Five problems related to fuel pump have been reported for the 1996 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The vehicle would stall without warning ant any speed. This happened with this vehicle twelve times in the last two weeks. The manufacturer and the dealer are aware of this problem.
Last year August,2000 fuel pump replaced by james Chevrolet at 103,000 miles. Problem came back when consumer noticed vehicle stalling and not starting. In may,2001 problem was intermittent and dealer said they could not fix it if it was not broke, and to bring it back when it failed. Three months later failed and the sender kit was replaced along with fuel pump and melted wires were found inside the tank. Dealers service manager had seen problem, but not enough to be conbustible.
Fuel pump had malfunctioned, and had to be replaced twice. However, problem has reoccurred.
While driving about 35 mph vehicle just died. Problem was due the fuel tank sending unit which shorted out. A mechanic stated that the truck could have exploded due to the burnt connector touching the fuel. Dealer was called about the problem. T ruck was repaired at owner's expense.
Wiring harness connected to fuel pump within the fuel tank burned up due to fuel pump failure. Incident could have led to a vehicle explosion. Asking NHTSA help in this matter.
