they would not replace it, but I found a recall on other chevy trucks with the same problem.

The support cables on my 2001 chevy S10 broke unexpectedly while I was sitting on the tailgate. Both cables were corroded at the same point where they bend. As a result of the breakage, the tailgate hit the bumper and was dented in two places. These were the first dents ever for my truck.
The caller said the strap on the left side of truck that holds the tailgate broke. There was a recall on other trucks but not this one. . Dealer said this truck is not involved in the recall. Manufacturer said the samething.

Consumer has a problem with the tailgate cord fraying. Consumer had this problem repaired at own expense. Similar larger trucks have had this problem recalled. Consumer has smaller truck.

I have a 2001 chevy S10 pickup, was sitting on my tailgate whenone of the tailgate straps broke, throwing me off of the tailgate. I was suprised, but not injured. . Upon examination, I notice that the tailgate strap cable was rusting out on the inside of the coating that had been placed over the cablem. Many of the calble strands had rusted though. There is a recall on tailgat straps for full size pickups, but not the S10. I believe that the same problem of the tailgate straps rusting through and causing an injury if both fail at the same time exists in the S10 line of pickups also.
Both tailgate cable broke on my 2001 Chevrolete S10 crew cab pick up. I have since brought it to my dealer and had it repaired. These are the same type cables that gn has recalled on the large pick ups. I am wondering why they have not recalled the small trucks as well.
Both tailgate support cables on my 2001 S10 pickup that has a blazer VIN # have broken in half due to rust and corrosion. I went to my dealer and that said that the recall only applies to fullsize pu/u's and other tailgate vehicles. My vehicle is not listed. I am seeing that the blazer S10 has a recall on these items. Why wouldn't mine? can you help me get these repolaced?.
Owner was standing on the tailgate unloading his truck when the support cables snapped, causing the owner to fall to the ground. Owner later contacted the manufacturer, and was told that this vehicle was not being recalled for this defect, and there was nothing else they could do. The tailgate support brackets broke.
On Jan 29,2005 we were preparing to load groceries into the bed of the truck. We opened the tailgate and both of the support cables snapped causing the tailgate to fall onto the bumper. We haven't made arrangements for repair yet as I was checking to see if there has been any type of recall. I had known of the recall for the silverado and thought the s-10 may be included.

The tailgate straps on my Chevrolet s-10 gave way while I was kneeling on the back of the truck, my knees were hurt for several weeks. Gm knows that their tailgate straps are defective yet they do not warn that they may just give out like they do.
Tailgate strap, 1 broke about 2 months before the other one broke, nothing has been done to correct this, I figure they recalled all the full size truck to replace them ,they should replace these at no charge. Also, it is a good thin I was not standing on it when they broke . I could have gotten hurt by falling off when the tail gate fell to the bumper.
The galvanized steel tailgate support cables that retain the tailgate in the full open horizontal position corroded /weakened, and fractured. The tailgate suddenly dropped, and struck the top surface of the rear bumper.
