While driving at highway speed in my 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500 duramax, the transmission suddenly failed and locked up without warning. This caused an immediate loss of vehicle function and created a dangerous situation while traveling in traffic. I had my two children in the vehicle at the time. I was able to safely maneuver the truck to the shoulder, but the vehicle was no longer operable and required towing. This failure occurred only a few months after a transmission replacement and follows prior transmission repairs, including a valve body replacement performed by a gm dealership. This is a repeat transmission failure and presented a serious safety risk due to the sudden nature of the failure at highway speed.

Nhtsa vehicle safety complaint I am reporting a serious transmission defect in my 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 3500hd lt that creates a high risk of sudden power loss, erratic shifting, or loss of control while driving. Once warm (during normal driving), it fails to upshift properly in gears 5-8: holds lower gears, causes high rpms (3,000+), delays shifts excessively, or refuses to shift. This is a supplemental update to complaint #xxx filed February 7, 2026, regarding my 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500hd diesel (VIN: [xxx] ). The vehicle experienced a sudden and complete loss of propulsion on January 21, 2026, consistent with the defect mechanism described in recall 24v797. Recall software was installed may 27, 2025. Failure occurred eight months later with no warning. Gm's response has been as follows: a field technical service engineer made a remote determination that the failure did not match the recall without physically inspecting the transmission. Gm executive resolution required teardown at customer expense with no reimbursement guarantee. The authorized dealership (dave kirk Chevrolet, crossville TN) declined to perform a documented inspection -- citing unwillingness, not inability. Written refusal was withheld for over one week. Gm's executive resolution liaison admitted she had known of the refusal and withheld that information from me, directly delaying my ability to act. The final repair order (ro 50479) contains a self-documented notation: "added tech notes 3/16/26" -- eight weeks after the January inspection. The transmission pan was fully removed, fluid was discarded, and pan bolts were not reinstalled. The only photograph provided does not reflect as-found conditions. The vehicle experienced a sudden loss of propulsion while driving at highway speed after normal operation. The transmission began slipping and then would no longer engage gears. The vehicle had to be pulled over and towed. This vehicle is subject to gm recall n242454440 related to a known transmission control valve defect that can cause loss of propulsion. I was not notified of this recall by gm and discovered it independently. Once aware, I completed the recall software update. After the failure, the dealer documented pressure control fault codes (p0746 and p0798), burnt transmission fluid, and internal debris, and recommended full transmission replacement. I requested that gm evaluate whether this failure is related to the known defect addressed by the recall and special coverage n242454441. Gm acknowledged my escalation request but did not schedule an inspection, did not contact the dealer, and closed the case without performing a causation review. The vehicle remains disabled, no technical inspection has occurred, and I am incurring rental costs. I am reporting this as a safety-related failure and recall handling concern.

The vehicle was driven to a job site in gowanda NY. The computer indicated it neede to clean the exhaust filter. The truck was parked in an open area on a blacktop parking area. The truck finished a regen approximately 30 minutes later. The vehicle was shut down and left unattended. Approx 30 minutes later, the driver, heard noises, came around a structure and saw the vehicle was on fire. The driver did attempt to use a fire extinguisher to no avail. They then called 911 and the fire department was dispatched. The department put out the fire but the vehicle is a total loss. As this was a work site, the vehicle was towed to our shop and stored inside. The inland marine insurance company hired a fire investigator, and they looked at the vehicle. They determined the fire originated on the lower firewall in the engine compartment. He paused his investigation, to await a representative of gm to be present for destructive analysis to determine exact cause. The gm case number is xxx. The engine oil cooler failed causing engine oil to leak into the coolant system on my 2024 chevy Silverado 3500hd. This requires a full replacement of the coolant system. In addition, excessive sludge buildup inside the motor is caused. This is a known issue with gm for 2024 diesel vehicles. Gm has released a service bulletin but is fighting my local dealership on the required repairs.

This vehicle was purchased with 10,000 miles from a Chevrolet dealer. At 13,000 miles the transmission started making an awful noise. Up a service check it was found that the transmission pump was failing.

Vehicle was making a very loud humming noise at 73 mph. After returning to the dealership they found that the bearings in the rear end house had destroyed themselves causing internal damage to the housing and the entire rear end now needs to be replaced.

