4 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2024 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/13/2025

The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated upon brushing snow off the vehicle, the contact noticed that there was snow inside the headlights, which later turned into ice and dimmed the headlights. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the failure recurred, causing the contact to pull over to the side of the road to clean the headlights. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 360.

5 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2025 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/12/2025

New vehicle purchase, the dealer had installed a 3rd brake light that blinks 4 to 5 times when pressed. I'm concerned because according to what I've read a blinking brake light is against federal and state regulations.

6 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/23/2024

The headlight adjustment screw is broken. Was never used or adjusted and now the headlights point to the ground. Gm does not offer a replacement part for the adjustment screw, the only fix is to purchase a whole new headlight assembly which is roughly $1,000 before installation costs. This causes a dangerous situation since the drivers side headlight points to the ground and it is hard to see in front of you at night.

7 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 05/01/2024

The headlight adjuster failed. As a result, the headlight points straight down creating a safety issue at night. I have read online this is a common problem on Suburbans and tahoes. This happened on my car around 60k miles and only ~3 years.

8 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/15/2024

The headlamps are defective and unexpectedly break causing them to aim basically straight down towards the pavement making it unsafe to drive at night. In February of this year I took the vehicle to cox Chevrolet in bradenton and they said the headlamps would need to be replaced and it would cost several thousand dollars. I rarely need to drive at night and have been taking our son's car since then. There is a chance one broke and I didn't notice at first then the second one but, at this point, it is unsafe to drive the vehicle at night. I have found several posts on online forums where owners of other gm/Chevrolet vehicles with the same headlamps have had the same experience. Some have mentioned that an adjuster pin breaks and is not repairable (which I have confirmed with a service advisor at another Chevrolet dealership). I am [xxx] who drives responsibly (I. E. Not going off road in my Suburban) so having an issue like this is of concern as it makes the vehicle suddenly unsafe to drive at night. This is not a defect that is noticeable during the day so anyone purchasing a used vehicle with this problem wouldn't know they essentially don't have headlamps (I can see maybe 10 feet in front of the car) until they get on the road at nighttime. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

9 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/04/2024

*from day one of purchase there is a random, frequent loud buzzing/whining through the speakers(with our without the radio on). Dealership had no idea how to fix and Chevrolet said there was no known issue, so no help. Running lights constantly short out. We continually replace them and they short out again! have replaced all four door handles! cheap chrome plastic is not going to hold up. These should actually be metal to insure holding up! tires seem too big since they rub the fender well if you cut sharply to either side. You can actually hear them rubbing on the well as you cut hard to either side! dash cracked about five years after we purchased it. We kept it under our carport and this cracking was unacceptable! I called Chevrolet and they said there was no known issue or recall. We continued to ask our dealership to look for recalls on this. *there was a recall on our passenger side airbag. We tried to get it replaced and were told, no they could not. Takata went bankrupt, so sorry, Chevrolet will not replace air bag for you! *after a few years of not being able to use our front seat due to safety issues Chevrolet would not fix(defective airbag), we decided to save and get the airbag and cracked dash replaced on our own. Unacceptable! proclaimed recalls should be tended to by manufacturer! cruise control just stopped working one day early on, no recall--not surprised:( fuel tank is cutting off at the pump as we try to put gas into the tank. This is problematic as the vehicle will not run without fuel! currently fighting with this and contacting dealership to see if they can help at all. Everyone we know who has a Suburban or tahoe has these same problems! these are all widespread problems/design flaws. Please look into these issues to make a better product!.

10 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2023 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/21/2023

While driving on the highway at night during rainy conditions the wipers stopped in the up position, and at the same time, the headlights turned off. After a few seconds they resumed normal operation. My headlights were in the auto position and my wipers were also in the automatic setting. Being as that I was on a highway at night, in the rain, and going approximately 65mph surrounded by traffic, this was an extremely dangerous situation to be in. Without headlights and windshield wipers, my windshield was immediately obstructed and I was unable to see the road without headlights. More so, other traffic might have had trouble seeing my vehicle. This problem has not been replicated by myself or a dealer. It has been random in nature. When the incident happened, there were no warning lights on the gauge cluster or anything else inside the vehicle that seemed to be affected.

