Tl- the contact's daughter owned a 2017 Chevrolet Sonic. The contact stated that while her daughter was driving at 25 mph, a fellow motorist had honked at her as she noticed flames forming from underneath the radio inside her vehicle. The contact's daughter initially attempted to extinguish the fire with a cup of water but to no avail. She was able to pull over and exit the vehicle and then called the authorities who arrived on the scene and extinguished the fire. A fire report was filed and no injuries were reported. Purchased my car in October of 2018. In July of 2019, my check engine light came on, followed shortly afterward by the temperature overheat gauge. Took my car in and was told that my thermostat needed replaced and that this is common with my make/model. Replaced the thermostat. In January 2020, check engine light came on again, with a po599 code. Took it to local auto shop to have it diagnosed; they said that the check engine light came on when starting the car, so likely wasn't an overheating issue. They thought it was the sensors/circuits. After running diagnostic check, again suggested replacing the thermostat. This is now the second time the thermostat has needed replaced in the year and three months that I have owned the vehicle. When at jiffy lube, I was told that they had seen at least four other Sonics come in with the same check engine code.

Vehicle felt like it was vibrating while in idle and when pressing down on the brakes. There was very low acceleration and it felt like my car was in neutral. I was driving on a city street going about 20-25 mph. The check engine light turned on. I took my car in and had to have the ignition coil and ignition boot replaced at 30,345 miles.

2012 Sonic has the same engine as the chevy cruze, the cruze has a recall on it for the engine valve, yet the Sonic does not. My check engine light came on and I took it to get diagnosed and was told the engine valve needs replaced. Called the dealership and there are on outstanding recalls on my vehicle. I don't want to pay to get it fixed when the same engine on the cruze has the same issue.

I had a recall on a component of my catalytic converter that was causing it to move at a low efficiency. I took it in to moss brothers Chevrolet to be repaired. It seemed fine until 1-2 days later when the check engine light came back on. I called moss brothers to inform them of this situation, however, they told me that if I wanted to get it diagnosed and the problem is not covered under warranty, I would have to pay the diagnostic fees. However, I did not have any other issues with my car before taking it to them. It wasn't until afterwards. So if something other than the recall is wrong, I would be willing to bet that it was due to negligence on their part. I took it into autozone to run a diagnostics and it said �catalyst system low efficiency� whatever they did, did not fix my car but only made it worse. I called GMC to see if there was a way around the fee should it be a different cause(if it is, I believe it was caused by moss brothers) and they were not helpful to me at all.

The contact stated that the valve cover gasket became defective, the check engine warning light persistently illuminated, and the turbo engine fin's were bent. The contact took the vehicle to two independent mechanics to have the vehicle diagnosed. The dealer nor the manufacturer had been notified of the failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. Attempted to start vehicle with key in ignition and also using the factory installed wireless remote starter while car was stationary however the car would not start initially. After another attempt or two the car did start. Also, on occasion after car does finally start, it immediately turns back off. Had car battery tested which that was not the issue. Took the vehicle to local mechanic and he found nothing wrong however while the car was sitting idle with the key in the ignition and turned off with no human interaction, the car attempted to start itself 3 different occasions. He recommended taking car to the chevy dealership and having them reprogram and inspect the remote starter connection/programming. Now the check engine light is on as a notification and the issue continues after mutiple days of repeat failed attempts to start whether from actual key or wireless remote start attempts. Whether vehicle was left inside garage or outside the issue is still the same, regardless of temperature.

Almost a year since engine last stalled without warning (happened 3 times in about 3 months). When pulling into traffic from a stop, heard 3 chimes and several warning lights lit up (traction control, engine power down, check engine, service car ASAP). Engine at low power, was able to drift into parking lot. Restarted car after several minutes, all lights except check engine went off. Check engine light went off after I put gas in the car the next day. I do not feel safe in this car. Long story short the dealer was going to work with me to take the car back, but bank would not release title (loan is very upside down) until another mechanic looked at the car. Bank wanted me to utilize my warranty program I had purchased with the car loan. Mechanic found p2138 app sensor code. Was leaning into the driver side on the floor to look under the dash and his elbow got wet. Found driver footwell completely soaked: carpet, liner, and carpet pad. Rest of the car was dry. Discovered the sunroof had been leaking down into the car and not draining out properly on driver's side. Could not check entire drain system without removing headliner. Found water had compromised the side air bag and wire harness; several connectors corroded. Sprayed water on wires and was able to replicate engine power loss. Confirmed that water was leaking into the vehicle onto the wire harness. Temporarily fixed the issue with dielectric grease to prevent connectors from getting wet. Mechanic left the panels off so I can monitor the sunroof leaking. I do not feel safe in the car because of the air bag being wet and may not deploy properly, the wet carpet pad which could cause rust and mold, and the corroded wire terminals. Will contact dealer and bank tomorrow. I am hoping they will take the car off my hands as it will be a few years til I can pay it off and I don't want an accident before then.

