The contact owns a 2017 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated that the vehicle was lagging and hesitating before accelerating. The contact stated that an excessive amount of pressure was needed to depress the accelerator pedal while driving. The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced reduced hybrid propulsion. The contact stated that the check engine warning light was illuminated. The failure was intermittent. The vehicle had not been taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 140,000.
While making a 90 mile drive on 7/20, after having depleted the primary battery charge and switched to hybrid mode, a "propulsion power is reduced" warning appeared on the console, along with the check engine light. Other than somewhat reduced power (max displayed of ~40-50 kw), performance otherwise seemed unimpeded. Contacted local dealership to schedule service for earliest available date of 7/26. Car made return 90 mile trip on 7/21 without issue additional issue ("propulsion power is reduced" message remained. ) service identified "numerous codes", but replaced a fuse known to result in the above issue and observed no other issues. Car was driven purely on battery at that time, and for the intervening time until a 170 mile drive on 8/2, where the message and check engine light reappeared, again after battery charge was consumed and car switched to hybrid power mode. Dealership was again contacted to schedule service, slated for the morning of 8/7 (tomorrow, as of this writing). Car reached its destination without further incident. During return 170 mile trip on 8/5, traveling on the highway, car abruptly alerted that the engine was no longer available and entered a severely reduced-power mode. Car had been operating in "mountain mode" (conserving some extra battery charge) as a precaution, so we were able safely exit the highway and pull into a local parking lot, at which point aaa was contacted to tow the car the remaining 120 miles home. Upon arriving home, the car was able to pull into the garage without the "engine not available" alert, but still displaying check engine light and "propulsion power reduced" messages. We have come to understand this is a fairly common issue with generation ii Volts and have been advised by other owners to file this report.
In what appears to be (based on google search) hundreds of Volts have the failure whereby the erg valve fails, but gm is no longer making the part and has an indefinite date to produce them. When this part fails the engine light comes on the the vehicle is not allowed to go over 45 mph, creating a safety issue when on highways (I live rural, all all roads are over >=55 mph). Gm is unwilling to trade the car at fair value for a new one, nor willing to provide loaners. So the car can only sit in the garage with no resolution. Gm is aware of the issue, nut is unwilling to address.
7/6/2024 was driving 45 mph on a busy road (running only on the gas engine of this plug-in hybrid). Propulsion power reduced message showed near the speedometer. My speed was immediately decreased. The check engine light also came on. Despite pressing the gas pedal, the speed could not be maintained and I had to pull off quickly before causing an accident. Luckily, no accident occurred but I fear would could have happened if I wasn't in the right place to pull over quickly. After getting the car towed to a chevy dealership, they diagnosed the problem as being with the hybrid battery - it needs to be replaced. I don't understand why I had a full tank of gas, was running on gas, and that a bad ev battery would cause all propulsion to stop so quickly.

On December 2023 the vehicle lost power and lost control while driving speed limit 55 mph followed by check engine light associated codes due to known issue with bcem controller failing. June 2024 vehicle experienced the same issue with duplicate check engine codes associated with prior issue. Dealer states the vehicle has a bad battery pack and has been there for over 8 months. Vehicle has a becm warranty due to a law suite filed and also has a battery pack warranty from gm that was extended for 150,000 miles or 10 years.
Faulty micro-switch from factory, causes power surge. Flawed microswitch in transaxle shift cable. Incomplete connection of microswitch resulting higher Voltage to pcm. (power control module) this irregularity, shows a dtc code reducing power propulsion during movement. The car will loose power & ability to shift. During driving movement. Quite a safety concern. A "shift to park" error displays on driver display screen. An obd2 scanner will clear code & after a few attempts remain operational. However intermittent & unpredictable when to expect the loss of traction power.

Mileage: 38523 engine not available service soon propulsion power is reduced fuel range low: 3/4 tank full of gas Saturday, June 1, 2024 - I was driving northbound on the I-680 south of castlewood in northern California. I was driving 70 mph when I suddenly received the error messages above on my dashboard screen. The vehicle immediately had power from 70 mph quickly going below 59 mph. The traffic was extremely high and I had to quickly use my hazard flashes and carefully manuever to the right shoulder of the frwy. The vehicle lost power so quickly I could have easily been rear ended or in a serious vehicle accident. The dealer test drove the vehicle and stated they received the errors at 95 mph. The dealership is recommending I have the entire transmission replaced with the assembly and the 45,000 mile maintenance. No other warning lamps, messages or symptoms or failures occurred. First occurrence June 1, 2024.

