Tank Assembly problems of the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer - part 2

191 problems related to tank assembly have been reported for the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2011

Vehicle fuel gauge had incorrect reading. Vehicle ran out of gas on highway. When gas tank is filled vehicle fuel gauge gives false empty reading. Vehicle also stalls at times. Fuel gauge moves around often during operation of vehicle. It appears this is a common issue with this vehicle.

37 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph the vehicle stalled. Upon restart, the vehicle continued to operate as normal. The contact also stated that the fuel gauge would display a reading of empty when the fuel tank was not empty. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the ethanol within the fuel was eating away at the fuel sending unit. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The failure mileage was 109,000. The VIN was unavailable.

38 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2011

2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer, 4dr, lt, 4wd. Fuel gauge stopped working. Fill up tank, gauge goes up to full, but then falls back down to empty. I do not know the level of fuel in my vehicle. Appears to be a common problem among 2003-2006 Trailblazers. Have ran out of fuel on the road. Most likely fuel sensor or cluster.

39 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2011

The gas tank registers empty even when full. Gas gage floats randomly up and down, not staying accurate, gas light coming on constanly saying "low fuel" even as pulling away from the tank after a complete fillup. Had been doing it for a few weeks off/on, now constant. Gage constantly reading empty, rarely moving at all. Gas light stays on. Now seems to be causing problems with engine/transmission. Car is suddenly moving slow when accelerating initally.

40 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/19/2011

Car ran out of fuel while on the interstate during rush hour. Guage still read over a quarter of a tank.

41 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2011

Have a 2006 chevy Trailblazer that only has 36,000 miles and the fuel gauge is not working properly. If I fill it up, it will show empty and the empty alert will start sounding while the light comes on. Eventually it will start working after about 80 or so miles. Then when the tank gets to about 1/4 it starts acting up again. I have seen many complaints, in fact hundreds if not thousands, of people having the same issue online.

42 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/15/2011

Fuel gauge began reading inaccurately for a while. At one time, the gauge showed a quarter tank, but then my vehicle shut down while I was driving on redwood hwy in grants pass, or due to being out of gas. Since then, the gauge has completely stopped working. Sometimes, the gauge will show up to a half tank, but the needle quickly falls back to empty. This is a chronic problem. Two mechanics have told me that the sending unit very commonly fails on Trailblazers and that he would need to drop the tank to replace it.

43 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/14/2011

The fuel guage recently stopped working after filling the tank with gas. It reads empty (and the low fuel amber light illuminates and the warning bell chimes). It then will go between 1/4 tank to empy to full to empty (back and forth) even though the tank is completely full. This vehicle suffered the same problem when it was under warranty (it had less than 3 years 36,000 miles). At that time gm replaced the "fuel sensor sending unit" at no charge to me since the vehicle was under warranty. We are not suffering the same problem. I would have to surmise that there must be a defect since it can not possibly be normal to replace a fuel guage sensor twice on a vehicle that is just now five years old with 61,000 miles on it. I fear for my family's safety since an accident could result should our Trailblazer run out of gas. . . Stall. . . And subsequently cause an accident.

44 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that after adding gasoline to the fuel tank he noticed that the fuel gauge would read empty. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor had it been repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and advised him that there were no recalls on his vehicle. The failure mileage was approximately 67,400.

45 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2011

Gas tank was on empty, went to gas station to fill up, gas gauge read full when I pulled away, suddenly dipped to empty. It would then periodically switch between empty and full. Same thing happens every time I fill it up [about 3 more times now].

46 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/12/2011

Two days before we were to leave on vacation in our 2006 Trailblazer, my wife filled up the gas tank and when she got in the car it read below empty and the check engine light was on. She immediately went to a shop where she was told "it;s probably the sending unit, they go bad on Trailblazers all the time". This was before a diagnostic test, and the test confirmed it. Being that it is a certified used vehicle, 5 years old with 50,000 miles, we took it to the dealer. They said they could do it for $470. 00 and it was not uncommon. I am 50 years old and have owned a dozen vehicles over the years, most older then this, and have never had this problem, ever, on any vehicle. Since we were leaving on a vacation in two days, we felt we had better have it fixed, even though we could not afford it. I have since talked to other mechanics, and asked if there are any problems with Trailblazers from 2006. Every time I have been told "not really, other then the fuel sending units, which is an expensive fix". Unfortunately I have experienced that firsthand. While I can't replace the things we couldn't do on our vacation due to the cost of the repair, I would sure like to know how to get my money back. And since the new one came from the dealer and is oem equipment, how long will this one last? any help you can provide will be greatly appreciated.

