Unknown Or Other problem #1

Cable holding the spare tire under the truck bed broke and the tire fell onto the road.

Unknown Or Other problem #2

Driver's side cable that supports the tailgate rusted out and broke suddenly due to corrosion inside the coating. With the tailgate down, I was climbing back out of the truck, stepping back off the tailgate when it snapped suddenly. I am over 65 years old, and when it gave, I almost fell off. I do not understand why NHTSA has not required Chevrolet to make a recall and provide 1998 s-10 owners with repair of the obviously faulty cables.

Unknown Or Other problem #3

First incident of third door handle assembly failure. Plastic assembly handle shattered during opening and door could not be opened. Second incident of failure was in February 2012. Same inferior plastic handle assembly cracked and shattered upon attemping to open third door and had to be replaced.

Unknown Or Other problem #4

Clear coat on paint coming off.

Unknown Or Other problem #5

- the contact stated that while driving his 2000 S10 Chevrolet (failure mileage: 135000) at 60 mph across a bridge, the cable that holds the spare tire under the truck failed. The tire fell to the ground then bounced into on coming traffic. Presently, the cable has not been repaired. Updated.

Unknown Or Other problem #6

Spare tire retention failed causing spare tire to detach from the underside of the pick up while driving. Spare tire was not recovered. Chevrolet customer service was nice enough to say "sorry I'm afraid your bumper to bumper warranty has expired". Upon further review it appears the steel cable retaining the tire fatigued and broke. 35540 miles on the truck.

Unknown Or Other problem #7

: the contact stated while on a major highway, the hoist that holds up the spare tire failed causing the spare tire to fall off the hoist. The spare tire was release onto the highway. The contact stopped to retrieve the tire. Upon observation, the hoist was observed to be rusted out which caused the failure. The vehicle has not been taken to the dealer for repairs. Updated 9/5/2006 - no repairs have been made yet. The consumer would like for the manufacturer to pay for the repairs.

Unknown Or Other problem #8

Hit bump at below 15 mph while turning right at a very busy intersection during rush hour and spare tire fell off. Circumstances were fortunate in that it happened the way it did because I didn't have any high speed tailgaters.

Unknown Or Other problem #9

From a stationary position at a stop light I proceeded through a moderate dip into the middle of the busy intersection. While traveling through the intersection the spare tire completely fell off of underside of 2000 chevy s-10 truck. Upon inspection, I noticed that the cable snapped approximately 1/8 inch inside of the connector at the end of the cable. I retained as many of the parts as I could find including the end where the cable snapped (they were in the middle of a busy intersection), cable and winch are still attached to car, and spare tire remains in the bed of the truck. Car turning behind me luckily was not following closely and was able to negotiate around the tire rolling through the intersection.

Unknown Or Other problem #10

The steel cable that supported my spare tire under my truck's body broke (it was rusted out) while driving on a major highway. I was able to retrieve all parts (tire, cable toggle and tire retainer), and no other cars were damaged since they swerved to avoid the debris. The rusted toggle shows that only three strands of cable were unrusted when it broke, with more than 90% of the remaining cable rusted away. If someone wants to look at the toggle I will mail it, let me know. In my opinion, stainless steel should have been used, since this cable is exposed to all roadway spashing.

Unknown Or Other problem #11

Warning systems on vehicle are inoperative resulting in engine damage. ** answer required***.

Unknown Or Other problem #12

The consumer states that on his 2002 Chevrolet s-10 spare tire broke loose from the cable that it was attached underneath the vehicle. This happened while driving at 20-25 mph. The consumer heard the noise when the tire fell off. Then, the tire fell out in the middle of the street and almost caused another vehicle to crash into it. The cable snapped in half. The thin steel cable was not able to handle the weight. After the cable broke there was a little of the cable left. The consumer contacted Chevrolet and filed a complaint with the dealership.

Unknown Or Other problem #13

Passenger side tailgate cable snapped as a result of premature wear on the metal inner cable. No weight was on the cable at the time of breaking. No injuries resulted, but could be very dangerous in other circumstances.

Unknown Or Other problem #14

I noticed one of the tailgate cables on my 2002 cheverolet s-10 pickup (45,000 miles) appeared to be streached. Upon closer inspection I found the cable was separating under the coating. The opposite side was found to be in the same condition. I took the vehicle to my dealer and was told gm had not issued a service bulletin on the s-10, only the silverado. Since my vehicle was out of warranty the dealer rep. Told me if I wanted to replace the cables I would have to purchase them. Within a couple of weeks both cables broke when my 3 year old granddaughter attempted to climb up on the tailgate. The tailgate fell open to the bumper but there were no injuries. I have since purchased and replaced the broken cables. The old parts are available.

Unknown Or Other problem #15

Car will not pass emissions.

Unknown Or Other problem #16

While driving at approximately 5 mph, the bungy that holds the spare tire in place gave way, releasing the spare tire.

Unknown Or Other problem #17

While driving both cables that holds the spare tire under the vehicle completely broke and the tire completely disengaged from the vehicle. Consumer contacted the dealer. However, the dealer did nothing to assist the consumer.

Unknown Or Other problem #18

There was a problem with the cable that supports the spare tire from the base of the vehicle. Without warning this cable snapped, causing the spare tire to fall from under the base of the vehicle.

