38 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2008

I detected a strong gas smell and took the truck to be repaired. I was informed that the fuel pump module was leaking due to being rusted out. I took it to the dealership (jeff wyler). They agreed to cover the repair of the gas tank and the labor (due to a special warranty due to other fuel leak problems), but would not cover the cost ( $454 + tax) which was the part that was the cause of the problem. The assembly of this part is unpainted medal and rusts very easily (most other company use plastic assembles to prevent this very problem). The location of this part makes it almost impossible to wash, in order to remove any salt or other corrosive elements. I do not see a way that I could have prevented the rusting of this part. I believe this is a design defect that chevy should have to correct, due to the fact that it could have very easily cause a fire to the vehicle due to the amount of fuel/vapor leaking.

48 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2007

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer ext. The "service engine soon" light came on. I took it in to a Chevrolet dealership. It was found that the gas tank was leaking gas and the tank would not hold pressure thus causing the light to come on. The tank was leaking where the filler neck attaches to the tank. The dealership service director stated that the the crack was clearly a defect and was not caused by damage or misuse. Because the vehicle was out of warranty he stated the repair would be at my expense and would be approximately $750-$800. 00. I phoned Chevrolet customer assistance and filed a complaint. After they communicated with the Chevrolet district service rep. They concluded that gm warranty would not pay for the repairs, even despite the danger and liability involved. They did suggest that if the dealership would approve, to have them do it at the dealership cost. The gm customer assistance rep stated that my only other form of arbitration was through the better business bureau. As of this date the repairs have not been made. I have found quite a number of Trailblazer owners on the internet who have had the same problem and have had to pay to have the repair made out of pocket.

50 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2007

I own a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer w/ 69016 miles. My service engine soon light came on so I took it into bill heard Chevrolet where the veh was purchased to check the reason for the light. I was advised by the service manager that this was due to a leak in the gas tank and that the repair would cost approximately $1000. I took the vehicle home to have a second opinion done and do further research on the problem. I have found doing a google search that this is a common issue with the 2002-2005 chevr Trailblazer. So I contacted the dealership and they stated that their have been no recalls and that gm is not anticipating to have one. This is a fire hazard and major safety issue. How can this not be recalled?.

51 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/24/2007

I noticed a strong smell of gas when checking the air pressure in the tires. After looking under the SUV I noticed the tank was dripping gas and was very wet. I was in a small town on a trip with no access to parts so a local shop had to remove the tank, take the sending unit apart, and repair the rusted and leaking sending unit in order to safely get me home.

52 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2007

Fuel leak and strong fuel odor from left rear filler neck area. My vehicle started having this problem a few days ago and a quick internet search turned up lots of other people with the same problem. There is a great risk of fire with potential for injury/death and of course property damage. This vehicle should be recalled ASAP! email update (February 07, 2007): the leak is from the fuel pump/fuel sender module that enters the tank. An epoxy repair was made. We are in the process of trading this vehicle in. We live in upstate NY where a great deal of salt is used in winter. It seems the design of this tank allows a brine solution to sit in a recess where the fuel pump/sender module lives and corrodes the components. From my internet research I found a lot of people with similar reports of this issue. It is extremely dangerous, especially if the vehicle is garaged.

53 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2007

Have a 2003 chevy trail blazer and the gas tank is leaking from the top. I understand that there is a TSB # 05012 out on this issue. I had recently been at my dealer to get the check engine light checked. They said that I needed to replace the compressor right away. Well that was over a year ago and it is still working just fine. . That was not the problem. Seems there are a lot of us out there who have this leaking gas tank problem.

55 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/17/2007

- the contact stated that while attempting to put gas into his 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer (failed mileage 26521) the gas would not enter the tank. The gas would spill back out onto the ground. The contact attempted twice more with the same results. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer and the dealer informed him that the problem was with the hose and the fuel filter. The contact is having the same problem as service bulletin number 040604003.

56 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2007

I own a 2003 Trailblazer swb model. I started to smell gas. Seeing the vehicle was out of warranty, I waited until it got warm to check it out. When I took out the gas tank there was a pin hole in the return on the base of the sending unit. So I cleaned it off with a wire brush and found more pin holes. I belong to a Trailblazer forum, and this seemed to be a more prevalent problem then it should be.