Air intake system. Not long after we bought the car the check engine light came on reading a code ph171. We were told it was a knock sensor which we replaced and it didn't fix the problem, after we were told it was the air intake hose, checked it and it looks like it's a new hose no issues with it. Now we are trying everything we can to figure out the problem. We check online forums and found out that this is a huge problem with this car and almost no one knows exactly what it is to fix it. When the car is driving it seems fine but as soon as you stop and it idles it seems like it wants to die and almost has a few times. And a scent of burning like a electrical short behind the dashboard. I am afraid that this vehicle could stall while I am on the road and cause me to be rear ended causing a serious crash.

Thermostat housing and water intake problem. The factory water intake is plastic and does not stand up to heat so it warps and starts leaking. It leaks more when the vehicle is running and under pressure but still drips when the vehicle is parked this causes the check engine light to come on. Went to the dealer they wanted $503 to put 2 gaskets in and would not guarentee what they said it was would fix the problem. I went on your web site and saw 18% of the Sonics sold have this problem. That is only the ones who have complained. I replaced the factory water intake with a metal one and it was good until the plug (which was installed by the manufacturer) on the underside started leaking.

Things started after my vehicle was repaired after a car hit me and took off. I noticed the check engine light came and stayed on, at certain times the car either while driving or while stopped the car will either shake for 2-3 minutes or also while stationary the traction system light will come on then turn off. I've also experienced issues with slow or not as responsive acceleration or unprompted rpg gauge revving and sometimes thats coupled with the shaking to the point that my has shut off while driving down a city street. I was never aware of any recalls so im not sure if it has anything to do with a possible recall that hasnt been diagnosed but theres great cause for concern. - I wasnt able to choose every affected part.

The car has been having intermittent reduced engine power since September 2016. The car was taken to the dealer, the check engine light never illuminated and no problem was diagnosed. During a recent trip the car began to have reduced engine power and surging. The check engine light illuminated. Trouble code p0171. The car was taken to the dealer who set an appointment. Check engine light turned off after a couple of days. On the way to the dealer the car almost died at a stop light. The problem was diagnosed as evap purge control solenoid.

When the car came to a complete stop at a stop light the engine was surging without application of the accelerator pedal. The check engine light came illuminated. We continued driving until about an hour later when the car was put in park in the driveway the engine surged until I shut it off. The check engine light remained illuminated and was taken to the local dealer the next day. The service advisor requested we bring it back the following Monday. The check engine light turned off while driving Saturday. During the drive back to the dealer for the Monday appointment and stopped at a stop light the engine rpm's dropped in half and ran rough for a few seconds. The rpm decrease and rough running has been a longer term issue that has been previously diagnosed with no resolution. I was advised based on current diagnosis that the evap purge control solenoid needs to be replaced.

When I press the gas pedal the rpms shoot up but car excelerates slowly. It jerks hard when switching to another gear and takes several minutes to finally get to a safe speed. Sometimes the car struggles to go uphill and hardly able to reverse. Dealership cleared my engine codes during my last oil change. Check engine light came back on a week later, autozone pulled 3 codes (p0700, p0300 and p0717). Changed my spark plugs, used lucas oil/5. 25 oz. Fuel treatment twice but still no change. Sometimes I can smell burning rubber. This problem makes it hard to safely merge onto highways and get through traffic lights fast enough. Now autozone has accidentally cleared my codes so I can't see if any of the above listed codes have been resolved.

This vehicle was very dangerous to drive and I have seen several complaints with same issue, vehicle is barely out of warranty and at 36000 miles but vehicle has less than 50k miles. I had to pay $350. 00 for this incident and Chevrolet will not cover it.
