1 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2022

Passenger airbag error indicator. I took my 2013 Volt to the dealer who indicated it was a sensor error in the seat and requires a 1000. $ seat and sensor replacement. My Volt has 80k miles and no collisions or accidents. There is no justifiable reason for me to replace the front seat for 1000. 00 due to a poorly designed wire harness or sensor. I won't risk having a front seat passenger due to this malfunction. Furthermore I can't sell the vehicle. Why has the NHTSA closed this complaint?.

2 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2020

Air bag light stays on. Replaced driver seat with no change. Chevy dealership advised the issue now is the passenger seat sensors and quoted me $1000 to fix. They also told me there is only one part available in the USA and they dont know if the holder will sell it. This puts my car and passengers in danger if there is an accident. Chevy needs to address/fix this.

3 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/05/2020

Sevice airbag msg and the indicator light (red) comes on on dash and "ding dong" sound. Sometimes it goes off when passenger is in front seat. Sometimes it does not. Sometimes it comes on immediately upon start up and sometimes while driving. It is very sporatic and also very worrisome. Just started doing this a couple weeks ago and seems to be happening more frequently. Was on tonight going to work (night shift rn). Driving confitions don't seem to matter. Just if someone is innthe passenger seat or not.

4 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/08/2020

Airbag light on dash came on. Scheduled service visit with local chevy dealer who diagnosed a faulty front passenger presence sensor. Cost to fix with labor $913. 60. Failing seat sensor appears to be a common issue with 2012/13 chevy Volts.

5 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2020

Service passenger airbag warning indicator periodically goes on and off in a seemingly random manner. Car ussually starts with service passenger airbag warning / error on and often turns off while driving to later beep and come back on.

6 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/26/2020

Whenever someone sits in the passenger seat the service airbag light comes on. I think this disables the airbags which is not a good thing! this warning comes on right away when turning on the car.

7 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2020

My 2013 chevy Volt passenger airbag light warning came on my cluster indicating that it needed service which I was told that it was the passenger seat sensor but the cost to fix it's outrageous so I haven't fixed it and it's a safety issue and I believe that Chevrolet should have a recall on this matter because it's happening to many chevy Volt owners.

8 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/11/2020

Tl-the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated he took his vehicle to weseloh Chevrolet, (5335 paseo del norte, carlsbad, CA 92008) to get serviced and was told he had an recall on his vehicle for the hybrid power control module. The vehicle was repaired. The contact stated about two weeks later the airbag light illuminated on the dash panel. The contact stated he contacted the dealer and he is waiting for a call back. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 108000. Lj.

9 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2020

"service airbag" indicator appeared after car was started. Indicator persists.

10 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/22/2020

My check airbag light has been going on and off for years without instigation. It seems to be a recurring issue with chevy Volts and is an expensive repair that affects the safety of my passengers. It first appeared not long after I purchased the vehicle and it doesn't matter if the car is in motion or not when it appears again and again. It will also go away without being addressed. I'm worried it could appear again and my airbags won't deploy properly in the event of a crash.

11 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2020

Service air bag light has been on for six months, three different dealers has given different reasons and none of them has been able to replicate the differing claims. All three dealers estimates between $900 to $1,100 as possible resolution cost.

12 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 12/10/2019

Service airbag light comes on for no apparent reason. Concern that airbags won't work if needed.

13 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2019

Airbag light is on. Faulty seat sensor.

14 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2019

My passenger airbag light came on and it's been on for a while now. I went to a chevy Volt forum on google and apparently it's a problem that my chevy Volt owners are having so I think that this should be a safety issue since it involves the airbag.

15 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2019

My Volt service airbag light comes on and off all the time. When I go to make an appointment with service the light is off. My understanding is many Volt owners are having this issue with their cars. In all my years of driving different vehicles I've never had an airbag issue with a car. Chevy needs to stand behind this airbag issue!! a repair bill of over $800 is not acceptable!!.

16 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2019

The service airbag light turns on intermittently. It only happens when something is either set on my passenger seat or if someone sits in that seat. It will happen at anytime, generally when going from park to driving.

17 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2019

Starting in August of 2019, our 2013 chevy Volt air bag indicator light went on and off intermittently when the car was running. This usually happened while the car was moving, but sometimes when it was in park. It also happened whenever changing the speed using cruise control. We researched the problem and discovered it was related to the sensor in the passenger seat. When we did, we found that there are many other mentions of this problem online (especially given that there aren't many models of this car on the road), and that the solution is to replace the sensor in the seat. We took the car to a chevy dealer to assess the problem, and were told that even though it is a safety issue, that it was not covered under warranty. We were also told that when the sensor does not work properly, that the airbags likely won't inflate in the case of an accident. Therefore, we asked to schedule the repair, but were told the part could not be ordered due to the gm strike. In late December, we heard from the dealer that the part was in so we had it fixed today at the cost of $755. 05 we are very upset about the high cost for the repair since this is a known issue with this particular sensor, and a huge safety hazard.

18 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2019

About four weeks ago my service airbag light came on. No car crash and no wet seat for the sensor to go off. The light just came on when I turned the car one morning on my way to work. I use the car to commute to work and back home, have no children 70% of the time I drive alone.

19 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2019

The car regularly gets an airbag light relating to the passenger seat presence sensor. The airbag light will randomly come on and then turn off as I drive.

