1 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/20/2014

My 2002 chevy Trailblazer started running sluggish and getting terrible gas mileage, then I started smelling gas while I was driving, pulled over and there was gas pouring out of the tank underneath the car! very dangerous!.

2 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/13/2014

I just purchased the 2002 chevy Trailblazer from masano auto retailers, as is, in reading, pennsylvania. Upon stopping at a gas station because I noticed the rear lights were not working, I smelled gas, and upon looking under the vehicle I saw gas dripping down from the bottom of the gas tank. I could not see exactly where the gas is leaking from, and only noticed that gas was running down the gas tank. I went online and noticed that this is a common problem with the 2002 chevy Trailblazer, and wondered why such a dangerous issue that could result in a catastrophe was not the subject of a recall. Really! its ok to allow people to drive in cities and park near homes, schools and businesses with leaking gas tanks, not to mention the environment for crying out loud. Where is the recall?.

3 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/16/2012

Lately, and intermittently, when the gas tank is 1/2 full or less and a sharp turn is made, the gas gauge goes to e, the low gas light comes on and the car will not go more than 20 mph as if it is losing power. It's most scary when it occurs making a turn onto freeway entrance ramp and I am trying to get power to enter moving traffic. Typically, I have to pull over, turn the car off and restart to get the car to run normal.

4 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2011

When I drive my Chevrolet Trailblazer, the gas gauge is all over. I can have a full tank one minute, and half a mile down the road have 3/4 of a tank. Also it does the same thing when it has a quarter of a tank, it will say it has 1/4 of a tank, and a mile down the road it just drops and the low fuel light comes on. Also I can park the vehicle with about 3/8 of a tank, and start it later, and it says empty, and the low fuel light is on. We also have a 2004 GMC envoy that does the same thing. This has been an issue for both vehicles the entire time we have owned them. Both were bought in 2010. This occurs every tank of gas, and the actions are not always the exact same, so it is hard to tell if we actually need gas or not, sometimes they are actually almost out other times the have approximately 1/4 of a tank left. We have not done anything to correct the issue because we do not know what is causing it.

5 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2010

Wife put fuel in the vehicle because it was down to a 1/4 tank and it is now the winter months, we dont like to be below half a tank. She drove it home and later that nite I got into the vehicle and noticed the gauge read empty and the light was on. I went to put fuel in it and at 5 dollars the tank for fuel. The gas gauge show empty upon even after filling the tank. The fuel level in the tank falls to a sufficient level to cause the gauge to display erratic and false readings. Nothing has been done to correct the failure which continues to be a constant problem. Fuel level now must be estimated through the use of the trip odometer the gauge reads full when you first start the vehicle and sometimes stays at full or reads empty with the light on. Called local garage they said sounds like a bad fuel level sensor common problem with chevy Trailblazers from 02-09.

6 Tank Assembly problem

8 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While driving approximately 40 mph, there was an overpowering gasoline odor in the vehicle. She stated that the service engine warning light was illuminated on the dashboard and the failure persisted for several months before the vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer advised that the fuel tank was leaking where the filler neck met the tank body. She was advised that the fuel tank assembly would need replacing. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 162,121 and the current mileage was 162,563.

9 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2010

I have a 2002 chevy Trailblazer that has had a host of problems to date. Now I am experiencing two more. Twice in the past few months I have been driving down the road with a 1/4 of a tank of gas or better when suddenly the car stalls, the gas gauge goes to empty. If I sit for a moment and then restart the car, the gas gauge goes back to 1/4 full or better. It is very frightening when the car just suddenly stalls out without warning. The other problem is the abs system is now coming on when it should not. In the past two weeks I have had trouble bringing the car to a stop. The abs comes on and disengages the brakes and the car skids ahead instead of stopping immediately. We had the same thing happen on our 2000 chevy silverado truck. It was fixed under recall, then started happening again after a couple of years. When we called chevy, they said they only fix under recall once. We were able to disengage the abs. I have my service station looking now to see if we can disengage the abs on the Trailblazer too. These chevys are a real hazard!.

10 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2010

Came home after refueling my 2002 chevy Trailblazer ltz w/151000mi, noticed strong smell of gasoline. Never noticed before - thought I just spilled some. Smell persisted, looked under hood, under car, noticed fuel dripping down from fuel tank. Called gm cust svc 866-790-5600 was advised there is special coverage for warranty replacement of plastic tank to remedy corrosion. Supervisor confirmed my VIN is in range but would not honor warranty - they only cover to 10yr-120k mi. Vehicle has never been in an accident, so crack in tank must be a manufacturing defect - plastic tank should last the life of the vehicle. Gm refuses to accept responsibility for defective tank.

11 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2009

I have a 2002 Trailblazer with a gas leak coming from the top of the tank and for 3 days now it has had a smell of gas.

12 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2009

There is rust all over the inside of my engine, two exhaust manifold bolts rusted off and I had an exhaust leak. I had to have it fixed so I took it into a Chevrolet dealer. While it was there they told me that the gas tank had a crack in it and had to be replaced, at a cost of over 700. 00 dollars. I can't afford to have the manifold and tank fixed. Now I am faced with either exhaust leaking or gas leaking. They said the gas tank was cracked at the neck. I called general motors to state that I thought it was a manufacturers defect. Gm called the dealer and they told them that the vehicle was in good shape and that there was no sign of misuse or neglect. Gm called me back and stated that the crack was due to the age of the vehicle and wear and tear. I have never heard of a vehicle gas tank cracking for no reason unless there was a defect in the gas tank itself. The tank is plastic and the neck is also plastic, it is all one piece. I feel this is a very dangerous problem and through no fault of my own I have to find a remedy to the problem. The only way to tell if there is a leak is if the tank is full.