Unknown Or Other problem #19

I had a body shop tell me there was a defect in the paint from manufactor, the hood has alot of chips that is not from anything or mother nature. Its a defect from the manufactor. Also the inside door hinge pins are rusted on both doors due to workmanship from factory.

Unknown Or Other problem #20

Both tailgate straps broke while opening tailgate on my 2001 Chevrolet S10 xtreme. Both straps are completly rusted through. Truck has a tonou cover to protect bed and tailgate from weathering and elements. Dented tailgate due to failure.

Unknown Or Other problem #21

The dealer replaced the heater core at 15,478 miles, 18,611 miles and 32,000 miles at their expense. At 4300 miles the water pump gasket and rear pinion gasket leaked.

Unknown Or Other problem #22

As a laid off automotive supplier, I have a keen interest in where my automobiles are made. A year ago, I purchased a new Chevrolet s-10. Nowhere on the paper work did I see nafta information, country of origin information, or percentage of foreign content listed, as required by law. In reviewing your laws on cafe (recent information in the news and political campaigns), I noticed the country of origin information, and the fact that they are still current. Aala, I assume, still applies. My truck did not have that information listed. As a laid of automotive supplier, who collected this information, I know for a fact, that with all of the automotive cost cutting, the amount of us content is no longer high. At the auto show in January, I noticed all manufactures (foreign and domestic) except gm had this information promenantly posted on their sticker. Please provide information on law changes (and why if changed) or gm's listing of content and how they are going to comply.

Unknown Or Other problem #23

I'd like to complain about the spare tire on my 2001 Chevrolet s-10 extreme breaking the wire cable and falling off. After hitting a railroad track, it came off unexpectedly. Fortunately for us, it did not cause any damage to the truck or hit any cars in the area, after it broke free and traveled over 50 yards across a busy highway. Since the spare is approximately 50 lbs and 30 inches in diameter, it could have caused some very serious problems. This is definitely a design problem and should be investigated. It's possible the cable holding the spare should be replaced with something heavier.

Unknown Or Other problem #24

I am the owner of a 1996 Chevrolet S10, and read some of the complaints about spare tire separation from vehicle due to steel cable rubbing against the spare tire. I checked my truck and 3 strands of the cable had separated, and it looked like the cable was nearly at the half way point. I checked with the local dealer, and was told that I could purchase a new one for approximately $50. 00. This new hoist cable assembly is a new design, and should not have this problem. What makes me mad is that we are not being notified about this potential problem. When I checked my owners manual, it shows the new improved hoist assembly. No accident occurred, but it was just a matter of time before it would have occurred.

Unknown Or Other problem #25

Hinge on driver side door wearing causing door to swag and close properly.

Unknown Or Other problem #26

Water leaks into the passenger's floorboard. Truck has been taken in for repair 5 times and it still leaks water into the floor.

Unknown Or Other problem #27

The paint has a defect in it on the hood and the roof that looks like it is peeling down to a gray surface and I called the service center and he told me I am out of luck of getting my car painted. It is clear that it is a defect in the paint so why should I have to pay for it out of my pocket.

Unknown Or Other problem #28

Door panel molded plastic mounting clips have broken. 2 screws behind the door handle are the stress points for closing doors. The plastic clips used by these screws have broken off fron the door panel. Everytime I close the door, panel pulls away from door. Other than panels clips this is the only way it secures to the door. Panel clips are not designed to undergo the stress of closing the door. Having the clips out of plastic with no metal reinforcement they break causing the panel to come loose. Materials need a metal reinforcement to with stand the every day stress of closing doors. Both driver and passenger have identical flaws. Middle console has same mounting clips and has also broken in indentical fashion. Plastic is not acceptable for such areas of high stress.

Unknown Or Other problem #39

Dangerous horn design. Horn won't honk when you press the left side of the "horn ring" unless you exert enormous thumb pressure. It requires so much muscle pressure that in a sudden emergency, it would be almost impossible to blow the horn on the left side of the steering wheel -- even if you press hard where the horn symbol indicates you are supposed to press on the left. (the right side is much easier to blow -- no problem there. ) we took it to sullivan Chevrolet in roseville to request a manufacturer's warranty repair, but the service rep told us they have tried unsuccessfully to repair this design defect but have found that if they adjust the spring looser, then the horn tends to honk everytime you hit a bump. Unless the manufacturer makes a special repair kit available to correct this defect, the dealer indicated they cannot successfully repair it. A California highway patrol officer agreed that it creates a dangerous safety defect if you cannot easily blow the horn in a sudden emergency. Sullivan Chevrolet said the problem is the way Chevrolet designed the horn to fit over or around the driver's side airbag in the steering wheel. Some other manufacturers wisely put totally separate, independent electrical horn buttons on either side of the driver's side airbag to avoid interfering with the airbag, but Chevrolet overlays a large, one-foot wide, spring-loaded horn-blowing bar across the top of the airbag which pivots to the left and right, depending on where you press to blow the horn. It pivots ok to the right, but, as I said, it takes enormous thumb pressure to blow it on the left side. An elderly person would find it virtually impossible to blow the horn on the left -- which is the side most right-handed people would use, as they tend to use the right hand to steer. The horn will blow if you shift your hand to the very center of the steering shaft directly over the airbag -- but this loses precious time in a sudden emergency. It frightens me.
