36 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/22/2012

I was quite fortunate to have been leaving a parking spot and had just left "park" shifted into drive and applied the brake because a pedestrian stepped out. At that time the pedal hit the floor, I steered the truck in the opposite direction from the person, headed for a part of the lot where there were no cars, applied the parking brake, it did'nt work either, so I put it into park. All this and I hadnt applied the gas to the vehicle. Only moments before I parked, I had been traveling on the expressway at 70 mph. When I got out of the truck, all the brake fluid was on the ground. Upon closer investigation, we noticed the brake lines were rotted out completely. We feel lucky that no one was injured or killed. Very angry at Chevrolet.

40 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2011

After securing 10 pallets in the bed of the truck and beginning the drive home from the local lumber yard, I depressed the breaks to stop at the first light. The brake pedal went to the floor, so I downshifted and began to depress the emergency brake to stop. At this point I had my wife pick up the children so they would not be in the vehicle with me. I proceeded home (less that 1. 5 miles) at a reduced speed of approximately 10 miles an hour. Depressing the brake provided marginal stopping capability. It was sufficient stopping power for a vehicle traveling about 10 miles per hour at 100 feet. Under the vehicle after the antilock braking box, the one line was spraying brake fluid when the pedal was depressed. The rust was so severe, when going to cut the line, the line actually crushed inwards with no apparent good metal. In splicing the line I was unable to find the proper clearance to reconnect the line to the antilock braking box, so my mechanic will be working this shortly. The other lines look equally bad so I will have those replaced as well. I have never seen rust this bad on my vehicles even older than this one. Pictures and or pieces of the brake line can be supplied upon request.

41 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2011

I attempted to stop at a stop light. When I depressed the brake pedal it went to the floor and I realized that I had no brakes. I was able to slow down enough to make it through the light and into a parking lot. After a quick inspection I found that the steel brake line going to the rear brakes rusted through, and was spewing brake fluid. This truck is a 2002 model with only 88k miles and is well maintained. I don't think the brake lines should rust through and fail this soon. This is a major safety problem. I was lucky. I was driving slow, was not on a busy street and didn't have an accident. It could have caused a terrible accident! it has not been repaired yet.

55 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2010

After driving 400 miles to laurel springs ,nc from baltimore ,MD through mountain roads and arriving at our destination my wife parked our truck , we got out to go in and open up the house. I then went back to the truck and got in to move it closer to the house to unpack our belongings for a weeks vacation. I started the vehicle and placed it in drive only to have the brakes go all the way to the floor . I then took a flashlight and had my son pump the brake pedal and brake fluid was gushing from the brakeline. I took a file and scraped what looks like little balls of rust and behind the ten or so balls found a hole the size of ball point pen tip. I then spent two days replacing the brake line form parts at the not so close auto zone. I find it hard to believe that 8 year old brake lines would rust that badly , I've had 20 year old vehicle s that didn't have brake lines rust out. I'm just lucky that the line broke after getting to my destination and not on the mountain roads we were traveling. I have the old brake line but left it at the house in nc.

57 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem

Failure Date: 11/23/2009

I am the original owner of a 1500 series, 2002 silverado, residing in south florida. While exiting the ramp off the highway, at 50 mph, with a 7,600 pound car trailer in tow, I depressed the brake pedal, and it went to the floor! only with the use of the manual override of my electric trailer brakes was I able to stop, avoiding a near miss collision, and a serious, perhaps fatal accident. It was determined one of the brake lines leaked and failed as a "rust and corrosion". The vehicle had 52,300 at the time of the incident, and in florida since purchasing new. With the help of a friend, a temporary repair was made using a compression fitting to allow us to continue our 90 mile trip home. The truck was taken to the dealership who confirmed "rust and corrosion" was the cause, however there were no recalls, or warranty, and I would be required to pay the cost of $738. 00 to replace all the lines. At that time I had little choice but to authorize them to proceed. However after completion of the work and my inspection, the lines were installed using interconnecting fittings, at various locations, and not continuous lines as was originally supplied by the factory, nor was placement. I now question the safety of the repair. The dealership advised the work they performed was the method authorized by gm, and continuous lines were not available from the factory. This is probably because gm does not offer them, as the brake lines should have lasted the life of the truck. I have concluded that the material used for the brake lines were of very poor quality. I have contacted gm and continue to await a response from their engineering. The dealership has further advised there was nothing further they could do, and the gm area representative confirmed that with them. I question if it takes a number of deaths as a result of poor quality brake lines before gm takes some action. In searching the internet, I have found many reports relating to the same problem. So, what will gm do?.

I saw the newspaper article on the possible brake failure on 99-03 pickup trucks. This happened to my son in my 2002 chevy silverado in my driveway which is about 100 feet long. He pushed on the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. Luckily he was going slow. There was brake fluid in the driveway. I was outside at the time and got in and pumped the brakes. None. I had to have it towed to a repair shop and they replace a defective brake line. Your article has made me fearful for my family.