11 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2021 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 10/16/2023

While night driving driver noticed the driver side headlight completly pointing down providing no visibility. Vehicle was brought into gm dealership where is was discovered the driver led headlight adjuster screw broken causing a safety issue, where the light beam pointed down. Vehicle light assembly is currently being inspected for replacement under manufacture warranty under 36,000 miles.

12 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/01/2023

Stopped at a stop sign. The vehicle suddenly lost all electrical power. Lights began flashing. Traction control system turned off and on. Then it went back to normal driving. I just had the chassis control module recall taken care of as well. The air conditioning is intermittently cutting its ability to cool then suddenly cooling again during this time. When the vehicle turned back on, the strong odor of fuel was present from the air vents. I had reported the issue before but was told by a dealer there is nothing wrong they could see beyond a visual inspection.

13 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/01/2022

Started with driver side heated seat randomly turning on and off. Going from high, medium, low. No way to turn it off just comes back on. Can hear clicking coming from under dash. Lift gate wiring that goes into body, ground wire burnt. (replaced) but ground wire has power. (wiring issue) so rear wiper doesn’t work. “reading” lamps only work when door is open. After replacing life gate connector, says lift gate open. Started the repair, which leads to more wiring issues! needs a recall! unsafe.

14 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/24/2022

Headlight assembly leaks and retains significant amounts of water resembling a half filled fish tank. This causes the bulbs to burn out or corrode the light power supply leaving you with no headlights! this is a very common problem across many gm platforms. I am surprised the government regulators have allowed a safety problem this wide spread and known to continue unaddressed.

15 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/15/2021

We had the 2006 Suburban parked with the engine running while our family was just starting to get in. A couple of them noticed a slight smoke smell which we followed and we trailed it to the rear of the vehicle. While I was pulling off a left rear column trim piece to locate where the smoke was coming from, the far rear dome light fixture started dripping melted and burning plastic close by my head. I looked up and saw the rear dome light fixture on fire and flicked it down into the rear cargo area. One of the family was already fetching a fire extinguisher and as they arrived I used it to put out what fire was left in the headliner.

17 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/07/2021

Driving today in snow, increased electrical demand on vehicle while accelerating. Smelled burning wires and all dash lights flickered then died. Engine turned off and had to be restarted with the push button. Happened within 30 minutes later while accelerating onto a main road with traffic, lost control of vehicle and had to force the steering wheel to turn the vehicle off the road to avoid being hit by oncoming traffic.

18 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/20/2020

When turning on the vehicle the lights will power surge. One day the vehicle just didn't start. The next day it started and as I was driving down the road I lost thermostat control, the power locks were involuntarily going up and down, the radio shut off, and the speedometer and gauges all went to the left and were not working. When I finally parked the vehicle I could smell an electrical burning smell. The vehicle was in motion for all of this on a 2 lane road.

19 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/08/2020

While driving at different speeds, or during breaking and acceleration, the entire vehicle shirts off including the engine, a message flashes in the dash stabil brake, then the vehicle is dead while moving. Sometimes it turns back on automatically, other times I have to attempt to start it multiple times.

20 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

The contact owns a 2016 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated while driving at night, the headlights did not function properly and would turn off inadvertently. The vehicle was originally taken to the dealer and diagnosed as headlight failure, and the bulbs were replaced. However, the failure recurred. The dealer was made aware of the failure and the dealer notified the manufacturer of the recurring failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.

21 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 10/09/2017

When I bought the Suburban it was daylight. . . Everything checked out fine. Then the next morning I went to back out of my driveway in the dark and almost hit a car. The backup camera screen is so bright you cannot see anything except very bright light in your eyes. That first few mornings I thought well I'll read thru the manual about how to adjust the brightness. I have now looked thru the book several times and we have established . . . There is no adjustment offered. . This is a definite hazard and now I see from a search on the internet. . We are not the only ones with this problem. My 2014 Suburban did not have this issue. . . So they must have changed something, the adjustment. . Brand of camera, something. This needs to be fixed before someone gets hurt. . If a person in dark clothes walked behind me I could not see them because of the brightness. Someone is going to get hurt if they don't fix this.

22 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/20/2017

When the vehicle is put into reverse, the rear back-up camera comes on. The display of the camera is extremely too bright, and makes it difficult to back up properly with a glaring light in your face. There is currently not an option to decrease the brightness of the camera. I have contacted the Chevrolet dealership in person and the Chevrolet corporation by chat and by phone. Each time, no options were provided to assist with the issue. When I contacted the Chevrolet corporation, I was told to contact the NHTSA if I felt that there was an issue. I feel that the bright display of the rear back-up camera could potentially be a safety issue, since it impedes the driver's ability to see clearly with the side view mirrors. This issue has occurred several times.

