I own a 2024 Chevrolet Trax purchased new in xxx. On xxx, the vehicle displayed a "service power steering — drive with care" warning. I experienced difficulty steering, and later that evening the vehicle would not start. The instrument cluster also displayed abnormal behavior, which was recorded on video. On xxx, an authorized Chevrolet dealership in [xxx], diagnosed a failed battery and replaced it under warranty. On xxx, while traveling on the highway with my family, the vehicle displayed "engine power is reduced" and struggled to accelerate. I sought assistance at an authorized Chevrolet dealership in [xxx]. The warning was cleared but returned shortly afterward. I have photographs, videos, repair documentation, and call records supporting these events. I am reporting these incidents because of the potential danger posed by sudden steering-system problems and loss of engine power during travel. I request that these safety concerns be reviewed for possible defects affecting this model. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
When driving with my [xxx] old “service power steering” message came on and instantly lost all power steering. Almost got on a head on collision. Car has no power steering. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 - 50 mph, the message that an update was needed was displayed. The contact selected to complete the update later; however, the computer system continued to perform the update, causing all indicators, screens, and displays to black out. The contact was able to drive to the residence. The following morning, the systems operated correctly, and the update had completed. While attempting to turn off the vehicle, the radio failed to turn off at the same time. The contact had to first turn off the radio manually. While driving approximately 40 mph, the message “power steering fluid low - drive with care” was displayed. The contact was able to make it to a stoplight after idling and then attempting to make a left turn, but the vehicle failed to exceed 6 mph. The contact drove to auto zone. A certified mechanic confirmed that the power steering fluid was low. The certified mechanic diagnosed the vehicle, and the check engine warning light was displayed. The contact confirmed that the warning light was illuminated; however, when the mechanic inspected the vehicle, the warning light was no longer illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was informed of the issue and was unable to provide a cause for the failure. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 29,000.
The contact owns a 2024 Chevrolet Trax. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle, the stabili-trak system warning light illuminated. The stabili-trak not functioning, the engine, and steering was reduced. The vehicle was violently shaking and rumbling while driving. The information screen went black while driving. Intermittently, the rear driver's side window was inoperable. The service tire monitoring system was illuminated. Service side-detection system was displayed. The lane keep assist not available warning light was illuminated. The adaptive control temporarily not available message was displayed. The contact called the dealer, who completed a software update and informed the contact that the vehicle might reset after restarting. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000.
The affected component is the design of the cruise control engagement button, and yes it is available for inspection. While the vehicle is below a certain (unknown) speed, if the cruise control engagement button is pressed, the cruse control engages at a relatively high rate of speed, and the vehicle lurches forward. This is especially problematic due to the design of the switch, which is a protruded lever-type mechanism that is easily swiped while the steering wheel turns. Due to this design, a significant risk is posed for injury and fatal accidents. I have had several instances where this has occurred and I was forced to react quickly to avoid an accident. And I've only owned the vehicle for 9 months. This problem seems to be inherent in the design, and is likely reproducible on any 2024 chevy Trax, and perhaps other chevy models with the same design. This vehicle has never been inspected. There are no warning lamps or other symptoms, besides the design of the cruise control system. This has happened since I bought the car brand new from the dealership.