20 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

Same problem most everyone else is having. Service airbag message comes on frequently and red airbag light stays on. Started at around 85-90k miles. And no accidents. This is a safety issue and there needs to be a recall. How many complaints will it take? its a great car otherwise. Ford is much more proactive with safety recalls than gm.

21 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/04/2019

The check airbag indicator light and the passenger airbag go on and off repeatedly even if a passenger is in the seat. The passenger presence system has failed at 70,000 miles. It happens whenever the vehicle is being driven making it unsafe to have a passenger in the front seat. I have read several gm and Volt blogs and this seems to be a common problem with 2012 and 2013 Volt.

22 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 02/06/2019

My service airbag light has been coming on for months and I dont know why. I use this car for commuting and nothing has been done to the seat or car that would cause this service light to turn on. I have read on a few forums where this airbag light has came on for a few people and its leading to a sensor fix which can cost up to $1000. Has gm issued a recall on this problem since its a safety issue?.

23 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

Service airbag light coming on intermittently upon front passenger entering or leaving vehicle. Service light clears and reappears at random for several trips after this occurs.

24 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 07/20/2018

My 2013 chev Volt service air bag light comes on frequently. The dealership quoted me over $800 to fix it. I have read online others have this problem. I want my car to be safe. This should be a safety recall.

25 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 05/05/2018

The service airbag light is on, and the dealership says that it is the passenger side seat 'passenger presence module' that needs to be replaced, at a cost of over $800. The car is a 2013 with 79k miles, so is out of warranty, but I just find it really disappointing that this kind of manufacturer issue is not covered by the manufacturer through a recall or factory warranty. This isn't an issue of routine maintenance, and the car has never been in an accident, so it just does not seem like something I should have to pay $800 for.

26 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2018

Driving, so spills on seats, service airbag light goes on. $800. Fix at the local Chevrolet dealer. Why isn't there a recall on this fuse? I can't afford to fix it. I just purchased the car a year ago. No accidents, nothing amiss otherwise, love the car, gave up my newer prius to get this car.

27 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2018

Passenger presence sensor (pps) malfuncrion in passenger airbag in 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The car always consistently had the airbag light go on and off many times for years with the car. It always stays on due to pps module error now.

28 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2017

There is a capacitive field detector in the passenger seat also called a passenger position sensor. Instead of a simple buckle detector this part has failed in my car at 76,000 miles and the affect is that the passenger airbag is disabled. The part is apparently around 800$ as the entire seat assembly must be replaced. The indicator on the dash simply says to service the airbags. It may be anecdotal due to the intermittent nature of the failure but it seemed to clear when I accelerated and fail upon breaking, slowing down or going down hill. This seems like the exact opposite of when you'd want your airbags to become disabled.

29 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2017

Whenever someone sits in the passenger seat, the service airbag indicator comes on. Dealer reviewed codes and determined the airbag sensor is faulty. The service tech stated the passenger airbag will not inflate until this is repaired at a cost of $850. 00. There are only 56,000 miles on the car, but the problem started around 40,000 miles.

30 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

Passenger seat airbag sensor intermittently malfunctioning causing airbag to disable while passenger is present in the vehicle. Vehicle presents service airbag message in the dashboard and passenger airbag indicator is set to off.

31 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2016

Passenger seat occupancy sensor intermittent failure. Should be added to investigation pe19013. Airbag light and service airbag message is on 7 out of 10 times the car is turned on and no passenger or item is in the passenger seat(while stationary). Light will turn off after several minutes of driving or applying force to the bottom of the empty passenger seat. Driving with a passenger the light is usually off, however sometimes it will come on with a passenger present and vehicle in motion, and can be resolved by the passenger shifting their weight a few times. Issue is too hard to demonstrate to dealer and would cost too much for me to bother repairing on my own. Other models from Chevrolet during that time period use the same sensor and have been recalled or are pending a recall. This problem first started when I purchased the car in 2016 but much more infrequently. It has become more and more common gradually ever since. Seat has not had anything spilled on it, or rain let in from open windows etc.

32 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2016

Within a year of owning the car the passenger airbag sensor is apparently failing. My check airbag light turns on and off when passengers or mild or heavy objects are sitting in the seat or even shifting position in the seat makes the check airbag notification appear on driver information screen. It's an annoying notification at least. And not sure if all the airbags will deploy if the need to. I've addressed this before without word from this government organization.

33 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2016

Service air bag light illuminated around 40k miles. Has been on since. Code is saying the passenger presence module to be bad. I believe this is the case as I can press on the seat very hard with my knee and sometimes get the module to sense the weight, however when seated normally it never senses a passenger, and I am 185 pounds.

34 Air Bag Light On problem

Failure Date: 09/02/2015

My airbag light on the dash has been on for a very long time now and I just read an article the other day that thousands of complaints have been made over this same issue. I have a snap-on scanner for reading obd2 ports on a large amount of vehicles and when I plug mine up to my Volt it tells me it is the sensor in the seat. I have already replaced this sensor once. The dealer tried to rob me in trying to charge me over 800. 00 for this very simple repair. Needless to say it is out yet again and gm knows there are scores of problems with the Volt but they wont properly address them. I had a 2017 Volt that caught fire and burnt to the ground. What did they do about it? not a damn thing. I sincerely hope the feds make them do something to address this vehicle as lives are on the line.
