52 problems related to air brake antilock control unit/module have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
On my way home from a boy scout meeting, I heard what sounded like an electric motor or pump running continuously and the check abs light was on on my dash board of my 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd extended cab 4x4. The next morning I took it to a brake shop and they tested it on the computer and confirmed that the abs system had failed. If general motors put out a recall for this part, I was never notified and never received any recall notice. I have since found out that the abs systems failure is a common occurrence. So, why no recall?.
Abs motor continued to run and would not shut off. Had to disconnect the 60 amp fuse to prevent battery from running down. Am told that the abs module is defective and will cost well over $1000 of my money to repair - this has not been recalled. This from a chevy with 80,000 miles?? I've discovered that this is not an isolated incident, that this is a common defect with this vehicle. I was told by the dealership that this failure occurs so often that they keep 4 to 5 units in stock. Why isn't this being recalled? what else can we do?.
My father father-in-law is a certified mechanic and was doing some work on my 1999 Silverado and noticed that the abs motor was continually running. To stop this he had to pull the fuse. I recently drove my truck from minnesota to California and on numberous ocassions I had trouble stopping. I had to push the brakes all the way to the floor and the truck still was slow to react. Most of the time there was no one in front of me, but there were a couple times when I almost rear ended someone. I haven't done anything to correct the problem because I live in overseas. The truck is left in minnesota and I drive it whenever I am home for vacation. Once I move home next year I will have to do something to fix this problem if chevy hasn't sent out a recall. How many stories like this does it take for Chevrolet to do something about it? how many complaints have to be submitted about an abs motor that won't stop running unless the fuse is pulled? I sure hope chevy does something soon.
Driving with family abs light came on. When shutting down the engine, a pump noise continued. The pump continued to run and drained our battery leaving my family stranded. Tow truck mechanic, disconnected the pump, jump started our battery, and we brought the truck to the chevy dealer. Dealer said it was the abs module and would cost $1100 to repair! researched the internet and found there were many complaints about this problem.
Abs module failed on my 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 ext. Cab truck. The module stuck and kept abs running till I unpluged fuse. Luckly there was no accdent. But I checked with my dealer" no recall " said they had replaced lots of these module. So I had to have them replace at a cost of $923. 00. Guest that is why Chevrolet has not recalled!!!!.
On Monday, March 21st, 2005, when my 1999 chevy Silverado truck was started, the abs light came on and a loud buzzing sound from under the truck started. When the truck was turned off, the buzzing continued. The 60 a fuse was removed to finally making stop, after running the battery down the first day. This is a major safety issue that shoudl be recalled or on extended warranty. I read on a website that many many other truck owners have had the same problem. I am looking at upwards of $1200 to have this module on the abs pump fixed, and that might not solve the problem long term. It could happen again right away. I would appreciate gm or chevy recalling this malfucntion to the abs before a serious accident takes place. I purchashed a chevy truck to avoid these types of issues. Now I have a $1200 estimate to fix a problem that shoudl be under warranty or recalled. Please inform me as to how much chevy is willing to reimburse me on this major problem that is chevy/gm's fault. Michael a. Setlak 8937 nautical way new haven, in 46774.
Abs pump on my truck will not turn off and without abs the brake system could lock and injure many people. They should recall this before someone gets hurt.
While driving my 1999 chevy Silverado, the abs light came on and stayed on. A little searching brought me to the abs module on the frame under the left side of the passenger compartment. It was running, even after the vehicle was turned off and the key removed, it continued to run. I disconnected the power to the unit and tapped the wire up so as not to let it get wet,(obviously,it's carrying a lot of juce. ) when I took the truck to the dealer where I had purchased it the service manager told me that the entire module was bad and it would cost nearly 1000 dollars to fix. He said that the module itself was going to cost 761 dollars. It's my opinion that nothing more than an internal relay has gone bad and I know for a fact it has happened to others too. My truck has only 35,000 miles on it and shouldn't be presenting costly repairs like this while I'm still making payments on it and have babied it in the 13 months that I've owned it. If these modules are failing at the rate that it appears they are then chevy should recall them or come up with a less expensive solution like an external by-pass type relay that wouldn't involve replacing a costly module like this over some 5 or 10 dollar relay.
The abs & brake warning lights sporatically illuminate while driveing and will sometimes reset to normal after you shut engine off and remove key. This has continued for 2 or 3 months. Last week it finally went on and remained on and would not clear. I took the truck to the mechanic and his diagnostics indiacted a faulty ebcm. I have had it changed just today. I have checked with e others who also own this year truck Silverado and they also have had problem. Some have had it fixes and others not. The mechanic said is the abs light is iluminated then the abs is not operatable.
I own a 1999 chevy silerado ext. Cab,I'm having problems with the anti-lock brake system it engauges when it is not needed cause the truck not to stop properly. I have to leave the anti-lock brake fuse out to drive the truck.
The abs module is defective. The abs pump continues to run after the vehicle is turned off. My family has two of these vehicles and both have had the same problem. What does it take to get NHTSA or gm to realize that this is a safety related problem and do something about it before someone is injured?.
Abs brake failure with only 40,000 miles on the truck. The abs brakes would come on if I went over bumps or railroad tracks, and then I would have to pump my brakes to get them back (or the truck wouldn't stop). Finally, at 40,000 miles my abs light came on, my abs pump came on and would not turn off, and the chevy dealership told me my abs module blew. I was quoted $1,200 to replace it. Instead, I pulled my abs fuse and operate the vehicle without abs brakes as I refuse to pay for what I believe is a defective abs system. It is my humble opinion that chevy should recall and replace this defect.