47 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2011

At 61000 miles, vehicle's fuel level gauge began behaving erratically. Upon filling tank the gauge would read "empty". After a few days indicator would go up to 3/4 full then would drop to "empty" the next day. Vehicle ran out of gas unexpectedly on interstate during rush hour where I had to coast across 3 busy lanes to the shoulder. Had vehicle taken to dealer for diagnosis which returned "fuel sender" faulty. Replacement estimate over $400! I declined as I am a retired senior citizen on a fixed income. Will attempt to use odometer to guess fuel level.

48 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

Fuel guage went down to zero in the tank and alarm bell sounded. Tank was full at the time, then 2 days later it went back to full on the gauge. It is constantly changing. I called the dealer and they said this has been a problem on alot of trail blazers but there is no recall or free fix by gm. Repairs would be anywhere from $600 to $1200. This is dangerous and I could run out of gas with no warning. This should be fixed by gm free of charge.

49 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2011

Fuel gauge started to flucuate about a month ago. The vehicle has approx 135k miles on it. Had onstar run diagnostic and showed "high fuel sensor" error to take the car in for service. . . Service engine light came on as well. When the tank is full, same issue as others have had, the gauge registers empty then starts to go up after several hours. To this date, the engine light goes on and off; every time put gas in registers empty to half when full. I have ran out of gas once last week on way to work, luckily I was not on interstate yet when gauge read I had almost half tank. When I took to dealer for regular oil change asked them to check it. They confirmed bad sensor and $600 repair cost to drop tank and fix issue. The part costs $45 at local auto parts store - crazy! since this is an issue that all drivers are having gm should issue the recall and fix the issue!.

50 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that the fuel gage would inaccurately display the fuel tank as empty when full to capacity. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnosis or repairs. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 90,000.

51 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2011

The fuel gauge has stopped giving the correct level of gas in the tank.

52 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/28/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that after refueling the fuel tank, the fuel level gauge displayed an inaccurate reading of empty. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 71,000.

53 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2011

Immediately after refueling to fill tank and starting vehicle, the fuel gauge went to full, back down to empty, then to half full. The gauge continued to flip back and forth. At each false "empty" the chime rang and yellow light appeared . The gauge continued to do this if full or close to empty. Every time tank was filled the trip odometer had to be reset to zero and date and number of gallons noted. This is the only way we can track fuel consumption. We cannot trust the gauge readings at all. We have to do expressway driving to commute and have to refuel more often to keep track. We worry about safety of us and others!.

54 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/21/2011

Fuel guage went down to zero in the tank and alarm bell sounded. Tank was full at the time, then 2 days later it went back to full on the gauge. It is constantly changing. I called the dealer and they said there haven't been enough complaints aabout this to warrant a recall and repairs would be anywhere from $600 to $1200. This is dangerous and I could run out of gas with no warning. This should be fixed by gm free of charge.

55 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/18/2011

Filled 2006 Trailblazer full of gas after tank was on empty. Fuel gauge wavers all over the place and eventually settles on low fuel level and continues to chime even though the tank is completely full.

56 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/16/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet trailbalzer. The contact stated that the fuel gauge malfunctioned and would fluctuate from a reading of a full tank to an empty tank. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000. The VIN was unavailable.

57 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer ext. The contact stated that the fuel gauge warning indicator illuminated after refueling and often , while driving at various speeds. The warning light remained illuminated until the engine was turned off. Additionally, the fuel gauge would not display an accurate fuel level reading. The contact notified the authorized dealer where they advised that the fuel tank senor would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. Updated 5/24/11.

58 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2011

Tl- the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While driving approximately 55 mph the contact noticed the fuel light indicator light illuminated on the instrument panel and warning sound notified the vehicle ran out of fuel. The contact stated prior to the fuel gauge indicating the fuel tank was empty it indicated there was half a tank of fuel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The mechanic stated the fuel gauge needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. There was an investigation under NHTSA action number dp10001 (fuel system, other:storage:fuel gauge system) which may be related to the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 40,000. Ds.

59 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/10/2011

Starting last week when I filled up my tank, the fuel gauge will not reset, but rather goes straight to empty and the fuel light indicator light comes on. The warning light stays on the gauge reads empty. Some times the gauge will read correctly, however, most times it stays at empty. After researching the problem, it appears that this is a well known problem for this specific vehicle as many people are experiencing the same issues. There does not appear to be a certain mileage this happens at based on the research, but it is definitely a problem. I have read that some people experiencing the vehicle sputtering while they were driving leading to the check engine light coming on; all this happening after fueling the vehicle and driving it. Many people have gone to the dealership and gm claims that this is not a problem. I do not know what the protocol for recalling certain parts of vehicles are, but this appears to be a known problem that is being brushed under the rug. The vehicle this is happening to is a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. Thank you for your time.

60 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2011

Inaccurate fuel level 2006 Trailblazer. Sometimes when I fill the tank the low fuel light goes on and the gauge goes to empty. Other times it looks like it has about a tank and a half on the needle. Some days the gauge wont work at all. I have resorted to using the trip odometer because the gauge is totally inaccurate.

