: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked; a child in the rear seat, outside of a child safety seat, became entangled in the rear passenger seat belt. The seat belt locked and all attempts to free the child only made the belt tighter. Assistance was obtained from an outside source that provided scissors to cut the belt and free the child. The child sustained bruises to the neck. Took the child to the doctor to check the neck bruises. The doctor stated that they will warn other patients of the danger associated with the seat belts. The contact stated there should be a safety release to eliminate a serious situation, a release button has to be added. Updated 06/05/2006.

The driver's seat belt failed on my 2003 chevy Suburban lt. From the time I purchased the vehicle new in oct 2003 until the seat belt finally outright failed, I noticed several instances where the seat belt tension locking mechanism would apparently jam and either not release for proper adjustment, or fail to engage and take up extra belt slack. This seemed to self correct for short periods before re-emerging. Finally, the tension mechanism stopped working completely. This left my seat belt totally limp and useless with no spring-like function to take-up the excess belt portion and unable to properly tighten and secure the driver in place. I called my chev dealership and expressed my desire to have this fixed immediately as a safety issue. They argued with me as to whether the symptom I described was actually a problem or not and indicated that they would have to order parts. Approx. 10 days later they notified me that I could bring it in for repair, but that they would assess carefully if actually a warranty item or not. Upon bringing the vehicle in, the chev dealership mechanic decided that yes - they would fix it under warranty. The repair however, was quite lengthy in time and involved three chev mechanics who worked in greta frustration and confusion as to how to replace the belt and tension device as they had little experience or knowledge in how to actually install the new part. I got the distinct impression that a proper tech support manual was either lacking or they simply chose not to follow it very well. Regardless, some thee hours later they deemed the belt fixed - and to their credit, I have not had any recurrent problem with the seat belt mechanism. In hindsight, I'm not sure how frequent this particular safety failure has occurred in 2003 chev Suburbans, but I decided to make it a matter of record in case chev needs to better address how dealership mechanics should respond to similar critical safety repairs in the future.

Seatbelt retractor, rear door seal.
Passenger's side seat belt will start retracting while your driving without putting foot on brake. It feels like the seatbelt is sucking passenger into the seat. Consumer has contacted dealer, and they replaced seatbelt. Consumer is still having the problem.
Rt & lt front seat belt retractors pin passengers to seat for no apparent reason. The only way to get out, is to release the seat belt. When driver or passenger tries to move forward, seat belt restrains person and will not let them move freely in the seat. Seat belt retractors have been replaced and then will be ok for a time before they start restraining passenger again. This is a safety issue for the driver who is trying to check traffic out his side window and is a nuisance for the passenger who cannot move about in the seat. This problem encourages the occupants to not wear the seat belts because of the inconvience of being pinned into the seat. All of this is in normal driving situations and not in emerengency situations.
Driver's seat belt will not pull out. Has been replaced 3 times. Passenger front seatbelt will not pull out, replaced 4 times.
After purchasing new 2000 vehicle, unable to properly secure child's safty seat into middle position of third row seats due to position of seat belt. Additionally, there is not means provided to secure safety strap. There is only one secure point provided, but it is next to a window and seat belt can'nt be properly secured to permit no movement with car seat. Also, the seat belt snaps are not positioned in the seam of the seat but several inches out from the seat back, thus making it impossible to secure any seat without movement. Manufacture representives have assured me that the safest seat in the vehilce for children is the middle position. Then why is a secure point next to a window and using a seat belt that relies on sudden stop of vehicle to stop the the movement of the seat belt? 2nd issue - firestone tires provided by manufacture were only inflated to 24 psi (that should have been 80 psi),with vehilce was delivered at sale. Thus giving false safety to new owner. It would appear that dealer might not be following prescribed saftey requirements in prep of vehilce prior to delivery to buyer. In light of the national concerns regarding firestone tires, it would be assumed that all firestone tires not to mention all brands should be up to proper safety inflation standards prior to sale to public. Please provide input on how these issues can be resolved.