On [xxx], while driving ~65 mph, my 2020 Chevrolet silverado 2500hd duramax experienced a sudden transmission lock-up, nearly causing a crash. The event caused severe internal transmission damage, leaving the truck unsafe and inoperable. This is the exact defect described in NHTSA recall #24v-797 (gm recall n242454440), which states that valve body wear can cause rear-wheel lock-up. My truck stored p0700 and p2820, which directly indicate a valve body failure. Gm refuses to repair my vehicle under special coverage n242454441 (15 years/150,000 miles) because code p0747 did not set, even though my failure clearly matches the defect. I requested a hydraulic valve body leak test, the only way to confirm the defect, but the dealer refused, saying they only scan codes. Gm must perform this test at no cost, as required by federal recall laws. Gm’s denial leaves a known safety defect unrepaired, violating federal recall obligations and putting drivers at risk. I was driving on the interstate at around 65mph. Towing my fifth wheel. Transmission started shifting hard with a loud bang that sounded like we hit a huge pothole. A message popped up in the screen indicating “reduced acceleration, drive with caution”. The transmission seems to be stuck in gear as we exited the highway. Check engine light was on. Came to a stop at a stop sign and barely had enough power to pull into a parking lot. We had the truck towed to a nearby dealership. Fault codes p0700 and p0747 were present. Service advisor said valve body would have to be rebuilt. It’s been 2 weeks and the valve body cover plate is still “backordered” with no estimated in stock date.

At approximately 35,126 miles the oil cooler cracked and flooded my engine cooling system with over 2. 5 gallons of oil causing catastrophic engine failure.

Driving on highway at 40mph while towing a trailer the rear tires briefly locked up, then the check engine light came on and vehicle went into limp mode. Dealer confirmed transmission valve body issue. Same problem as recalled on earlier model year vehicles. Seems like 2023-2025 vehicles should be added to the original recall to ensure support and long-term warranty protection.

10-speed automatic transmission valve body failure at 41k parts are unavailable nor are replacement transmissions. Dealership says 3 months.

Transmission shifting hard while pulling lawn trailer. Truck goes into limp mode, exhaust brake shuts off, and check engine light comes on p0747. Dealer said bad valve body which could have damaged transmission. No parts in sight. Known gm issue bot my 2023 3500hd is not covered in recall????.

Reduced power transmission module defective.

Transmission unexpectedly down shifted hard. Vehicle had to be towed- high rpm/low speed/high transmission temps. Dealer stated this is a known problem with this transmission - control valve body. Transmission down shifted hard causing rear tires to chirp. Force on down shift was intense at 25mph. It was so intense my wife and I thought our vehicle was rear-ended. This is a huge safety issue. This could have been tragic if I was traveling at higher speeds or towing my 5th wheel trailer. Per dealer - this is a known transmission issue with gm/Chevrolet. No replacement parts are available. My vehicle has been sitting at the dealership for five weeks now. There were no warning lamps, messages or other symptoms prior to failure. To side on caution, gm/Chevrolet needs to recall these vehicles before someone gets seriously hurt and/or killed. I'm told gm/Chevrolet/allison replaced metal balls with plastic balls in this valve control body and heat is shrinking the plastic balls causing the problem.

Rear wheel lockup: while driving down the highway pulling a loaded trailer the rear wheels locked up, gm has an open recall on 2020-2022 models but denies its an issue with the 2024 model, my dealership pushed a “software update” but that does not fix the faulty transmission valve body issue, it just overrides the safety features that were designed to protect the transmission. I have a video of it occurring while slowing down for a stop sign when it did it the second time to me.

The valve body failed on my transmission. My safety was impacted because as I was towing my 40 foot camper and my vehicle went into limp mode on the freeway at 70 miles an hour and I could only go 45 with four children in the vehicle. Yes the problem has been confirmed by a local dealership. There was a check engine light present, but eventually it went away and the truck returned to normal. This has happened one time before as well.

Vehicle went into limp mode (max 3rd gear and about 45mph) while entering the interstate pulling a 30' 5th wheel camper. Luckily was in a construction zone so the speed limits was posted at 55 so no one took me out. Got off the next offramp and took vehicle to chevy dealership and they said a control solenoid valve body in the transmission failed. All parts on nationwide backorder with no approximation of updated part. Looked into this online and it looks like it's been an issue for 4 years plus.