13 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

Fuel leak and heavy fuel fumes with gas tank/assembly leak on 2002 chevy Trailblazers.

14 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2008

Failure Date: 06/24/2008

Service engine light goes on intermittently. Strong gasoline odor from rear around gas tank. Possible fuel leakage.

16 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2008

After refilling fuel tank full of gasoline and driving until ~80% full, I smelled fuel vapors coming from the vehicle when standing outside. Outside temperature was ~70 f. After the next trip the vehicle mil came on. Codes were related to evap leak p0442. Dealer replaced fuel tank and filler neck tube, cracked. Almost 1 year prior gm issued a notice that this issue might occur and would be covered at gm's expense. I recalled that I had received a letter regarding a mil light that might appear. Dealer repaired vehicle under this letter / warranty. Vehicle had ~80k miles. Driven daily in 4 season area.

17 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2008

I own a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer lt. For the last two weeks there is a very strong odor of gasoline. Apparently it is leaking from the top of the tank. I understand that gm is paying for repairs of this problem on 2002 Trailblazer ext's under a special coverage warranty. If my vehicle has the same problem the ext, why isn't gm applying that coverage to the lt?.

18 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2008

During routine driving I noticed a odor of gas from inside my vehicle. Upon inspection I discovered gas leaking from above the gas tank and onto the ground. I brought my vehicle to the dealership and was informed that the fuel module had rotted and therefore was leaking gas onto the top of the gas tank. The gas would then collect on top of the gas tank and cause a strong odor of gas inside the vehicle. I had the fuel module replaced for a total cost of $810. 52.

19 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2008

21 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2007

In 2005 my 2002 Trailblazer - had smelling fumes, ses light, and a bad diagnosis from the dealer. Partly due to the codes coming up for the evap system and related purge. After several resets of the ses light, one tech found gas dripping from under the the tank. The tank was replaced at no charge. In 2007 the same problems again - had smelling fumes, ses light, when dealer was contacted they said that the warranty had expire. We showed them a letter that staid that this was an actual problem and that Chevrolet will replace the fuel at the end they repaced the fuel tank at no charge.

22 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/09/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact smelled gas fumes between the radiator and the fuel tank when he started the vehicle. After a few minutes of driving, he noticed fuel leaking from the top of the fuel tank to the bottom. The current and failure mileages were 115,700.

I have had two 2002 Trailblazers both developed gas leaks from the gas tank . Gm did not agree to repair either one.

24 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2007

About 1 month ago we started smelling gas fumes and than we started to notice gas was leaking from our tank onto the ground. When we brought it into the mechanic they told us we had a leak in the fuel tank. Our car is a 2002 Trailblazer ltz and it just hit 52,000 miles. It has been garage kept the entire time. When we contact the dealer we bought it from they said it was no longer under warrenty and there was not TSB's out. After some research I found the TSB that was put out for this defect. I have not recevied a recall and am experiencing a difficult time getting this problem resloved.

25 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2006

Check engine light was on vehicle, computer check said fuel tank has a leak or crack. This is a safety hazard which could cause a fire or explosion and should be recalled. Had to have replaced by the garage at my expense. Research on the internet has shown there have been a lot of these Trailblazers with this problem and there should be recalled.

26 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2006

I kept smelling the strong odor of gasoline in the garage or even in the parking lot for about a day after I filled my fuel tank on my 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. There sometimes was a wet spot on the garage floor near the filler cap that appeared to be gasoline. The "check engine soon" light eventually came on. The dealer could find nothing wrong when they pressure-tested the fuel system but the computer fault code indicated an evaporative emissions failure. They re-set the light, but the problem persisted and the light soon came back on the next time I re-fueled. I read somewhere on the nets website about other Trailblazer owners who had a broken check ball in their filler necks. I suggested this to the dealer who confirmed that this was my problem too. They charged me nearly $300 to repair the tank neck. I feel that this is the result of defective emissions control device and therefore should be covered under warranty. (I have only 50 k miles on the vehicle). At what point does something like this become a recall since this seems to be happening to others as well?.

27 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/05/2006

Top of gas tank - pours out gas.

28 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2006

Check engine light came on my 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer (86,000 miles). Team Chevrolet analyzed and advised the gas tank is cracked. This same problem occurred at 12,000 miles but was repaired for free as vehicle was under warranty and there was an alert issued for this problem. However, the alert "policy" ran out at 70,000 miles so the dealership, nor gm will cover the estimated expenses of $850. I protested that this was a known and repeated problem and a fire/safety issue but they are not willing to assist in any way.

29 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2006

(1) no events leading to problem (2) fuel tank replacement led to full replacement (3) replaced fuel tank with dealership.

30 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2006

2002 chevy Trailblazer 1) check engine light came on. Observed strong gasoline odor and leakage. Vehicle failed emissions inspection. 2) took car for service where they identified that the gas tank's fill nipple had split where it was joined to the tank (stress failure?). 3) I heat-welded the nipple back on to the tank.

31 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2003

4 wheel drive failure light on dash board and "4 wheel drive full" and "4 wheel drive low" light keep flashing and when I placed truck in park and shut off truck, it lunged backward. Gas tank wouldn't take gas and the last time it spit gas out and out onto pavement. Brakes don't seem to stop very well and I now have a pulsating feeling under my foot when I brake.

32 Tank Assembly problem
