Having recently moved into north carolina, my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck failed the north carloina state inspection because of the failure of the parking brake to hold the vehicle. The parking brake has not been working for several years, even after brake service on the rear wheels. The manufacturer service bulletin has only been for manual transmission vehicles which does not include my vehicle with automatic transmission. Vehicle failed to pass required inspection due to the emergency brake failing to hold the vehicle when engaged and transmission in drive. Emergency brake pedal has always gone to the floor when engaged. Emergency brake rarely applied. Vehicle has less than 35,000 miles.

Parking brake on 2001 chevy Silverado 4wd automatic. Has been out since 40,000 mile mark. There is an existing recall for the manual transmission, but not the automatic. The dealer, molle Chevrolet in blue springs,mo, insisted a charge of $ 400 to $ 600 for a repair on a basic safety feature. I know of two additional vehicles with same problem just in my neighborhood. Why does the recall affect only manuals, when the same system is used on automatics and they have displayed the same failure.
Parking brake failure. When new the parking brake pedal went easily to the floor, but the vehicle would hold on a hill with the transmission in neutral. Dealer advised that although tis didn't feel right, it was a new design and was working properly. Within a couple of years, engaging the parking brake pedal didn't do any good - the vehicle would not hold on a hill. I could not adjust brake myself as it appeared to be some sort of hydraulic system rather than a regular one. Mechanic advised that job would cost $100. So be it. Chevy wouldn't cover it. Now, brake will, again, not hold and chevy won't do anything.
I have a 2001 chevy 2500hd truck with the parking brake problem. I notice by this web site that I'm not the only one. Since I have a automatic transmission, it isn't covered under the recall. (#05v161000) I contacted my local dealer about the problem and they told me they won't touch it. They would touch it for about $1000. 00. Chevy knows they have a problem with this system, why don't they make it right with the persons that prefers chevy products. As of date below, I have a parking brake that is non-functional, even though it hasn't caused a crash, it is only a matter of time.
2001 Chevrolet Silverado. The consumer received recall # 05v161000/gm recall #05042 from the NHTSA website. The emergency brake was not working. The consumer took the vehicle to dealer to be inspected, the consumer paid for the inspection. The consumer had the vehicle for a couple of months. The consumer felt that GMC should cover the cost for having the emergency brake fixed. .
2001 Chevrolet Silverado. The consumer stated the emergency brake on the vehicle failed. According to the dealership the part will wear out if not used. The consumer has not contacted GMC about the problem. He found this after the vehicle failed inspection on September 6, 2005.
Dt:the emergency brake prematurely failed. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer because the emergency brake would not hold when the vehicle was parked on a hill. When using the brake it would make a metal on metal type noise. The dealer repaired the emergency brake shoes, and serviced the inner drum of the rear rotors. The vehicle only had 43,576 miles when this occured. It was repaired on August 30, 2005. There is service bulletin # 020526002 for the same thing.
The emergency brake does not work. Our truck is only at 47k miles and we have never used the emergency brake - we have never needed to. We are now trying to sell it and I'm finding that this is a common problem with many of these trucks. . Read more...
I have a 2001 Chevrolet z71 truck, and the parking brakes will not pass the texas safety inspection. The parking brake system should not fail during the lifetime of a vehicle, particularly since it has only 75000 miles.
The parking brake on my 2001 Chevrolet Silverado with an automatic transmission does not function or hold the truck from movement at all. Chevrolet dealership will not rememdy this problem without a significate repair charge. This vehicle has only 40,000 miles and no other brake issues. Gm just recently issued a recall on this exact brake system but limited it to only vehicles. The text from a news publication on this recall reads: "the 1500 series of the chevy Silverado between 1999-2002 and GMC sierra pickups, the 2500 and 3500 series, between 2001-04, to repair the parking brake. The recall only affects trucks with manual transmissions, a total of 142,585 vehicles. Friction can lead to parking brake failures, which could allow unattended vehicles to move, gm said. " I have a serious concern with my parking brake, and it seems gm does as well, but limits it to manual transmission vehicles. Does this imply the parking brake on my automatic truck is not needed??.

My 2001 chrevrolet Silverado truck has about 35,000 miles on it. I recently tried to actuate the emergency brake when parked. I discovered that the brake will not keep the vehicle from moving. It provides very little resistance when the engine is idleing and the transmission is in drive or reverse. I know of no damage done to the brakes that would cause this. This could result in the vehicle rolling downhill without a driver under certain circumstances. It could also result in injury to a person changing a tire or performing other maintenance which requires that the emergency brake be set.

Consumer placed the vehicle in park and exited the vehicle leaving two minor children inside. The consumer noticed that the vehicle was rolling and attempted to catch the vehicle. The consumer fell and the vehicle rolled over her body. The consumer sustain severe bodily injuries. The vehicle struck a tree causing injuries and damages.
While the vehicle was parked the emergency brake failed. This caused the vehicle to roll down the hill and ran over the driver. Driver sustained major injuries, and was transported to the hospital. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection.
During a routine inspection, the consumer was informed that their emergency brake have failed the test. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The cause was not determined. Please provide more information.
The parking brake fails to release the rear wheel when the handle is lifted. It has failed in the winters of 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004. The light on the dashboard goes out. One rear wheel is released. The other is not. The system fails repeatedly, making the driver hesitant to use the parking brake, for fear of not being able to resume movement.

The truck failed inspection due to the parking brake being ineffective. The inspector was able to accelerate slightly and easily move the vehicle while the parking brake was activated. I live in texas where the parking brake is not necessary on a regular basis. Therefore, I feel there is no reason for failure other than manufacturer defect. I had the first of two repairs done at lawrence marshall Chevrolet in hempstead, TX. The other repair was done by a private mechanic. I sold the vehicle in may 2005.
I failed my state inspection due to the parking brake not holding. 3 different shops have told me this is a faulty design and needs to be replaced every two years regardless of use. This is not wear & tear, as I do not use my parking brake. This is a very expensive repair for something I don't use and should not wear out.
Parking brake will not hold vehicle on an incline and barely works when vehicle is level. With the parking brake on and the vehicle level the truck can be moved forward or reverse with the engine at idle speed when placed in gear. The parking brake is useless on even the slightest incline and the truck will roll freely in forward or reverse.

They would constantly fix it while under warranty, and currently they will not do it. A recall was issued but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN. The caller said the emergency brake does not hold. The vehicle's with manual transmission have been recalled for the emergency brake (05v161000), but not vehicles with automatic transmissions. The caller said he thought both vehicles should be recalled. Dealer and manufacturer offered no help for free.
The contact stated thata recall was issued in April of 2005 for the parking brake, only including manual transmission. However, consumer's vehicle has automatic transmission, and he has had problems with parking brake. He states that the parking brake would not hold, it would just roll. From the time he purchased the vehicle there was no pressure on parking brake pedal, and this was unlike any vehicle park brake he had seen. Dealer told him that this was the way the new brakes were in vehicles. The parking brake was replaced, and worked well since then.
Right after purchase of the vehicle owner noticed there was no resistance in the parking brake. Owner noticed this after parking the vehicle in a parking lot. Then, the owner realized about a year ago that the vehicle can be operated with the parking brake engaged. There is recall 05042 for the same problem, but the recall is for manual transmission.

It does not and never has been very effective.
The parking brake was defective. When parking the brake went all the way to the floor. When placing truck in gear with the parking brake on it will drive. Dealer stated that warranty expired. Dealer wanted to change the rotors and parts, but consumer would be charged for repairs. The consumer stated that the brake did not work from purchase. The consumer by another dealer that the brake was a poor design and would fail if driven 100 feet with the brake set.
