Chevrolet Silverado 1500 owners have reported 34 problems related to cruise control (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Silverado 1500 based on all problems reported for the Silverado 1500.
While using cruise control on freeway at approx 70 mph when headed up hill and the vehicle reaches approx. 2500-3k tach, the cruise will disengage and speed will drop immediately with no warning. Dealer says manual states one may have to use throttle to maintain speed but does not mention cruise dropping off. This is an extreme safety risk when a vehicle is behind you accelerating on the same incline and you suddenly drop speed with no brake lights illuminating.
The contact owns a 2023 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed and attempting to complete a turn, due to the placement of the controls on the steering wheel, the contact unintentionally activated the cruise control. As a result, the vehicle quickly accelerated to the speed last set that had been stored in the memory, almost causing a collision with the vehicle ahead. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 200.

After using cruise control then braking -cruise control disengages as normal. Then proceeding to park at low speed and turning the steering wheel to park-it seems like cruise control engages and car accelerates. It only happen a few times -5 so far- only has about 9000 miles. Applying brake disengages the problem. No incidents occurred, but could cause serious problem.
The contact owns a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving with the cruise control activated to 55 mph but recorded going 6-8 mph above the cruise control setting. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was taken to local dealer cantu Chevrolet sales & service (805 e riley st, freer, TX 78357 (800) 741-1494) where it was diagnosed with "needing a programmer to reprogram the speedometer". The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of failure and did not provide further assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.

I am left handed, and am most comfortable driving with my left hand at the 9 to 10 o'clock position. The chevy truck I just purchased has the cruise control settings to the left side of the horn on the steering wheel. Their is a protruding "thumb joystick" which is used to set the speed up or down by using your thumb or finger. Multiple times now my hand has accidently swiped this "joystick" while driving along a 30 to 35 mph public street and this turns on and engauges the speed control at the last saved set speed. Usually 65 to 70mph highway speed. The vehicle will then start to accelerate very quickly and if your reflexes aren't what they used to be, well 2+2.

I was driving on the interstate with cruise control set, and whenever I would signal left to merge into the other lane, the cruise would disengage. I could reset it as usual immediately afterwards, but it had done this before, so I tested multiple times and received the same response almost every time. The dash lights would flicker, as well as mylink window in center console area. It would also go nuts if I rolled up the window and hold a second past the time window was completely up. I had multiple lights within dash light up, then go off (really scary). Happened too fast to tell what lights lit up. Additionally, my power steering went out as I was slowly turning into driveway of my friend's house. He even commented it looked like I was having trouble with the turn, so it wasn't just my imagination. This episode has happened several times before, almost as if the engine had died (but it had not done so). I have read where this was a recall on other models of chevy trucks, but found no recall information on my VIN. All I know is that if my electronics and/or my steering go out while going down the road and I wreck, gm will have major legal issues on their hands. I have been a lifelong chevy owner and always keep my vehicles in tip-top shape. Therefore, this is a manufacturer's issue that needs resolved before lives are lost.
I was traveling south on i65 in tennessee, with the cruise control set at 76mph. I was near mile marker 27 on a steep incline when a car moved in front of me causing me to tap the brake to come off cruise control and slow down. When the car merged right, clearing my path, I touched the resume button to reach-engage the cruise control. I immediately felt the overdrive kick in, which seemed normal because I was going up hill, but it just went crazy. The engine raced to nearly 5000rpm, and I was going over 100mph with no ability to stop it. I turned off the cruise control using the steering wheel button, and it had no affect. I stepped on the brake, it had no affect. So I moved to the shoulder to avoid traffic, and I stepped on the brake harder. I saw the speedometer react, so I pressed the brake as hard as possible and managed to get it stopped and in park. The engine was still screaming at nearly 5000rpm, so I turned the key off. After 30 minutes, I started it, it ran fine, and I was able to complete my drive to pensacola without further incident. A truly terrifying experience. Thank you.
1 owner. Never driven on salted roads(south louisiana). Live 100 miles from coastline, not in a saltwater environment. Or driven in water other than rain. Cruise control dropping out, automatic transmission not shifting when supposed to. Traction control dropping out, service messages cycling in and out--traction control, stabilitrac , anti-lock brakes, check engine light, red brake light comes on and off. Speedometer going crazy. Brought vehicle to gm dealer for inspection/repair. Cause- internal failure of ecbm-electronic brake control module, due to corrosion in the connector due to water intrusion. Had to replace the module, and the vehicle chassis wiring harness. Total repair was $1,830. 39 for parts and labor. The dealer reported to me that the design/installation location of this module is flawed, and a faulty design allowed moisture to get into the module thru the connector. Which also resulted in the wiring harness connections into the ecbm also becoming corroded. . Dealer also told me that this faulty design will eventually become a recall, and for me to keep my invoice of this repair, as to be able to claim a reimbursement for this repair.

