1 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2020

I started to notice my my brakes and steering components are very unsafe, my steering wheel has to much play, something inside the steering makes a loud clunking noise when I hit a bump, the brakes don't operate correctly, the truck shakes and makes the steering very difficult to control when applying the brakes due to the shaking and vibration. I was told it might be leaking hydraulic fluid. But to sum it all up today on 06-02-2020, I realized the truck is only getting worse and getting harder to steer and the brakes cause the steering to make it even harder to drive with all the shaking and pulling to the side and also I noticed the brake pedal will be really hard at times and then really light at times.

2 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 10/02/2017

Yesterday my brake pedal went to the floor and I could not stop the truck. I put my blinkers on and drove about two miles an hour to my regular mechanic and he said all the brake lines need to be replaced because the are rusted out and leaking fluid to a cost of $750. 00. It is in the shop right now so I won't have the invoice for a few days. He also said the the fuel lines look rusted also and hopes they won't break while fixing the brake lines.

3 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2016

When parking in my driveway, my brake pedal went to floor and I was barely able to stop. My brake lines were leaking fluid due to severe corrosion and must be replaced for over $3000. 00. Fortunately this did not occur while I was driving on the street.

4 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 11/19/2015

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the brake failed. While, hauling a trailer when, the brake pedal was engaged the brake pedal lose pressure and stick to the vehicle floor board. The contact was able down shift the vehicle coasted onto the road shoulder and brought the vehicle to stop with the rear brake. The contact inspected the vehicle and found the brake lines corroded causing the brake fluid to leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000. Li.

5 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2015

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving at approximately 60 mph, the brake pedal was difficult to depress. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rear brake lines fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Two months later, the contact observed a puddle of brake fluid on the ground under the front of the vehicle, which caused the brake lines to fracture. The vehicle was taken back to an independent mechanic where it was confirmed that the front brake lines fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.

6 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2015

I was traveling down the road towing my trailer and went to stop and brake pedal went the floor I was able to get off road in the grass and slow down to a stop looked under truck drivers side near front and brake fluid was pouring out at the plastic brackets the were rusted very badly all the lines. I was a gm mechanic for 10 yrs of my life and this is the worst I have ever seen. I can tell all the lines needs replaceing they are all the bends are very rusted from front to back .

7 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 12/23/2014

I backed up to hook my truck up to the trailer, as I pulled ahead I stepped on the brakes and the pedal went straight to the floor. Brake fluid was leaking directly under the driver from the brake line that went over the frame into the abs.

8 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2014

Approaching a red light when applying the brakes the pedal went to the floor. Luck had it that I proceeded through the red light and the intersection without being involved in an accident. Upon inspection, brake fluid was leaking behind the front wheel driver side. The underside of the truck is in good condition with the exception for the brake lines. All the brake lines were extremely corroded. It is obvious in the appearance, that the material used to make the brake lines were not consistent with the corrosion resistance of the other components of the vehicle. The brake line failed to the front brakes. There was not enough remaining braking by the rear brakes to stop the vehicle.

9 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/21/2014

After running errands I was returning home and when I came down my street the brakes did not work. The pedal went all the way to the floor. Luckily I was traveling slow and was able to stop with my e-brake. I looked under the truck and found brake fluid dripping under the drivers door. The brake lines had rusted . I got the truck to a brake shop where they found all of my brake lines were badly rusted and it cost approx. $1000. 00 to repair. I can't understand why Chevrolet would make stainless steel exhaust but not stainless steel brake lines. This truck has only 27000 miles on it.

10 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 04/05/2014

Applied the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor with no braking effect and no warning. Had to swerve off the road to avoid a car making a left hand turn. Drove the truck home slowly, pumping the brakes to get what little stopping power I could. Brake fluid was dripping from underneath the truck. Inspected the source of the leak and all brake lines going into the abs control unit were very badly corroded with at least one leaking fluid. Upon further inspection, corrosion in one form or another was evident in all the brake lines that were visible in the truck chassis. This appears to be a material defect.

11 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 02/19/2014

The vehicle had sat overnight and I started it to drive it to work the next morning. As I was shifting from park to reverse, the brake pedal seemed to go down farther than usual but allowed me to shift as expected. As I started moving backwards, after trying to apply the brakes, the pedal went to the floor and were not working. The service lights appeared and I believe the chime sounded. I did not have any braking ability so I applied the emergency brake. It was discovered one of the metal lines on the rear had ruptured/failed due to corrosion and all of the fluid had leaked out. I feel extremely lucky this did not happen in busy traffic or approaching an intersection with stopped vehicles and taveling at a much higher speed because I would not have been able to stop or react quick enough to apply the emergency brake and even if I had attempted it, I doubt it would have been enough to stop the vehicle in time.

12 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/16/2013

I was approaching an intersection on NJ state route 10 when the light turned yellow. I applied the brakes and the peddle went to about one to two inches off the floor. The truck could not stop, and went though the light as is turned red. I was able to slow down and pull into a parking lot and stop. I found fluid leaking under the truck and could see it was from a failed brake line. I called a tow truck and a mechanic. I found out that the brake line were all rusted and needed to be replaced. The rotors, calipers, brake pads, e brake cable and shocks where replaced.

13 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2013

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet silverado c 1500. The contact stated that when the brake pedal was depressed, the brakes would become stuck to the floor board. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that brake fluid on was leaking and the brake lines were corroded. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for further inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 68,000.