Started vehicle with > 50mi on the ev-range. Pulled out onto road, stopped at red light. Now showed 0mi and refused to move when pressing the gas (did not fail over to gas on series phev) garbage truck coming up behind me had to swerve to avoid rear-ending me as I was frantically trying to start the car. Kept saying 'shift to park' (condition required to start the vehicle) took several minutes and 20+ tries before I got it to start (gas engine) and was able to proceed. Car keeps randomly dropping to 0mi ev range. Has refused ot start on occasion. All symptoms align with the n232432680 bulletin but gm saying my car isn't covered???.
Vehicle propolusion reduced and engine not available messages were suddenly showing. Check engine light turned on. Suddenly stalled/stopped in the middle of highway. Safety concerns.
The car states the battery will not charge and cannot move the car. I connected it to a code reader with the following codes showing: p1e00 u2618 u2606 u2605 u2617 u2604.
2016 chevy Volt started to not shut off with the message that car needed to shift to park. Car is just over 100,000 miles (104,000) spent a few weeks jiggling shifter to get car turned off then made an appointment at platinum chevy of santa rosa. While waiting we researched the issue to find that the shift to park is a known issue and the Volt has in fact been named in a class action suit. Am currently at crossroad as I cannot get gm to stand behind their product. It’s taken four calls and an escalation to management to find out that they may offer a percentage to fix the problem but because we’re out of warranty it is a customer problem. So, to cap it off, gm has sold us a vehicle with a known safety issue with no recall and will not fix their problem.
My 2018 chevy Volt displayed a warning message of "propulsion power is reduced" on the dash when I started the car in a parking garage on Saturday, March 9th around 10am. The car would not drive normally and made a strange noise. I had to stop and start the car six or so times before it drove normally for me to get home. Had this happened at high speed, it could have caused an accident or worse. I contacted the local rockville, MD Chevrolet dealership and they ran the diagnostic test on the becm and hpcm2 systems and performed battery capacity reset. I do not believe this software reset will correct the technical issue. According to the dealership records, such a software reset was performed in 2021 by the previous owner before we purchased the car second hand in July, 2022. The dealer would not replace the becm unit but there is supposedly a special coverage bulletin issued by general motors. We need the unit replaced ASAP for safety.

Driving at freeway speeds when suddenly the cars propulsion power failed and I went from 75mph to 45mph with no warning and no way to accelerate. Happened multiple times even after pulling over and turning the car on and off. I was told by the dealership that was a gas engine part and that I could drive it on the electrical engine only. When attempting to drive on the electrical engine, I received a notice of engine failure and had to coast into the driveway of a dealership. I was told the engine “could explode” if I continue to drive it.
I got the “propulsion power is reduced” warning at ~83. 5k miles on the odometer, while visiting friends 4 hours from home. Pulled over and called 3 local dealerships and all servicing departments are closed on Sunday so knew there was nothing I could do except try to limp back to my friends house safely and reevaluate. On the 20 minute drive back, the engine cut out on the freeway and the car immediately started slowing down. I coasted to the next freeway exit safely with my hazards on. The scary part was that I had no power after the ”engine unavailable” warning popped up since the battery was completely drained already. I was able to get it towed to the closest chevy dealership and leave the keys for them. I am waiting to hear the official diagnosis from the dealership once they take a look. The cause is still unknown but this sounds like a similar series of events for becm failure.