Product safety recall 17276 loss of steering assist -- my truck is not involved in this recall, but I am having the exact issues described in the recall, sudden loss and return of eps assist. This happens at low speeds when turning or backing, both forward and reverse motions. I am also having issues with the cruise control shutting off intermittently when activating the turn indicator to change lanes. I understand that this may be related to this recall, as the electrical software issues can cause other electrical systems to become temporarily disabled, such as the radio, stabilitrack, dic, chimes, door-lock cycling, air conditioning, or cruise control. Also, when the turn indicator is activated and the cruise control shuts off, the dash lights also flicker. I have already had this truck in to the dealer once to fix this, and they refused to run the recall because my truck was not in the recall group. Instead they charged me over $1,000 to replace a steering wheel position sensor, which I now doubt was the problem since the issues with loss of steering and disabling of cruise control have returned. I just want this fixed.
The problem was not with the air bag, but the front switch that activates the air bags upon impact. When one or both fail the test when you turn the ignition on, it posts a message saying service the air bag system. There is lots of information regarding this on utube. Apparently this is a common problem. I am an electrician and an electronics tech, I know that the air bags will not activate if the crash is on the side with a bad air bag. I had 2 brake light switches go out, at which time the person behind me,would have no idea, I was braking. The switch is a 2 part switch, one part controls the brake light, the other enables or disengages the cruise control system.

Rapid temporary loss of engine power, doorlocks cycling repeatedly, guages malfunctioning, radio shuts off and turns back on with no preset stations and showing 12:00 on the clock ,cruise control disengages. Once vehicle is shut off, no guages nor lights work. . . As if there wasn't any battery in the vehicle. Vehicle won't start until dome light is restored on via jumpstarting. Cleaning battery connections and numerous ground wire connections gives short-lived relief from symtoms but problems ultimately return. Chevy dealership diagnosis shows that ground wires have high resistance. Online research shows that tens of thousands of other chevy owners are having similar to exact same problems, yet no recall has been issued. Problem was "fixed" last year and has returned yet again.
Steer assist and stabilitrak errorr messages. Says to service. My a/c unit is also affected by this. It appears that it may have been part of the recall #17276 but according to the dealer our VIN did not pull it up. The vehicle pulls and steering becomes difficult. A/c unit blows out hot air. When in cruise control sometimes the vehicle accelerates on its own and the rpms shoot up. Have to break and decrease speed for problem to be resolved before resetting cruise control.
While driving with cruise control engaged and a signal light is used , cruise is disengaged or if the windows are rolled up or down then cruise will be disengaged. This action will also cause the instrument cluster to dim when the signal is used or windows rolled up or down. If I turn the vehicle off and restart the vehicle it will clear up and may go another hour before it does it again. This is getting progressively worse and sometimes flashes a warning in the drivers information center, stabilitrak disabled and steering assist disabled drive with caution. Again if I turn the vehicle off and restart it it will work just fine for a while. This does seem to happen more when I have driven the vehicle for at least one hour. This started happening approx 6 months ago with cruise being disengaged and the dash lights dimming while using the signal lights or the window switch. The stabilitrak and steering warnings started 03/19/2017. On 03/20/2017 I had driven the vehicle about 2 miles and was pulling into a parking spot at a low speed when the steering wheel was ripped from my hands. The last incident was on April 8th while pulling a trailer with the tow haul mode engaged. I was attempting to pass a vehicle and kicked the vehicle into passing gear when the stabilitrak and steering warning both came on .
One night on the way home from work, I was driving 60mph and all of the sudden my truck hydroplaned. I managed to get the truck straight and regain control of the vehicle. About a week later, as I'm heading home all of the sudden my abs, brake, and traction control lights all illuminated. The dic reads service stabilitrak and service traction control, then it will display stabilitrak off and traction control off. I had the codes read and my trouble code was p069e - fuel pump control module requested mil illumination and u0073 - control module communication bus a off. All those lights mentioned above have been on for about a month. I looked up information about the fpcm and found out about gm recall 14515, I entered my VIN but the only recall that came up was for the takata airbag recall. As I read through the 14515 recall, I feel my truck is affected by it because, while driving the truck my speedometer jumps all around and is not stable. Also, when I try to accelerate, it feels like the engine stalls and there's no power there. Other times, it will down shift to increase rpms, but then soon shift gears into a higher gear then shift back into a low gear and repeat this until I let off the pedal. My tow haul mode will not stay engaged, cruise control will not stay engaged, and most of the time my truck won't even start when trying to use the remote start, instead lights just flash as I'm holding down the start button on the key fob. The truck feels really sluggish almost like there's no power, it seems like it hunts for the right gears while driving. Overall it just feels unsafe to drive.
This failure has occurred quite a few times. Driving home then turning left the steering wheel locked up and shook violently back and forth. I almost hit a car in the opposite lane due to the loss of vehicle control. When this happened the lights on the dash, radio, ac fan all flickered and suddenly the truck shut off. I turned it back on and drove with similar issues and warning lights on the dash telling me the steering assist is off and service stabilitrac. When I pushed the window control up with the window shut the same thing happened again shutting the cruise control off when I used the turn signal. I'm worried about my family's safety the dealership said they couldn't duplicate and can't "find the fault code" which I find ridiculous with electronic technology controlling everything. They should be able to fix this serious safety problem.
At about 90,000 miles the cruise control stopped working and when it is warm outside the passenger's side door electrical lock will not work. It tries to push lock to unlock position, but only pushes it half way. I have read a lot about these concerns on this model vehicle. Is this 2 recalls? it should be. This is not a cheap fix.

