Instrument Panel problems of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 - part 1

The speedometer registers 120mph all the time when moving. Was fixed once under warrant. The dealer who fixed it is no longer in business. I purchased a extended warranty, never used it. The truck has 55,000 miles right now. Diesel. $43,000 new. Chevy changed our onstar to digital. No onstar now.

I contacted Chevrolet and they will not honor the recall because the vehicle has 112,000 miles on it. I purchased the vehicle from enterprise leasing company 1 year ago when it had 101,000 miles on it. So I went to them for recourse and they too will not honor the recall because it has too many miles on it. I am appalled that this was not taken care of before I unsuspectingly bought the vehicle from a reputable company that should have made sure that it was in good working order before they sold it. At the very least no outstanding recalls. Now I'm stuck with a speeding ticket cost and the new dash cluster.

We have a 2004 chevy Silverado 2500hd. We bought the vehicle with 45k miles on it. Not long after, the speedometer started acting up. I turned the truck off, restarted and the speedometer was fine. We now have 100k miles on the truck and the speedometer reads 120mph all the time. This has clearly been a huge problem with chevy, but yet they aren't taking responsibility for the problem. The dealerships continue to make $500-$800 on each incident. We've called multiple dealerships and not one of them will cover it.

The gauge clust go nuts I will be doing 40 miles per hour then I look at my seed and it says 120 and gets stuck and no one wants fix it because there may be a recall on it so where is that recall or is it that it has to cause someone's life over it before something is done about it!!!.

Speedometer starting acting up by over registering my speed and now reads 120+mph no matter what my speed. It falls back to 50mph when I turn off the ignition.

Today driving home my cable was at 65 mph in a 40 stopping noticed that the speedometer cable would not go down went to local repair shop and told about the recall called chevy dealer and yes the same 70000 miles. When I purchased this vehicle it had more then 70,000 miles so I get penalized for the purchase ! looks like chevy should stick by there products and bring a recall for all the pickups !!.

Faulty speedometer on 2004 silverado. Problem started outside of normal warranty and finally completely failed outside of extended warranty through lawsuit. Just paid for it to be fixed at a cost of $525. Gm should have to pay for this.

Speedometer not working properly all the time. Can be doing 25 mph and all of the sudden speedometer goes to 60mph. It will not reset until I stop and turn truck off and on numerous times. Sometimes it will be pegged over 120 mph when on the highway and I am only doing 65mph.

I was driving, going about 55 mph, when I looked down at my speedometer and it showed that I was going about 135mph. Now, with the vehicle parked, with the key on, it still shows that I'm going 70 mph. The vehicle has only 34,600 miles on it, and gm says they will repair it free, up to 70,000 miles, which is fine, but they (gm) won't recall these trucks because its not a safety matter. If you are exiting an interstate highway with a sharp turn rated at 35mph and you don't have a working speedometer it could be tragic. Just check the internet about if there are recalls of these trucks will show this problem is widespread. Thanks.

Speedometer quit working.

Speedometer and tachometer have fails at 35,000 miles in 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd.

Speedometer will change from a correct reading to a erroneous reading with no warning. If I turn on and off the vehicle, the speedometer will reset back 5 mph each time I do this until rest to 0mph at a stand still. It will then correctly operate for varying amounts of time (50 - 500 miles) before it goes haywire again. Gm acknowledges that this is a known problem and has a policy in place to repair at no cost if vehicle is 7 years old or less and less than 70,000 miles. My problem is that my vehicle is a 2004 with now 144,000 miles on it and gm will do nothing. Initially I contacted them on my own and was declined. After I sent a letter to the attorney general's office in mn, gm contacted me and for a second time denied helping correct this problem. I'm contacting you at the direction of the mn attorney generals office. Bottomline is that the speedometer is not a convenience feature but a necessary feature required to safely operate the vehicle. Gm acknowledges that it is enough of an issue that they have a policy to repair outside of factory warranty however feel that my 3 1/2 year old $50,000 vehicle is precluded from the same consideration of a vehicle with less than 70,000 miles on it. Dealers I have spoke to tell me that this problem is so common that they repair these daily.

Intermittent and erroneous operation of the speedometer in my 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 diesel truck. The speedometer frequently indicates the wrong speeds, at time over +100mph. At other times, indicates speeds less than actual or freezes altogether. Gm refuses to acknowledge issue or offer to repair. This is a serious safety issue and can result in driving at speeds above or below posted limits.

The dealer estimates the cost to fix this defect at approx $450. 00 I now have approx 105,000 miles and continue to drive without a working speedometer. This vehicle and many with this same defect is used for towing. Gm has put profit ahead of safety and customer satisfaction. The ntsb has continued to allow thousands of vehicles to operate unsafely with this well known and documented defect by failing to force gm to recall these vehicles many of which were still being manufacture after the defect was discovered.

Speedometer reads improperly. You look down and your going 110 this makes you want to slam on your brakes. How safe would that be on a interstate?.

Tachometer & speedometer failure at low temperatures.

2004 Silverado 2500 hd abs kicks in at slow speeds. Now abs light and brake light are always on and I get dinging sound from warning system with message service brake system.

Speedometer and tachometer have both failed. With the key off it reads 4200rpm and over 120mph chevy knows of this problem and wont cover it because I have over 70,000 miles. But they know the problem is there and I would think not knowing your speed is a safety issue. It will cost me over $400. 00 to fix this and I think chevy should be responsible for this cost.

The speedometer in my 2004 silverado has started to malfunction. It does not show the speed of the truck on any consistent basis. It will start out at 30 mph and increase correctly then reset it self 60 mph andthe lowest point. It is dangerous. I researched several online discussion boards and there are many complaints out there. My dealership wants $600 dollars to replace the instrument cluster and the truck will not be drivable for at least a week while a new cluster is programmed with my mileage at the factory. This lends itself to many people not wanting to get the cluster fixed and leading to safety issues.

Speedometer stopped working properly . I have several tickets for speeding now. I had it checked at 50,000 miles and could not afford to fix it. I now have 80,000 miles and chevy won't replace my instrument panel. I feel this is a safety issue. I also had to replace the front hub assembly already.

I own a 04 Chevrolet 2500 hd. A couple of months ago my speedometer got stuck on 10 mph when I was stopped. To this day it is still no working properly showing any where from 20-40 mph when I'm stopped. This results in inaccurate readings while driving. The problem still exists today.

The speedometer on my 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd is not working properly. When the truck is turned off the speedometer reads 90 mph, and when traveling through my neighborhood it reads 120 mph. I have found this to be a very common problem on all late model gm vehicles. This is unsafe and gm should be made to repair this problem.