57 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2007

I have a 2003 chevy Trailblazer. It has approximately 62,000 miles on it. The gas tank has a leak causing a ses code of p0442. This type of breakage has been reported before and is well documented. The manufacturer claims no responsibility for this failure. They claim it is due to the "age of the car". I cannot believe that it is acceptable for a gas tank to wear out in 3 and 1/2 years! I believe it is a manufacturing defect as it occurs in these types of vehicles frequently. I would ask nhsta to investigate this situation. Thank you for your assistance.

58 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/27/2006

I have a 2003 chevy Trailblazer ext, which also has a leak in the plastic gas tank. It was detected in the garage by the strong odor. I was told by the mechanic today that this is not uncommon for this model. The plastic break is where the neck is molded into the tank. Very dangerous situation, considering many homes, as ours, has the water heater in the garage.

59 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 12/22/2006

1) began to notice a strong smell of gasoline when traveling in auto. This smell became stronger when vehicle was parked. Also had a "service engine soon" light on instrument cluster. When looking under car for leak of gasoline, smell was stronger near fuel tank. The smell was so strong that I was afraid to leave auto in garage at my home for fear of a fire. 2) auto was taken to a repair facility for "service engine soon" light and gas smell. They discovered a leak in the gas tank at the plastic weld of the nipple that connects to the filler tube. They stated that there seemed to be a failure at the weld or an incomplete weld from the manufacturer. The only solution for this problem would be the replacement of the fuel tank. 3) this repair was completed by the repair facility on 12/28/2006 I have access to this part for inspection.

60 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/15/2006

61 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/14/2006

I own a 2003 chevy Trailblazer. A month after we purchased it we found out the vehicle leaks fuel when on a driveway incline. The check engine light came on and I took the vehicle to a mechanic. They said it was code on p0440 -evap leak small. When they checked it out they found a crack around filler neck of gas tank. They said there was already a tech service bulletin that said a small crack occurs above fluid level. Gas tank needs to be replaced. I called a dealership and apparently these gas tanks are hard to come by because they are back ordered due to this being so common on this vehicle.

65 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2005

Contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer . While driving on road engine check light came on . Vehicle was taken to dealership 3 times to have the engine check light reset . 66 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2005

When filling up my gas tank, it regularly overflows before the automatic shut off a the pump. This problem has occurred at various gas stations, and from research, found that this is common problem. This is extremely dangerous as gas will often spill on my clothes, shoes and the side of the vehicle. Not to mention the astronomical cost of gas these days! I can't afford this problem. How can it be fixed and if it's a common problem, why hasn't a recall been issued?.

67 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2005

Contact states tank gas cracked in June and she had a new one put on. They did not notice anything wrong prior to this happening. . They noticed a gas leak, and that was when they replaced the gas tank. She bought new tires on 7-7-05 ,and now they driver's side wheel bearing failed. Also, heard a roaring noise, and took the car to dealer on 7-20-05. She has not talked to the manufacturer yet. The car has 63,000 miles on it. Vehicke is a 2003 gm Trailblazer.

68 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2005

I own a 2003 chevy Trailblazer. I have been smelling gas fumes for the last couple of years and when I have taken to the local dealerships they stated that it was just "spillage and normal" for that type of car. My check engine light stays on and I have been told by autozone personnel that the "code" indicates some kind of emissions leak. When reviewing the open complaints, I noticed that there are many complaints very similar to what I have been experiencing. It is mostly when I fill up my gas tank over 1/2 a tank. I am afraid to fill it up full due to the heavy smell of gas.

69 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2004

Service engine light came on immediately after filling tank with gas. Took to mechanic and they tightened the gas cap and then reset the service engine light and drove around and no light came on. Three days later the service engine soon light came on again. Took back to mechanic and they ran more diagnostics and found three crack s in the opening (neck) of the gas tank. I had to have the tank replaced in order for the vehicle to function without the service engine light to come on. A new gas tank on a 2003 vehicle is unheard of and I wonder how many other gas tanks on 2003 chevy Trailblazers or other gm vehicles have had to replaced due to this same problem??.

70 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2004
