This vehicle has had a previous recall for power steering failure at low speeds due to voltage issues. The recall and software update was performed in September of 2017. I have recently been experiencing the same symptoms from the previous recall. I have noticed when driving at low speeds I will temporarily loose power steering. This has happened approximately 5 times in the last month. It usually occurs when I am in a parking lot, pulling into a parking space, at low speeds 5-10 mph, and when I am turning. The power steering stops working for a second or so and then comes right back. I have also noticed while traveling on the highway or interstate my headlights flickering as if there is a low voltage issue. The voltage meter has been in the normal operating range, and I have had no warning lights or alarms when these incidents have occurred. Most recent incident occurred today 4/30/19 when pulling into a parking space at a local restaurant.
Approx. 1 week ago while driving on a city street, stabilitrak error pops up on screen and power steering goes out while attempting to park. A few days later while driving on highway with cruise control on and engaged, stabilitrak error displays again. Initiated my turn signal to signal lane change which disengaged the cruise control. A couple of days later, while driving on the highway with cruise control on but not engaged, the cruise control engaged on it's own causing the engine to rev as an attempt was made to slow the vehicle. Dealership says it might be negative battery cable assembly and fuse block and said it would cost me $768 but there is no guarantee it will fix the problem and is likely just the starting point. Had the recall done back in August of 2018 for the loss of power steering (where they simply erased the software and loaded new software) so the dealership takes no responsibility for the issue.
Product safety recall 17276 loss of steering assist -- my truck is not involved in this recall, but I am having the exact issues described in the recall, sudden loss and return of eps assist. This happens at low speeds when turning or backing, both forward and reverse motions. I am also having issues with the cruise control shutting off intermittently when activating the turn indicator to change lanes. I understand that this may be related to this recall, as the electrical software issues can cause other electrical systems to become temporarily disabled, such as the radio, stabilitrack, dic, chimes, door-lock cycling, air conditioning, or cruise control. Also, when the turn indicator is activated and the cruise control shuts off, the dash lights also flicker. I have already had this truck in to the dealer once to fix this, and they refused to run the recall because my truck was not in the recall group. Instead they charged me over $1,000 to replace a steering wheel position sensor, which I now doubt was the problem since the issues with loss of steering and disabling of cruise control have returned. I just want this fixed.
At slow speeds (mostly when turning) power steering will go out. I've had 3 instances where the truck completely shut off and just as many where it felt like it was about to shut off. Other symptoms have been while driving on highway, generally on a longer trip, warnings about stabiltrack needing service come on, my lane departure sensor will automatically switch from vibrate to audible beep, dimming my headlights or turning my turn signal on will cancel cruise control. I had the recall for software fix for power steering issues applied in September 2017 where previously I experienced none of these issues. All of these issues have been after the recall software fix was applied. The dealer says it's due to a film that builds up on the battery cable connection and causes it to not have a good connection with the battery. Apparently there is a bulletin out for this issue but it isn't a recall so dealers are charging around $700 to fix this. Having your truck turn off while driving is a clear safety issue and one that is much worse than the recall for having your power steering go out when turning at slow speeds.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced a loss of power. Also, the abs and stabilitrak warning indicators illuminated. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. Eddy's Chevrolet Cadillac (8801 e kellogg dr, wichita, KS) diagnosed that the battery was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The contact received notification of the vehicle being involved in a TSB. The vehicle was taken to davis-moore Chevrolet (8200 w kellogg dr, wichita, KS) where a software update was performed; however, the failure recurred on six occasions. The manufacturer was not made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 54,000.
I was having what I thought was an electrical problem. In traffic after hitting my breaks many times I noticed my dash lights go dim, the radio would cut out once in a while and my gauge cluster would reset just like it looks when you first start the truck. This happened several times in approx. 30 min. I was planning on taking it in the first chance I got but the next day I was driving in my residential neighborhood, a car was coming the opposite way when and I hit my breaks the steering wheel violently jerked out of my hand and caused the vehicle to drive up onto the sidewalk and almost into a retaining wall. Everything was dinging the abs and other lights were on and the word stabilitac was displayed on the center dash. Thankfully no one was injured. I immediately called the dealership when I got home and took it in to have it looked at. The dealership had my truck for several days and offered no real explanation for what caused the problem other than it was a software problem. Now here we are a month later I'm driving down the interstate and take my exit for work. When I hit my breaks the lights go dim in the truck, the radio goes out, the abs and other indicator lights come on, things are dinging and stabilitrac is displayed on the screen on the dash. When I started into my turn the wheel jerked violently many times in the opposite direction of my turn causing the vehicle to go onto the shoulder of the off ramp. It took every bit of strength to keep the vehicle on the road. I reluctantly continued on to work as it happened a few more times. One of them I was able to capture on video. The vehicle is currently at the same dealership that made the first assessment and repair. I don't feel safe operating this vehicle even after the repair as it has been proven it can and will happen again. . Someone is going to get killed or seriously injured if gm doesn't fix it.
1. Average gas mileage between 10 to 12mpg on freeway which is nowhere near what was shown on the sticker. 2. Radio not working/locks up, constant system errors, and display screen going black or green at random. 3. Mylink system not working correctly, won't take voice commands & shows error messages on screen. The computer will completely lock up & become unresponsive until restart. 4. Navigation system screen turns solid grey & locks up at random. 5. Backup camera is coming on & the screen then turns black while at freeway speeds in drive, shows error messages. 6. Lane departure system not working/detecting driver¿s side lines on road when crossed. 7. Driver and passenger's front seats feel loose at mounting brackets while driving (rocks back and forth). 8. Heated/cooled seats not cooling. 9. Transmission not shifting correctly, misses gears on acceleration; constant slips & clunks¿ from powertrain while at road speed. 10. Transmission/torque converter won't disengage from engine properly when braking & pushes the truck under engine power, to a stop at random times. The ecm/tcm is having communication errors or problems causing hazardous conditions to present themselves at random unpredictable intervals to drivers. 11. Engine misses/stalls when making sharp turns at random: fails to accelerate when merging into oncoming freeway traffic or turning out of parking lots. Again, the ecm/tcm is having some sort of software communication error which is causing hazardous conditions to present themselves at random unpredictable intervals to drivers. Freeway merging with oncoming traffic or out of a parking lot into oncoming traffic without the ability to accelerate the vehicle is an extremely hazardous condition not only to the passengers of the unresponsive vehicle but to the passengers/drivers in the oncoming traffic. -truck just bought back by gm at our loss.