23 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 10/10/2016

The headlamps do not provide sufficient light output to safely operate the vehicle at night. It is very easy to over drive the vehicle headlamps and the bright lights do not provide enough increase in light output to address the issue. I do not feel safe operating this vehicle at night in any reduced light condition.

24 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/04/2016

Trailer brake assist malfunction during trip while driving with trailer connected on highway no problem after ending trip and disconnecting trailer brake assist warning light appeared and 1st glance brakes seemed fine but final pedal pressure is very stiff almost can't stop SUV.

25 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

Especially at night, the "welcome lights/reverse lights" of a Chevrolet Suburban confuse me because I think that person's vehicle is backing up. This causes me to either hesitate or at worst, panic if I think they are about to back into me. The photo attached is of a different gm vehicle, the GMC terrain, but the appearance is the same.

26 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/01/2016

The gm instrument cluster stepper motors and lights have failed. This results in a safety hazard because it is important to know the speed of the vehicle and the fuel level as well as other important engine information.

27 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/05/2015

Headlamps too dull. Hard to see the road at night. No side vision at night. Has been like this since new. I have complained to 2 different dealers and they say there is no problem. I have put in a complaint the the manufacturer and have heard nothing back.

28 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/05/2014

I am a teacher and got a call in my classroom that my Suburban was on fire parked in the parking lot. The fire department was called and when I got outside, sure enough there was smoke all in the Suburban and smoke coming from the roof of the vehicle (not the hood). When the fire department arrived, they entered the vehicle, disconnected the battery, and proceeded to tear out my rear headliner to extinguish the electrical fire that was occurring. My insurance company had the vehicle towed and it was deemed reparable, which I was not too happy about seeing as we don't really know the cause of the fire beyond electrical. The fire originated near the rear dome light and burned the headliner and melted the paint off the roof the the vehicle. The location of the fire was not a in a place where any mechanic could check to have prevented this from occurring and I am concerned about the safety of the vehicle moving forward. I am not in a financial position to afford a new Suburban and do love mine, but am now just concerned. I am thankful no one was in the vehicle and that no one was hurt. . But had a parent dropping a kid off to school not noticed the smoke coming off the roof of my car in the parking lot, things could have been much worse. I had also just filled my tank up the day before so the car was sitting with 30 gallons of gasoline in it. I am also thankful that I was not trying to scramble to get my 4 kids out of the car (and yes we do use the 3rd row seat daily). I think this incident needs to be looked at to prevent any other owner of a 2003 Suburban from having a similar experience. There were no recalls on my vehicle that would have lead to this issue.

29 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/08/2010

Transmission slippage; driver side mirror defects; head lamps & loose steering column. Biggest issue is transmission. While driving on highway at 70 mph, transmission began slipping without any prior warning. Situation was extremely dangerous as it was night-time driving with little or no opportunity to get vehicle off the interstate. Other family vehicles have had the same issue with the transmission going out without warning. Also, the driver side mirror goes out gradually, as the liquid that defrosts the mirror goes bad and leaks into the mirror. This mirror has already been replaced once, at the cost of $400+. This mirror is also a hazard as the driver is unable to use the mirror to adequate lane and traffic maneuvering. The steering column always seems to be loose. Nothing has been done, as of today's date, to correct the transmission issue as it is a costly repair.

30 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/01/2006

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact heard a knocking sound coming from the wheels when the front wheels were turned. She stated that the cause of failure may be the upper intermediate steering shaft. The dealer and manufacturer stated that she would have to pay $275 for the repair. The dealer did not have any recalls for the failure. The contact feels that there should be a recall due to the many repairs related to the wheel failure. She stated that a running board light is dim on the front left side of her vehicle, which she has noticed on many Suburbans. The current mileage is 65,000 and failure mileage was 40,000. Updated 02-01-08.

31 Exterior Lighting problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

Running lamps light bulb sockets appear to be defective. New light bulbs do not solve the problem. I contacted the dealer and the parts salesman told me it is a common problem with the wiring socket and it needs to be replaced. As I have been driving around I have noticed many chevy silverado's, Suburban's, and tahoes with running lamps inoperative.
