Air Brake Antilock problems of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado

28 problems related to air brake antilock have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2005

Anti-lock brakes engage at low speed braking. The sensors have been cleaned twice, and the abs module has been replaced. Total cost for these is $1,100. 00.

2 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2004

While vehicle was under warranty I complained of fading brakes while traversing rough spots in roads. Dealership mechanics said it was the abs system. He said I could disconnect it?but I chose not to. Now my 1999 Silverado has an even bigger problem. While performing a gentle stop the brake pedal becomes hard and vehicle will not stop unless I stand on the brake pedal. I crashed through my garage door the last time this happened. My brakes were inspected and they are all in good order. The mechanic did however notice that the abs was on constantly. ( so does someone have to die before action is taken on this matter) there is numerous complaint about the abs system in this truck.

3 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2004

Low speed activation of abs, tried to remedy with gm despite their awareness of the problem and a known design defect, they declined any assistance in the repair.

4 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2004

Like so many others, my abs system has gone out on my 1999 chevy Silverado, I was simply driving to town when the light came on, 34,000 miles on the vehicle. The motor kept running even when the vehicle was turned off, I immediately proceeded to my asc certified mechanic who reviewed the vehicle and informed me my abs module is shot and the estimated repair cost is $1000. 00+ (partially due to no aftermarket parts available. ) so not only is gm unwilling to acknowledge the problem, they are compounding the pain for owners by holding a monopoly on the repair part. Unacceptable - a recall is in order - this is a serious safety issue gm is not addressing.

5 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2003

1999 Chevrolet Silverado has two problems with brakes. First problem is that truck continues to go full speed after hitting brakes if there is any uneven roadway or if road is wet or if any number of other conditions exist. Very scary when it won't stop. 2nd complaint is abs module went out at 34,000 miles and 42 months. Was told that it was not under warranty. Spent $900 to replace, did not solve any of my braking problems. It is scary to drive because you never know when it will decide not to stop. Cannot identify a single date, the stopping problem has happened too many times to enumerate.

6 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 01/08/2003

Abs system is not working properly. Also, intermittently abs light. Come on. Dealer has been notified. Ts.

7 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2002

Consumer stated that while driving and without warning the abs failed causing the consumer to have extended stopping distance. Dealer notified. Ts.

8 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 11/25/2002

When brake applied at slow speed, truck failed to slow down with constant brake pressure. I almost rear-ended vehicle in front of me. Pavement was clean and dry. I have also been getting abs chatter when stopping at slow speeds. Dt.

9 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2002

Many people simply pull fuse or disconnect abs pump power and go without abs because of the cost of repairs. Due to the number of vehicles experiencing the same failure, this could be a significant safety problem. Dt.

10 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2002

I have talked with over 50 people just in the knoxville area that have had this same problem - a "burnt out electrical delay in the abs unit" - costing upwards of $1000 to fix. I have put less than 5000 on this vehicle from my date of purchase earlier this year. I am still under dealer warranty and I will be demanding a refund and an explanation. If so many people are having this same exact problem, some people told me it is caused by water from the left tire splashing on the speed sensors, vitrually rendering them useless, then why isn't there a recall? dt.

11 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 11/02/2002

Consumer noticed the at home didn't have antilock brake system. Dealer has not been notified yet. Please provide further information . Mr.

12 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2002

The break pedel becomes rock hard and the truck will not stop have to use the emergancy brake when the antilock brake fuse is removed the brakes work fine. Before I removed the fuse was almost in many crashes, if I had not used the e brake!!!!!!!!!! dt.

13 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2002

The abs motor keeps running after the truck is cut off. The only way to stop it is to pull the fuse, so I have no abs. Gm finds ways to get out of their warranties and could careless that they are creating safety problems. When you pay $26,000 for something you expect it to work and extended warranties should be just that instead of ways to suck out more money from buyers. Dt.

14 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2002

Abs module fails, and antilock brake are inoperatable. Module is located under the truck on the frame rail. This probably causes water to short it out. Dt.

15 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2002

No summary. Dt.

16 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 10/23/2002

Ecbm shorted out. Located on top of abs brake pump, attached to frame under drivers seat. Dealer wanted $1100 to fix, $770 part. Bought part $409 (discount) had installed for $300, called Chevrolet service help. No help!! got other recalls fixed at dealer. Dealer nor me couldn't get hold of chevorlet service help. Ecbm located where water can damage it. Seems to be a problem with 1999. Dt.

17 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2002

Abs pump continued to run with vehicle off. Abs/brake light remain on seems to be a very common problem. Dt.

18 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2002

Consumer states that the module that controls the abs failed, resulting in no abs brakes, when needed. Dealer contacted, this is a common problem. Ts.

19 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 06/18/2002

The module that controls the abs is failing to turn the abs motor off when the truck is stopped. I have contacted chevy and they have said there is nothing that can be done but said this is a common problem with these trucks. It was not mentioned at the time of purchase. I have searched the internet concerning this issue and it is filled with message boards complaining of this same issue. How much more has to be done to start a recall campaign for this? dt.