A condition exists where, after the driver has used the gas pedal to accelerate, then has removed their foot from the pedal, then presses the cruise "set" button a brief moment later, and then immediately attempts to decelerate by repeatedly pressing minus "-" on the cruise control, that the speed control becomes confused and displays multiple different speeds, while maintaining the original speed, even though the driver believes they are decelerating. This can be reproduced on any 2016 silverado model by following these steps: throttle up and accelerate (to pass, for example), remove foot from accelerator, then immediately press the "set" button, followed by 5-10 presses on the decelerate "-" button; the speed will set at 65, for example, then flip between 64, 65, 63, 65, 62, 65, 61, 65, 60, 65, and so on, maintaining speed at 65 even though the driver is instructing the vehicle to decelerate. It may take 5-10 seconds for the speed control to clear allowing the driver to make changes, however they will still be cruising at 65. During this period, the driver does not realize that they are not decelerating at which point they may tap the brakes to disengage cruise, but have lost 5-10 seconds of time. This has presented a dangerous condition where the driver believes they're decelerating when too quickly approaching another vehicle, risking collision.

A reproducible condition exists when the driver removes their foot from the gas pedal, then quickly engages cruise control, then pushes the minus (-) button repeatedly to decelerate the cruise control, that the vehicle cruise locks up and flips back and forth between the desired speed and the original set speed, and does not decelerate. This can occur for several seconds, where the driver believes they are decelerating the cruise control but it is locked at its original setting, which could lead to an accident.

I have a2008 silverado like new the electrical system is giving me a hard time I replace the alternator, battery, headlight and still have thisissue headlight dimming at night time, cruise control not working properly ! I wish gm can help me.
After passing two cars at high speed with accelerator floored pedal was stuck to floor. Tried to pull it up with foot, could not, vehicle kept accelerating past 100mph. Had ride brake until speed was slowed enough to put in neutral and shut off and coast to stop. Cruise control was engaged at the time. After putting in park and starting all was fine. Dealer kept truck for a few a days and found nothing wrong. Mentioned floor mat which was ridiculous.

Cruise control stopped working, will not power on.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The contact stated that while the cruise control was set to 75 mph, the vehicle independently decelerated to 25 mph. The vehicle became resistant to acceleration attempts, and the reduce speed and the traction control warning lights were illuminated. The failure was experienced numerous times. A local mechanic performed a diagnostic which located the failure at the throttle body. The throttle body was replaced however the failure was not corrected. The vehicle continued to lose acceleration with or without the cruise control set. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 58,000.