14 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2013

Spontaneous front and rear brake failure on a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 lt pickup truck. I was pulling up to my driveway and applied the brakes. The pedal went to the floor and I tried to pump the brake with no success. No prior brake level or abs or proportioning valve warning lights were indicated. I applied the emergency brake and came to a stop. Once I parked the truck I noticed brake fluid dripping down below the driver's door. I crawled under to discover that all four steel brake lines were completely rusted and fluid was steadily coming out. A large puddle under the truck had accumulated over a short time. I noticed that the fuel lines were also severely rusted in the same area. I am 65 years old and have owned many vehicles over my lifetime (including classic cars), but I have never had a brake line rust as bad as these. I am extremely lucky that I wasn't on an interstate highway and had to make a quick stop for traffic ahead. More seriously than the rusted lines is the fact that no prior warning was given before total failure. Dual master cylinders and isolated front and rear lines did not perform as designed. I have been on the internet today and understand that this is not an isolated problem. I can just imagine other people/families who will not be as lucky as me if this continues without something being done to warn and correct the situation. This should be on the news and gm should be involved and resolving the issue. Thanks.

15 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving 10 mph on snowy conditions the contact depressed his service breaks and suddenly with out warning his foot depressed to the floor and the brakes failed to engage. Luckily for the contact the contact vehicle crashed on to a snow embankment. The contact was not injured. The contact took the vehicle to an independent mechanic. The mechanic stated his brake hose had severely corroded causing the hose to fracture and all the brake fluid leak out. The brake hose would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 65,000. Az.

16 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2012

While traveling on wet/snowy road depressed brake pedal to stop the truck and pedal went to floor. Had to pump pedal several times to maintain pressure and stop. Once home, I saw brake fluid leaking from underneath vehicle on driver's side at approximately door location. Brake lines severely corroded. $1700 emergency repair on new year's weekend. Calipers replaced also due to corroded bleeders. Abs has also stopped working/malfunctioned on this truck.

17 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2012

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes but the brake line rupture without any warnings. As a result, the brake pedal stuck to the floorboard and brake fluid was spewing out from underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 87,000.

18 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2012

Brake line failure - braking ability loss. While stopped at a red light I noticed that the brake pedal was slowly fading and moving toward the floor. I assumed that the brake system was failing in some way and drove very carefully. I stopped and inspected the vehicle and saw that fluid was leaking from a brake line under the master cylinder area, I still had use of the rear brakes, apparently only the front side had leaked. I never lost control of the vehicle fortunately, as I became aware of the problem while stopped. If the failure had occurred while driving at highway speed things could have been very different. My local mechanic replaced the two brake lines that run from the equalizer to the abs unit at a cost of nearly $300. 00. All the lines were badly corroded but I can't afford to replace them proactively right now. Having read many other similar complaints I believe that gm should do something about this before more damage, serious injury or even death occurs.

19 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/19/2012

Brake lines resting on top of chassis in driver's front wheel well corroded and breached/leaked brake fluid. Vehicle is in michigan.

20 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2012

After returning to the truck from an errand I started the engine and, upon depressing the brake pedal to put the vehicle in gear, the brake pedal went to the floor. No warning lamps of any sort were illuminated prior to the brake pedal going to the floor. Pumping of the pedal did not produce any resistance. After a few minutes the brake fluid level warning lamp came on. Brake fluid was added but did not result in any resistance from the pedal. Had to have the truck towed home where it then sat over-night. The next morning I observed a large wet spot on the driveway just below the driver’s side door. I looked underneath and saw that all of the brake lines going into or out of the abs module were severely corroded and at least one had obviously been leaking brake fluid. The truck was towed to a Chevrolet dealer. I arrived as they were raising the truck on a lift. Evidently they also added some brake fluid because quite a large puddle was forming on the shop floor below where the brake lines enter the abs module. The technician, the service consultant, and I all observed the rusted brake lines, and fluid was literally dripping from one that had obviously burst. The dealer advised that gm does not make replacement steel brake lines so all the lines would need to be hand fabricated by the technician. Dealer also advised that the abs module may have to be replaced because of how corroded the brake line fittings are (fittings are steel, abs module is aluminum) where they screw into the module. We also observed that the fuel lines were severely corroded. I have owned many vehicles far older and with far more mileage and have never had to replace the steel brake lines. I believe the design is flawed (the routing and placement of lines and module) or the brake line material (steel, instead of stainless steel) is insufficient. I have photos and the old parts.

21 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2011

Brake line failure. Lines completely rusted, and leaking fluid. The failure happened just after unhooking a small trailer I was pulling loaded with 2000 lb of sand and gravel.

22 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 10/14/2011

Was about to pull out onto the highway when the brake pedal went to the floor. With truck in park, checked underneath and noticed puddles of brake fluid on the ground. Turned truck around and parked it using the parking brake to slow/stop. After parking the truck, the instrument cluster said to service brakes soon. Further investigation revealed the hydraulic brake lines along the frame rail are prematurely deteriorated. All need replacing.

23 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2011

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph the contact applied pressure to the brake pedal approaching a red light and fell to the floor. The contact pulled the emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The tow truck driver informed the contact that the brake line was broken. Brake fluid was leaking and the under carriage was severely covered with rust. The vehicle was in the dealers possession for diagnostic testing and repairs. The approximate failure mileage was 52,000 . The dealer replaced all the steel brake lines and bled the brake system. Updated 05/19/11.

24 Brake Fluid Leak problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2010

My daughter and 10 year old grand daughter borrowed the truck to go to a store,a short distance. She came to a red traffic light and with no warning the brake peddle went to the floor. Traffic was moving across the intersection in the 35 mph zone on a green light. My daughter made the correct panic decision to quickly turn right into the traffic flow shoulder to avoid being hit broad side. I had driven the truck within the hour before the near accident with no indication of a problem. No leaking brake fluid smell, no dash lights, no low brake peddle. All brake fluid drained from the failed brake line under the cab, so much for the duel braking system!! all brake lines were replaced.