This is regarding 24v797. A software update to "monitor" for transmission valve failure is not a resolution to a problem that could pose a sever risk to my safety on a very expensive truck.

I recieved a recall notice for this vehicle. When I went to my local dealership {michael hohl GMC carson city nevada} I was told that I would be better off to wait until my transmission fails because the repair parts are almost non existant. I am now reluctant to drive my $90,000 truck because of an inevitable rear wheel lockup situation.

The vehicle was towed back to the residence where it was informed that the recall remedy was not available and no interim repair. The contact mentioned that the failure mileage for the most recent failure was 28,000 with the new transmission. 2nd time I’ve had to replace def heater and tank. Truck goes into limp mode and limits the speed leaving a person stranded.

The contact was informed that the torque converter was wobbling, and the crankshaft bearings were shot. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who determined that the oil filter had metal shavings inside. They removed the oil pan and noticed the crankshaft had broken in half. Torque converter failed and destroyed my transmission. There is metal shavings in my transmission fluid. My truck will not shift right, the torque converter wants to lock up. It causes my truck to have a jerking type feeling.

Vehicle and many like it with the 10 speed transmission are having failing valve bodys which DE-rates the vehicle to stay in 5th gear by gm coding and limits speed to 50 mph. This part has a significant lead time while gm is rolling new trucks off the line with the part needed to rectify the issue of all the already purchased trucks and SUV's.

My 2022 chevy silverado has been to 4 different GMC/Chevrolet dealerships since August 2024 and is currently broken down in indiana at sauers Buick GMC although, it has been to 4 different dealerships to confirm there is a faulty part of the transmission, part # 24048701 a body control valve, I have been on the waiting list since August 2024 for this part at 4 different dealers ships some days it drives fine, and others it will flash a message that it is in reduced power mode and it will not shift properly at this point there is no parts available, so I have continued to drive my truck since I am making payments on it. It broke down and would not shift into gear on October 31, 2024 in indiana. At that point it flashed an error message that the transmission was hot. I called for a tow truck and had aaa tow it to the closes GMC dealer today is November 14, 2024, it has been at the same dealership for 2 weeks with no eta from the dealership or GMC corporate as to when it will be fixed. Since it has been undriveable for 2 weeks, what is my course of action? since the body control valve part # 24048701, is not available, I am seeking a full transmission replacement which I am also waiting for an answer on.

Dealership told me the throttle body failed in my transmission. I wanted it completely torn down to find the actual point of failure since it did represent the current recall on the truck that hadn't been done because the part isn't yet available. The transmission has been replaced for almost $10,000. 00.

Transmission lock up traveling 45 miles an hour while acceleration up modest uphill grade pulling a 3000 pound trailer. The lockup was severe enough to cause passengers to lunge forward with seatbelt engagement. There was no loss of control of the vehicle; however, we did stop the vehicle to inspect it with no damage observed. We expected to see some. This event would have caused a likely loss of control of the vehicle if the lockup was for longer duration. Vehicle also had prior hard shifts that are still occurring. These hard shifts usually occur in the lower gears with acceleration and deceleration. Vehicle was taken to the dealership with an explanation of the event. There were no codes. The dealer recommended a transmission fluid change to smooth the shifting. This seemed to decrease the frequency of the hard shifts but did not eliminate them. The vehicle has not been inspected by police, manufacture or insurance company. The dealer did not do a thorough transmission inspection. I suspect they knew of this problem at the time of the transmission fluid change due to the current recall: manufacturer recall numbern242454440 NHTSA recall number24v797.

July 20, we were driving the 2021 3500hd to church w/our single axle trailer w/mower on it when we were stopped at a yield sign and proceeded to pull forward, our truck made a loud boom noise and immediately stopped. Warning lights on the dash began coming on, when the gas pedal was pressed it made a loud rpm sound of engine revving, following by barely coasting action. We were able to drift into the turn lane & get out of danger. We had to be towed to capital Chevrolet bc something isn't functioning properly. Dealership said they believe it's transmission related and the power train warranty should cover repairs needed. We have tow receipt and gas receipts for rental vehicle.

Allison transmission valve body failure, going on 2 months backorder due to high demand for this part several others are experiencing long delays. Perhaps a recall will gets things moving.
