The rack and pinion has gone out on my 2015 chevy 1500. Loud creaking noises can be heard from turning the wheel side to side. For a truck to be 4 years and with 40k miles and this to go bad is a real quality issue. Online I have found numerous reports of this issue.
I have taken my 2015 chevy silverado to the dealer 2 times and have a appountment for a third time. I was informed today its the rack and pinion ! seriously my truck has 35000 miles on it. Come on ! its under warranty but what happens when this happens again ? I am a mother of 6 I deoend in th is truck and if its happening at 35000 miles then what's going to happen at 100000.
When my truck was under factory warranty it had a ratcheting clunking noise coming from the rack and pinion. The truck had 89000 on it and I called Chevrolet filed a complaint. I was driving last summer and I lost my steering going down the road then I got it back. Then I took it in for the software update recall. The Chevrolet garage told me that the rack and pinion is not covered under factory warranty. Now the truck has 109000 and the rack is binding worse. I did my research and found out their is alot of people with the same problem I'm having. These racks need to be recalled before someone gets hurt.
I bought my truck brand new from Chevrolet. No accidents, well maintained truck. I have gone thru 2 rack and pinions and my truck just hit 32k miles. 1st time I noticed popping noises coming when I turned the steering wheel. Before I had a chance to take it to the service department the power steering completely went out. Just a couple days ago I noticed the popping noise again. I took it to the dealer today before my power steering would fail. Again the diagnosed it as the rack and pinion and is back in the shop.
Original complaint # 11011865, so I brought my 2015 silverado back to michaels Chevrolet in fresno after they replaced my rack and pinion. The second rack had same issue after being on truck for three weeks. This time dealership refused to replace the rack. I noticed gm recalled over 800,000 2014 silverado recently. I have an early model 2015 silverado which I learned has the same rack and pinion as the 2014's. I asked the dealer if the recall could be effecting my truck as well. I was told they were unsure and it was possible, however they still refused to replace the rack under warranty. They told me it was as a result of my truck having a leveling kit. So now I can drive the vehicle due to it being unsafe. Last thing I want is to be driving down the road and lose all steering. What can I do and is there any laws that protect me from gm warranty problems???.
When turning steering wheel I hear a clunking/grinding noise. On 7/07/2017 I brought it in to michaels Chevrolet located in fresno, CA regarding the issue. I was told the issue was a result of a bad rack and pinion. They replaced the rack under warranty. Now three weeks later I'm having the exact same problem so obviously this new one is bad as well. The clunking/grinding noise is more pronounced when stationary and turning wheel right and left and while backing. You don't really hear it much while driving.