61 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2011

2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer LS 4. 2l i6 4x4 98,000 miles- fuel gauge not working after fuel up. Gauge shows empty when in fact the tank is full. The check engine light is also on. Gauge also fluctuates from full to empty while driving. This is very hazardous as I could run out of gas merging on the highway or pulling out in traffic. I have no way of telling how much fuel that I have other than keeping track of the mileage (and that is not always accurate). After searching this topic on the internet I see that this is a very common problem. I spoke with the Chevrolet dealership about this issue, and they told me that it was the fuel sending unit in the gas tank (which they did say is a common problem on this vehicle). They said it will cost around $800 to fix it. I am going to have to keep driving my vehicle the way it is because I can not come up with that money at this time. . .

62 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/05/2011

2006 chevy Trailblazer gas gage is dropping to empty and gas alarm goes off when it has almost 1/2 a tank. There are thousands of complaints for this problem on line, and it has been dangerous. I think there needs to be a recall. If you can search this problem on line you would see how bad it has been.

63 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2011

The fuel gauge is inaccurate. Everytime I fill up my gas take it stays on e with the fuel light on. After driving maybe 60 miles or more it will re-read how much fuel is in my tank. With 3/4 tank it almost immediately just decreases down to e again and will stay there. Took it to the dealership but way to expensive to repair. I have to track my miles and have noticed in online forums that I'm not the only complaint about this issue with the Trailblazers and envoys.

64 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2011

The fuel gauge worked great and eventually started to read empty when there was plenty of fuel in the tank. Sometimes it starts at full and slowly goes to empty. Other times, it goes straight to empty without missing a beat. Now it occurs all the time. Have yet to repair it because I see that supposedly a recall is in the works and there should be!! with as many people that have had the problem including accidents and other extreme inconveniences, gm should definitely do something about it.

65 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2011

In February of this year, the fuel gauge suddenly became erratic. When fuel was near empty, it would read "full" or "half full". The engine repair light would go on and off inconsistently during the same time. I thought it might be the quality of gasoline, but trying different brands did not help. Within a few months, no matter how much fuel was in my tank, the gauge would read "e" for empty, with the needle never moving from "e". It is a safety hazard because I have to reset my tripometer when filling up on a new tank of gas, so I know about 250 miles, I need to fill up again. If I don't do this, I could run out of gas, cause a crash, or a fatal accident since my gauge always reads empty. I have read many blog and complaints about the fuel gauge on the 2006 Trailblazer. I understand the repair and parts will be about $800. 00. In August 2011, I received a letter from gm indicating that there may be a problem with my fuel sensor and that they would be willing to pay half the cost for repair, but I believe that gm should be responsible for replacing the faulty sensor at "no charge" to the owner.

66 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2011

Over the past few months, the fuel gauge on makes false readings on a 2006 chevy Trailblazer ss 6. 0l. Upon filling up to a full tank the gage will say 'full' however while riding over bumps or accelerating/decelerating the gauge will bounce to empty and full regardless of the actual fuel level. This has occured for the past 20,000 miles continiously after fill up until approximately half the tank is emptied. Once the gauge stops bouncing between full and empty the reading is no longer accurate. In once case I ran out of fuel while on a highway while the gauge read 1/4 tank moments prior to running out of gas and stalling out. I was told there is an electrical short occuring in the fuel sending unit and is a known problem and would require replacing the entire sending unit to fix the issue.

67 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated after refueling, the fuel gauge displayed a reading of a quarter of a tank of fuel. The fuel gauge had since continuously displayed an improper reading. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they advised that fuel sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 55,000 and the current mileage was 61,000. The VIN was unavailable.

68 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

The fuel sending unit has quit working. Can not tell how much gas is in the gas tank by the gas gauge. When gas runs out, vehicle stops with no warning causing a possible accident especially in heavy traffic or at a stop light.

69 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

My gas gauge has been fluctuating. Sometimes the gauge would show empty when there was gas. Other times it would show there was fuel in the tank and there wasnt. I called my chevy dealer and told them what happened. They said that they had heard of other people having this problem, but there was no recall. I was told that the repair would be very expensive because the fuel tank would have to be dropped. I was told to use my trip odometer to keep track how many miles was driven on a tank so that I wouldnt run out of gas. I work for gm and I contacted our local customer service rep. I was told to have the repair made, pay for it and maybe something could be worked out. I am filing this complaint because I heard the usnhtsa was investigating this same issue. I wanted someone to know there are more of out here with the same problem.

70 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2011

Tl-the contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that the fuel sensor failed and the fuel gauge would display a reading of empty even though fuel was present within the tank. As a result, the vehicle would stall on an intermittent basis. No warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who stated that the fuel gauge sensor needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 95,000. Sm.
