33 problems related to front air bag sensor control have been reported for the 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Began having intermittent "service airbag" warnings. Finally failed solid. Dealer diagnosed the problem to be a short circuit in the passenger present sensor in the passenger seat. Repair cost $1100. I declined repair. Dealer said this fault makes the entire airbag system inoperable. Tried to buy the repair part and was informed by an online gm parts source it was on national backorder. No idea when it will be available. This seems like a critical safety issue and a common problem in chevy vehicles. A recall should be issued.
Passenger front seat sensor for airbag system malfunctions, resulting in passenger airbag being turned off while adult passenger is in seat. This occurs when the vehicle is moving or stationary and both in town and on the highway. Dealer indicated this repair would cost nearly $1000 (~$500 in parts and over $400 labor).
The vehicle airbag service continually goes on while driving and in park. There has been no spills or related issues with the seat but the sensor has obviously malfunctioned.
Faulty air bag sensor.
The passenger detection sensor failed which affects functionality of passenger airbag. For some reason this wasn't covered covered under extended warranty.
The airbag sensor warning for the front passenger seat goes off every time I drive regardless if there is a person occupying the seat or not. Have been to the dealer who says it is out of warranty but that the airbags work fine and the only repair is to replace the seat sensor for $1000. Question is will the airbags work properly or not in the event of a crash?? I hear there is an investigation open for this issue pe19013.
There's a persistent issue with the airbag sensor for the passenger seat, where it will either 1) give an error warning when no one is in the seat, or 2) temporarily not register the presence of a passenger in the seat. In the latter instance the airbag is temporarily taken offline while a person is actually in the seat, and it turns on and off whenever the passenger shifts their weight. These error warnings occur with every start up of the vehicle.
I recently noticed in my chevy Volt passenger airbag sensor problems. Passenger front seat sensor for airbag system malfunctions, resulting in passenger airbag being turned off while adult passenger is in seat. This occurs when the vehicle is moving or stationary and both in town and on the highway.
The passenger airbag sensor triggered a warning (vehicle in motion). Took vehicle to dealer and they tried the typical loose connection check, water damage check, etc. Removed sensor and tested it - not pulling any current, so must be bad and need replacement. Total cost to replace $1,200!! if it's not replaced, airbags are disabled to protect against accidental deployment. I decided to pass and pretend that the car was built in the 1970s (ie, no airbags and just relying on seatbelts).
An apparent failure of the passenger seat occupancy sensor prevents correct operation of the airbag system. When a light object is on the seat, or when a passenger exits the seat, a service airbag system light comes on and persists until the next vehicle power cycle. The problem is intermittent. Initial research points to the seat sensor as the culprit, but the repair is outlandishly expensive, and prevents owners from seeking the repair, especially when the dealer cannot guarantee that the repair will succeed.
Service air bag system message comes up on dash briefly and goes away again quickly. After some research online, I'm finding this is most likely cause by the passenger seat airbag sensor or seat occupancy sensor. It has only happened in our Volt when I had a front seat passenger so this makes complete sense. This is a very common issue on 2012, 2013 and 2014 chevy Volts at least and should be recalled and repaired by gm. This is a safety issue. The repair is around $800 and that should not be the case with a safety issue on many vehicles u see 100k miles. We have 81k on ours. I saw the issue happened to other Volts in my research as low as 27k miles. When this happens, I have just started the vehicle, it is stationary and people are getting into seats and buckling belts. Longest the message has come on was about 45sec with most occurrences more like 10-15 sec before message clears. This were all in suburb type settings and not the first use of the day for the vehicle but rather later on in day second or more use for the day.
Airbag weight sensor issues on passenger side.
Passenger airbag sensor, being triggered intermittently. Sensor is contained within the passenger seat. Sensor is question is called a passeneger presence system module.
Just paid $975 to have the passenger air bag sensor replaced on my 2013 chevy Volt. I was informed by the gm Volt thread that this a manufacturing issue with the chevy Volts and is happening to many Volt owners.
The airbag sensor stopped working causing the passenger airbag to be turned off.
Passenger seat unoccupied will alert airbag sensor warning display.
Service airbag warning pops up when passenger is seated and moves in seat. Sometimes turns off their airbag. Recently within the past year the driver side is also malfunctioning saying to service due to seat sensors. Vehicle can be stationary or driving when this occurrs.
The passenger airbag wont work because the sensor in the seat is broken. Chevy is charging over $1,000 to repair. There has never been an accident. It happened out of nowhere. When reading online this is happening to a lot of people and the repair cost is extremely high for something that is completely chevy's fault.
Faulty passenger air bag sensor after warranty.
Service airbag message is on. Common problem for this car. The previous owner replaced an airbag sensor, and the problem has returned.
Passenger air bag seat occupancy sensor intermittent function at 52k miles. Would disable passenger air bag randomly whether moving or stationary. Had dealer serviced, which replaced passenger seat occupancy sensor, for $1086.
Air bag passenger seat occupancy sensor failure. When there is no passenger in the seat the air bag warning lite comes on. When an adult is in the seat the light does not come on unless the person moves around, then it comes on and then resets itself.
The passenger airbag seatbelt sensor faulty and gives notice on display. Intermittently stops turning on passenger airbag when someone is sitting in it. I has been doing this for about 3 years and does it everytime while driving. I have seen hundreds of posts online with the same issue. This is the second time I have filed this same complaint with no response.
Passenger pressence module sensor gets detoriated when the passenger seat moves back and forth. Basically ruining the too short wiring connecting to the sensors. This makes the airbag nondeployable. The computer thinks no one is sitting there, essentially. This occurred while driving and goes on and off, but has stayed on consistently.
Tl the contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that the air bag wiring connection under the seat had a short, which caused the sensor mat not to function. Henderson Chevrolet (240 n gibson rd, henderson, nv 89014, 702-558-2438) was notified. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The manufacturer issued three tsbs for the air bags. The failure mileage was not available.
Sensor in passenger seat goes bad giving air bag error.
Service passenger airbag warning came on continuously. Two trips to the dealer, first time they tried to fix by cleaning a connection $196 and it did not work. Second time they had to replace the passenger presence sensor $636. 70. This was not covered under warranty I was told. Car had 68514 miles and was in service 4 years.
My sensor on the passenger seat is faulty my airbag service light keeps on turning on and off consistently. Never had an accident or spills on the seat.
Passenger airbag sensor light came on and turns on and off randomly whether or not passenger is occupying the passenger seat. Unsafe if there is an accident as airbags won't deploy.
My airbag sensor intermittently comes in and off. I took it to a Chevrolet dealership and they said it was the passenger seat airbag sensor and that it would cost about $900. I have read on a Volt forum that this is happening to many of us. This should be covered by gm.
Passenger seat belt sensor went bad and was required to be replaced by gm.
At 40,000 miles approximately, the check airbag sensor light came up. The dealer said that because it was out of the 36,000 mile warranty, it was not covered and it would be about $850 and there would be no guarantee that the sensor change would fix it. I refused the work for that price. I have driven another 135,000 miles and it is still on. Safety has been reduced due to the high charge for a manufacturing defect.
"service airbag" sensor issue on the 2013 chevy Volt. Is seems to be a common issue per the prior complaints I see. As stated by others, no water damage or anything has occured on the passenger side of my vehicle. In fact, I've only had people actually ride in the passenger seat 5 times in total in all the years that I've had it. So basically it isn't used. The issue is an airbag / sensor issue and there should be a recall by chevy to fix said issue! as others have stated. It does come and come but has been more frequent as of late even though the car passenger seat is not used!.
