Airbag warning light and "service airbag soon" appears on dash. Vehicle is not in motion or is in low-speed travel only when light/ notification appears. Light/ notification disappears within a few seconds. Issue only appears to happen when temperature inside vehicle is extremely high (leading me to believe that expansion of cushion/ seat material in high heat may be causing weak contact activations. G-force when accelerating/ decelerating may be causing sensor/ seat material to move/ shift in such a way to release weak contact). Brought to dealer for $200 diagnosis. Reported problem as passenger seat next-gen airbag sensor module failing. Cost to repair $1200+ reviewed many online forums and posts returning same issue and cost for repair for Chevrolet vehicles in same model and platform range (malibu, impala, Volt, cruze).
A warning light appears sporadically reporting that the passenger airbag needs to be serviced. If the passenger wiggles around, the airbag will turn on and the warning light goes out.

I am getting an airbag warning light caused by a faulty passenger presence module. If I have a passenger riding with me, the warning light will go on and off sometimes caused by hitting bumps in the road. When the light is on though, it says the passenger airbag is off which is a very big safety concern. The vehicle has never been in a wreck or had any liquid spilled on the seat.

Passenger front seat occupancy sensor malfunctions which triggers the air bag warning light and disables the passenger front air bags. This randomly occurs when no one is in the seat and it will happen if the seat is occupied and the person in the seat moves.
Passenger airbag warning light on 2013 Volt started going on and off a few months after purchasing the car. Continued to get more frequent over time until it stayed on consistently. Took to gm dealer on 9/5/18 at 37,944 mileage and paid $130 for diagnosis. Dealer stated the passenger present sensor needed replacement, the repair was out of warranty and quoted an additional $1082. 26 to repair. Since it was a safety component of the car, I complained to gm management directly under a case#, but they refused to repair on 10/12/18. Still a serious concern today at 54,183 mileage. And the warning beeping sound continues almost constantly while driving the car. Very annoying. The air bag is not on even when a passenger is in the front seat. Very dangerous situation in the event of an accident, and should be recalled and fixed by gm. I don't want to take passengers in the car because I fear for their safety. The car has 120k miles on it. The issue is present in all driving and parked situations. I have read on many forms online, that this is a pretty prevalent issue with many Volt owners and is in definitely need of some attention. The issue started back in the beginning of 2018 and is still a problem as of Jan 2020. The cost to fix the issue is too prohibitive for me.
The vehicle would issue a warning ding with a dashboard indicator saying, "service airbag. " the dashboard airbag warning light would then illuminate. The warning would remain on for several minutes, then the warning light would extinguish. Initially the warning light would only illuminate when a passenger was riding in the front passenger seat, and even then would only happen infrequently. Over a six month period of time the airbag warning would occur more frequently, and eventually would illuminate even when a passenger was not in the vehicle. The dealership blamed the condition on either 1) the seat getting wet and damaging the sensor (which has never happened), or 2) the repeated act of placing my 10-20lb laptop backpack on the passenger seat (wouldn't a 200 lb passengers be more likely to damage a sensor than a 20lb backpack?).
Airbag warning light due to seat sensor has been on since 40000 miles. Took it to dealer and they said it's out of warranty will cost 1000. At the time the warning was frequent but intermittent. Now the warning is all of the time. Multiple Volt owners online have complained about this issue. Please investigate.
Paid dealer $160 to find out passenger presence module had failed. They're asking for another $820 (mostly labor) to fix the issue by replacing with part #22968438 in the passenger seat. . . So I'm driving around with a bad airbag I guess. Can't see spending 1000. 00 right now to fix a blinking warning light. I see on the web that others are also having this problem, and wonder how many Volt owners are driving with bad airbags waiting for a recall to be announced. Seems like a part that just shouldn't have much wear-and-tear, and should maybe never become an expensive repair issue. Engine, tranny, tires, etc. - sure. But not the dang airbag system. Passenger seat presence sensor is faulty, causing "service airbag" warnings and airbag warning light to illuminate. Problem is intermittent, but once sensor is tripped, errors and warning messages appear until vehicle is powered off. Happens frequently - many times per day. I don't know if this issue is actually affecting the airbag's functionality. I have learned that this is an expensive repair - about $500 for the sensor, and $500 for labor. There are many others with 2013 Volts who are experience this problem this should be fixed under warranty, as this is a safety issue that has been happening on my car for years.
The passenger presence sensor failed in my Volt several years ago. Since it's no longer under warranty, the dealer quoted me $1000 to fix this issue. This is a critical safety issue and chevy should recall these because it's a very common problem. The airbag is often not activated when I have a passenger due to the fact that the sensor has failed and can't sense a person in the seat. Critical safety issue! not to mention, the airbag warning light is intermittent and extremely obnoxious beeping multiple times every time I drive now. This seat has never been wet and the car has never been in an accident. Also, I rarely have passengers.