20 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2002

Antilock brack module failed at approximately 42,000 miles.

21 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 03/13/2001

The abs pump continues to run even after ignition is turned off, thus draining battery. Inorder to stop pump the abs must be disabled resulting in a dangerous situation, driving the vehicle wih compromised stopping ability which can result in an accident causing bodily harm or even death.

22 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2000

The failure of the abs ecu and pump are due to the location of the unit which is located under the vehicle below the drivers seat. The abs unit is in the direct spash path of the front left tire. I dont think the engineers that designed this unit took into consideration that the abs ecu and pump get a presure wash evertime it rains. When the unit failed I went to the dealer in norman, ok (mark heitz) and talked to the service manager about it. He told me that they replace these units quite often because they get water in them and short out. Not being familiar with the unit I asked more question. The ecu is sealed to the pump and when water enters through the seal it shorts out the ecu and starts rusting out the pump. The rust in the pump concerns me because it can potentialy contaminate the brake fluid and cause brake failure. Tom-the service manager at mark heitz exact words "the pump had water in it and it was full of rust" mark heitz phone number is 405-321-7021. The other failure is the parking break. I dont think it ever worked the day it came off the dealer lot. The first time I tried toused the parking brake was at beaver lake in arkansas on a camping trip. This was last summer -summer of 2000-. I parked on a steep hill and applied the parking break . The pedal went to the floor rater easily and I thought nothing of it, that was unitll I got in the truck and tried to put it in drive, I had a hard time getting it out of park. The nut on the tensioner shaft to the parking brake system under the truck is completely tightened. The cable brances off to each rear caliper and is each attached to a lever on the calipers. I've observed the levers move and still no parking brake. The levers look to be fully engaged, that is the levers are pulled as far forward as possible by the cables. It's a great feeling to know that you've paid thirty grand for a vehicle with problems. If you have any question I can be reached at any time on my mobile 405. 205. 6621-thanks.

23 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2000

Abs failed on wet surface, spun 450 deg, after spin failed to stop vehicle. History: appoximately 4-6 times over a nine month period, when the brakes were first applied they did not appear to work. Upon releasing the brake and reapplying, the brakes then worked. Then over three month period the brakes began to feel choppy when stopping. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and all four rotors needed to be turned (only 10000 miles on vehicle). Two days later on a wet surface, going 16-20 mph on a right turn with a slight uphill grade, when the brakes were applied the back end of the truck came spinning around in a clockwise direction. At 90 degrees the brake was released. The truck spun a total of 450 degrees. Then the brakes were applied hard, you could hear the sound of the abs but the truck did not respond at all, there was no braking action. The vehicle crashed head on into a guard rail. The entire front bumper needs replacing. Fortunately no one was injured.

24 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2000

When stopping on rough road the brakes released and then locked up. I talked to the dealer and they advised they haven't received any complaints on the brake systems. Problem was not resoved.

25 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2000

The abs system/pump made a terrible sound and the warning light came on inside the vehicle. I contacted the dealer who stated just to unplug the abs power supply but the brakes were fine. Another friend, julian scaff, has the same make/model/year truck and has had the exact abs failure. Both were at approx. 45,000 miles. I have also had problems with the rear brakes locking up and not unlocking for a few minutes. This has caused untold wear and reduced fuel milage considerably. These are serious safety issues.

26 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2000

Front brakes don't have a sure stop when going over a bump. Dealer has seen vehicle several for the problem, but can not find anything wrong.

27 Air Brake Antilock problem

Failure Date: 12/15/1999

The brakes get hard and won't work, then they suddenly lock up. This has happened to us several times, and to the service guy once. The first two times it was in for service, they couldn't duplicate the problem. After they went out on the service guy, they replaced the brake booster. They went out again, and they replaced the master cylinder. They just went out again, at an intersection, and we almost had an accident. It is back at the chevy dealer, but they don't know, and chevy doesn't know what to do with it. This is a dangerous situation. Is anyone else reporting problems with these trucks?.

28 Air Brake Antilock problem

Abs brakes severly resist the operators attempts to bring the vehicle to a stop at slow speed. The brake pedal vibrates but increased pressure by the operator will not being the vehicle to a stop. You have to take your foot off of the pedal completely, then slam it down with force to get the truck to jerk to a stop many feet past where it would normally stop. This frequently causes a loss of control at slow speed such as pulling up to a gas pump or stopping at an intersection. On numerous occasions, the vehicle failed to stop until it was well into an intersection. Dealer would not repair unless "the abs light came on" which it never did. Owner removed the abs fuse and the vehicle stops normally with abs disabled. Owner investigation revealed that this is a common problem on the 1999 Silverado which requires nearly $1000 to repair, but gm will not cover the repair of these obviously defective abs systems.