Purchased 99 Silverado in Aug 2004, with only 22600 miles. Within 1000 miles my abs light came on, with a loud humming sound from under my truck. My abs module failed. Cost to replace just the part exceeds $800. 00. Gm say there is not a recallable issue, but every dealer/service dept I talked to stated it was a common problem. I do not have the money to replace it, abs fuse was removed so that the pump would not burn up.
The abs controller failed which allows abs pump to run continously. Must pull abs fuse to stop pump. Lack of abs system in pick-up truck very unsafe due to weight distribution. Have read many similar complaints specific to this model. . Read more...
Abs control module failed at 31,000 miles. Part alone is over $800. 00. Dealer apparently unwilling to do anything . Never buy a gm product again!! buy imports, they make better cars and provide superior service by far! when someone dies due to this problem, hope gm and NHTSA get the hell sued out of them for doing nothing to take care of a very serious safety issue that exist and both parties have known about for some time. Question to NHTSA! if I check fatalities box as 4 people dead!! then will you act???.
1999 full size Chevrolet truck-- frequent abs brake failures causes vehicles not to stop at low speeds problem could cause serious or fatal injury to individuals in parking of crosswalk instances.
Anti-lock break system failure on my 1999 Chevrolet Silverado pickup.
Abs and brake light turn on. No crashes or injuries yet. Gm knows of module problem but says item is not on recall.
The abs pump keeps running after the truck is turned off. Pump gets very hot and could cause fire. I had to unplug it to keep from overheating and in doing so I lost the anti-lock brakes. Now gm is going to take me for about $1600 for a problem they know they've had with this. This should be a recall.
After work today, I started my truck, the abs light went on, and a loud noise came from underneath the driver's side. I called my gm dealer, and he told me it was the abs module. He said a new one would cost from $400-500 dollars, plus an hour of labor. I bought it in July of 2003, spent a lot of money on accessories, and paid it off last month. Just after the dealer's warranty ran out(2300 mi), I now have an expensive repair. After much research and talking with parts supply companies, this is an on going problem. When will gm make ammends with their consumers? I am presenting 12 pages of documents to my dealer. Who knows, maybe they will admit there's a problem.
Abs module failure. Continues to run after truck is shut off.
Abs comes on and stays on. When ignition switch is turned off the montor on the brakes continues to run. The only way to stop it is to pull the fuse.
The service abs light on my 1999 Silverado went on, and I noticed a humming noise coming from under the driver side of my vehicle. I traced the noise to the abs control unit. The pump on this unit would continue to run after the ignition was turned off. The only way to stop the pump from continuously running was to remove the abs fuse which disables the abs braking system. I contacted gm but they're advice is to take to a dealership for repair. In the meantime, I am operating the vehicle with abs disabled.
Abs module runs contiually. Electronic brake control module attatched to the abs pump malfunctions, causing the pump to run continually, even after the vehicle has been switched off. Local dealer is aware of problem, and has seen it before on several occasions. Local salvage yards can't keep parts on hand because of high demand. There is no recall!!!!!!!! why???.
Abs failure - the abs light came on and loud humming noise coming from abs system when engine is off and key is removed. Had to pull 60a fuse to stop the abs system from continueing to make noise. Pulling this fuse also cause the main brake indicator light to stay on, thus I have no true indidcation presently if main brake failure occurs.
The ehcu for the abs system on my 1999' Chevrolet sivlerado went out after just 53000 miles. I have found endless complaints about this on the web and it is a severe safety issue that needs to be fixed.
Abs light came on then heard grinding sound of abs motor running. Turned off vehical abs motor still running without key. Took vehical to repair shop $1000 estimate to replace ebcm.
Humming noise coming from abs control module under left side rail. Pulled 60 amp fuse to stop from running. Contacted dealer and found that these modules go out all the time. $800 for parts and $250 for labor to install. After checking the internet I found this a widespread problem throughout the country. What will it take to get gm to fix this problem? there should be a recall on these units, this is a national highway safty issue.
I don't know if you got my previous complaint. 1999 Silverado,anti-lock brake module bad. Talked to the dealer this evening and cost will be $972. He is working with gm to see if they will eat any of the cost. I called gm and the lady was very nice but refused to admit this was a problem. From my internet research this is a major problem that should be addressed.
Abs motor continues to run after vehicle is turned off. Local dealer said he has to replace 1 module a week on the average. Why isn't there a recall?.
The abs brake controllmodule is defective, had to pull the 60 amp fuse to get the abs pump to stop running, the dealer says its a common problem and will cost $1000 to fix. Truck only has 53000 miles on it.
My wife backed out of the garage and the abs light came on. She pulled back in to the garage and turned the truck off. She heard a "motor running" sound from under the drivers seat. I believe after researching on the internet that the abs control module has shorted out. Pulled the fuse causing the abs and parking brake lights to stay on. Very disappointed to hear there have been numerous failures of this module with no relief from gm. Was told by the dealer that the repair would cost approx. $1000.
Abs electronic brake control module failed on truck. Replacement cost was $860. 00. After reviewing the complaints on the internet this appears to be a common problem which the manufacturer should be responsible for fixing.
The abs control module went out on my 1999 chevy Silverado z-71 (four wheel disk) with only 60,000 miles. I was told the part would cost $1147. 00 from gm, not including tax or labor. The abs pump and motor continued to run until I disconnected the 60 amp fuse. Of course, now the abs warning light stays on. I have since learned of at least 30 others Silverado owners with the same problem. The 99 model seems to have the most problem. Gm refuses to recall the part, which is very expensive. Many of the other "victims" had less mileage on their vehicles than mine.
Abs pump failure resulting in loss of abs braking ability. Abs pump remained on after even after igniton was shut off. Had to remove abs fuse to get abs pump to shut off.