2008 Chevrolet silverado. Consumer writes in regards to recall notice 16v-381 replacement parts and states dealership found bad connection in airbag wiring located behind seat. The consumer stated the air bag light illuminated on June 13, 2012. Also, the cruise control and passenger door lock did not work.
Speed control (cruise) does not hold. While going down an incline from the mountains, cruise control was set for 65 mph, and the vehicle increased speed to 85+ mpg before applying brake to slow down. Called dealership and took vehicle to be checked in regards to this incident, and they stated that due to the department of transportation, new emission standards that transmission was made not to hold so as not to increase carbon footprint. This causes a very unsafe condition when driving when the cruise control is engaged.
Driving 59 mph with cruise control on. Accelerated hard to pass a truck. Accelerator stuck open and could not stop it. Had to hit brakes three times, each time increasingly harder, until acceleration stopped and truck started to slow. Had accelerated to over 80 mph.
The contact owns a 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving approximately 20-35 mph, the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact applied the brakes and shifted into neutral. The failure recurred three times and the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The dealer advised that the contact has possibly engaged the cruise control haphazardly, causing the failure. The dealer neither inspected the vehicle nor performed a diagnostic test. The failure persisted and also, the vehicle would exhibit a delay in decelerate for at least four seconds after disengaging the brakes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer a second time yet the contact was advised that the failure was normal for the vehicle and was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 6,000.
I have a 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The cruise contol does not slow down the vehicle on grades or ever small slopes. The vehicle free rolls as fast as you will let it in over drive, 3rd gear, 1st or 2nd. There is no engine breaking at all. Gm says this is proper operation for the vehicle, and there is no software or mechanical fix for this problem. I have a 2004 of the same model and it works perfectly, with very effective speed control. This is very unsafe, and actually in my opinion cannot be considered to be cruise control at all. My dealership told me this is an ongoing complaint, that gm will not acknowledge as a definite defect in design. The same day my vehicle was being examined, the local police had one of their trucks of the same model year in the shop with the same complaint. I have not had an accident, but cannot use this option on the vehicle, I can only ride my breaks down slopes to slow the vehicle down.
The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. While driving at any speed with the cruise control engaged, the vehicle began to decelerate and the cruise control independently deactivated. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 37,000 and the current was 37,300. Updated 08/12/10 updated 08/17/10.
The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. When the cruise control is activated, the vehicle accelerates to a high speed. In addition, the rpm's increase and the contact loses control of the vehicle. The failure has been occurring since the vehicle was purchased in April of 2008. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and was informed that there was no failure with the vehicle speed control. The failure mileage was 52,000.

I own a 2003 silverado LS half ton pick up truck. This past weekend, I was returning from ft. Worth, TX and had my cruise control set on 67mph. I was stopped and told that I was clocked at 85mph. After much argument, the officer allowed me to leave, and the speedometer would not work at all. Apparently, while the cruise control was set at 67, the speed had crept up to 85mph. I did not drive my truck Sunday or Monday, but when I left to take it to the shop Tuesday morning, the speedometer was working fine. My mechanic checked for any codes and it turned up an ip code whatever that may be. Considering it would cost about $600. 00 dollars to have something replaced that is now working, I elected to keep an eye on it. My question is, how can I trust this now? this can be quite expensive if I am issued a citation, but more than anything else, it is a safety problem. Someone can unknowingly be going that fast is a very big liability to your company and to my life. If this is a recurring problem, these ip modules need to be recalled, they are a hazard.

Our new 2006 Chevrolet ck1500 4x4 extended cab pick up truck has a cruise control defect that Chevrolet dismisses as normal. When you are driving using the cruise control and start up a hill the truck slows down at least 10 miles an hour then suddenly without warning the cruise control system jolts the truck forward trying to compensate for the loss of speed. This is startling to say the least. It has happened to us going up hills and around hilly curves. If I did not keep both hands on the wheel I very well could have lost control and crashed. I have met one other person who owns a Chevrolet SUV and he told me he has the same problem. He simply stated that he "just doesn't use the cruise control". I think Chevrolet is fudging the truth to tell me it is normal and has to do with gear ratios when I have had numerous vehicles which do not commit this activity. The dealer has been very helpful concerning this matter and I do not hold him to fault. I do believe that corporate gm has a stake in covering up a problem of this nature that could have devastating potential. Some one will lose control of a vehicle somewhere due to this occurrence and someone will lose their life.
