Other Fuel System Pump problems of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. After inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the fuel pump was disabled and the odor of fuel was present. Also, the contact indicated that the fuel gauge displayed inaccurate fuel levels while operating the vehicle and the service engine sensor light had illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 05v155000 (fuel system, gasoline). The contact stated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 260,000.

Went to start my 2001 chevy Suburban and it wouldn't start. I listened for the fuel pump to engage and it wasn't working. I checked the relay and noticed it was melted on one corner. I have researched this online and found several complaints about the same problem. Also noticed that gm has done nothing to fix this issue. I have been a gm fan all my life and would like to continue being one. Please recall this on going problem gm.

The contact also stated that the brake warning light illuminated. On another occasion while driving at approximately 5 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the fuel pump needed to be replaced. The mechanic also stated that the anti lock brake system failed and unknown parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the anti lock brake system failure but the fuel pump was not replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign numbers: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and 05v155000 (fuel system, gasoline). The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

I have owned my 2001 chevy Suburban since January of 2008. I have replaced the fuel pump 3 times and today will be my 4th. I have spent thousands of dollars on the same part over and over. The last time it was replaced my mechanic advised us to keep at least 1/4 tank of gas in the tank which I have tried to do. But even doing this the fuel pump seems to go about every 15 months, just outside the warranty. Its ridiculous, there is no way I should be replacing fuel pumps at this rate.

I had my chev. Suburban 1500, yr. 2001 in for the 60,000 mi. Service and a new fuel filter was replaced according to the needs. I had problems right away with fuel being below 1/4 tank. It was stalling out. No low on fuel light came on, but the service engine soon light did. That was at 1/8 of a tank. It felt like I was going to run out of gas. I reported it immediately to the oil can henrey's were the service was preformed. They manager gave me a fuel additive. Didn't work. If I got to 1/4 tank it would do the same thing. It was recommended to me that I have a diagnostic check at the dealer. They replaced the filter and siad it was a defect. The problem is still present, it has been 7 months, 2 fuel filters, 2 sensors, and I still have a problem. I have to take it back again, and I took in the recall sheet that is still under investigation on my make and model. And also the last time I was not able to fill my whole tank. It would only take about 18 gal. And shut off. All the symptoms are what is discribed in your investigation. Please contact me.

Significant fuel leak from gas tank of 2001 Chevrolet Suburban. Will leak at approx. 1/2 gal per hour. Will leak when running at idle, running at speed, and stopped, engine off. Please take note - the vehicle would still run with the fuel tank leaking significantly. No error message was displayed in the vehicle message display. No fire occurred, but with close proximity to exhaust system, risk for fire would appear to be extreme. Delivered vehicle to dealer to inspect. Upon pressure test, dealer found leak at top of tank in pass-through connector. Leak was occurring because wire inside tank (fuel pump lead) melted, and created hole in pass through connector. Entire internal tank fuel pump and fuel level sender assembly replaced. Dealer technician reported he had seen this before, but usually the vehicle would not run, or a check engine light would be displayed. This vehicle would run, and did not display any message in the vehicle message display. Dealer would not acknowledge a recall in their systems or support a safety issue search. Gm would not acknowledge any recall or safety issue concern during calls placed on 5-13-2005. Gm service request was submitted by owner via phone - open service requst #1-335303835. Cost to repair was $996. 38us, all paid by owner. Owner (me) has all receipts and defective parts. Failed wire lead on internal pump is visibly melted. Cannot confirm replacement part (gm # 25315983) is not also defective, and may also lead to reoccurence of the same problem - melted wire, gas leak, potential fire or explosion.

2001 Chevrolet Suburban would not start after sitting approximately three hours after driving it a distance of approximately one mile. Vehicle had to be towed to local Chevrolet dealership after hours so the vehicle was not looked at for about two days. When I call ed the service writer to inquire about the vehicle he stated it was still parked outside. When I asked what the problem may be he stated, "probably the fuel pump. " the vehicle had not even been looked at by a mechanic when the initial diagnosis was made. It turned out to be a very expensive repair for a fuel pump replacement.

While driving on the interstate at 70 mph, the car suddenly died. Luckily we were going down a hill and no other cars nearby, so we coasted to the shoulder. Car would not crank - it was completely dead. It was towed to dealership. They said a fuse was blown which caused the problem. They did not know why the fuse was blown. They gave us several extra fuses in case it happened again. We were on our way home from vacation, so we took the extra fuses and finished the trip home. A couple days later the car would not crank. We took it to the local dealer, who found that the fuel pump was causing the fuse to blow. We had to pay over $800 to replace the fuel pump. We are hoping that gm will re-imburse us, since this sounds similar to the recall. They say that even though we've had to pay for the problem, we cannot file any paperwork until November. So it'll be at least until then before we get any money back, if at all. In the meantime, it sounds like the new fuel pump is susceptible to the same problem.

Fuel pump wires overheat when the weather is warm. As a result the vehicle becomes inoperative.

Per the dealer repairman the fuel pump/assembly above fuel tank "cracked" causing large loss of fuel directly under the vehicle. The car without warning would not start after being filled with gasoline. After several attempts to get the engine to turn over, I stepped out of the vehicle into a large fuel spill. I quickly removed 4 small children from their car seats and evacuated the vehicle. The fire department had to come to secure the area and prevent ignition of the fuel spill. This is a serious defect that needs to be addressed which luckily did not cause harm/loss of life.

Gasoline leaked from tank upon filling. I had vehicle serviced and dealer found that insulation had melted on wires on fuel pump internal to fuel tank. Was advised to keep at least 1/4 full to prevent the problem. Both the leak and melted wires imply a safety problem.