The dealer informed the contact that parts were on backorder. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 69,000.
Driving on the road with a near full electric battery and then lost most of my power and got this message on the dash along with a check engine light. "propulsion power is reduced" - I was in freeway traffic on a hill and had to put hazards on to move to the slow lane. Engine came on and seemed to be revving to full power to maintain speed.
Becm failure on car confirmed at 128,000 miles. While driving the car's check engine light came on; immediately followed by a message of reduced propulsion and the ev range dropping to 0. Vehicle switched to gas and ran very rough for a short distance to an available stop. Have been informed by dealership that the vehicle is now unsafe for driving due to a potential stall.
'11 chevy Volt hybrid was daily driver of 100+ miles, multiple trips both highway and city for last 2 1/2 months. Breaks and rotors have been replaced all the way around, fresh oil changes as needed and filters. Warning on dash "service high Voltage charging system", ”service airbag" and check engine light have been on since I've owned it (oct. 23). When plug car in it doesn't charge, but the ev charges while driving. Car generally switches back and forth from ev to ice without issues. No other issues have been noted. 1/18/24 start car and drive all day for work. Total of 129 miles between 22 trips. Last trip car sat for 30 minutes after running deliveries all day. Started as normal, turned off at gas station, filled tank with premium, restarted and drive to freeway. Drove 20 miles, pulled over to text, put car in park. 5 mins later took out of park and car wouldn't move. Inside had complete power, radio, windows, ect. Only noticable difference was car would get no acceleration, power steering went out, and heat started blowing cooler air. Absolutely no warning and car just cuts off engines. Thankfully I was parked safe. Towed home, replaced 12v. Started and drove no problem on 1/19/24. No new warnings or anything different. Started up 1/20/24 drove 7 miles and the engines cut off in the middle of a main road while accelerating, once again no warning. Luckily got into turn lane before almost getting hit. Still not sure what's wrong with car. Same codes. No battery warning or loss of power indication at all. Just up and cuts off. This is very very dangerous and needs to be looked into please. When my Volt died today the truck behind me had to slam on his brakes and came inches from hitting me. If this would've happen on the freeway, I'd likely been hit.

I was traveling at 75 mph with the cruise control on when a message came on about reduced purpulsion. My vehicle lost all power and rapidly decreased speed, the gas pedal did nothing until my speed had dropped under 60 mph. I was on the freeway and could have caused an accident. Chevrolet says a programming update was needed to fix the problem but my becm is now also out.
My becm failed pulling in to my grandpas house. I was able to park the car, but unable to start it afterwords. Prior to failure, the engine would switch between electric, then back to gas, then back to electric this is a very common issue on these vehicles. I am fortunate this did not occur on the highway, as I had just exited I 94.
The Volts becm has failed. There are warning lights constantly warning about engine and low propulsion. There are multiple symptoms. Most serious is that car has stalled while driving 3 times. If I pull over, put in park, then turn off; I can restart the engine using battery mode. It does not drive well in gas mode where gas fuels generator to charge battery for propulsion. It is now very loud and often won't allow you to drive faster than 30 mph. The mileage diagnostics (mpg) are just over 50% of what they were before problem started. It often randomly switches from battery mode to gas. This is undesired. My problem is that the only certified tech is on other side of island volcano. I have no confidence that I can drive it to dealer, given the distance and power required to climb mountain. So, I am stuck with no way to fix. There are widespread reported issues, similar to mine, caused by defective becm (battery energy control module). Problem started September 2023 and have issues every day I dare drive it.
My car will lose all power as I'm driving, switch between gas/ elec and almost stall, it will accelerate when I take my foot off the gas , it will lose power on a turn. . It's random. Form what I understand it's the becm and it happened just after 100k miles. I have 105k.
My 2013 Volt will not charge or start. This happened suddenly. It has been working fine.

I was driving my plugin hybrid Volt on a highway when the engine stalled and the engine light turned on. I tap the throttle a few times to get it to stay on. It worked, but I had to continue to tap the throttle to keep it going. It also revved up sharply when it was in low gear. The vehicle was out of battery, so it was as running on engine.
The latest episode with my 2017 chevy Volt is a culmination of years of issues with the low clearance on the vehicle causing continual damage and unsafe driving conditions that require expensive repairs due to the design flaw (note - I had a 2014 chevy Volt that had none of these problems). My son was driving the car a week ago and the engine control module (gm part # 12700116) fell out of the car. This led to the car to stop driving instantly - if he had been anywhere other than a quiet residential street it could have been catastrophic. Upon having towed the vehicle to the dealership, I was informed that the wiring harness failed which led to the ecm falling onto the street. I drive this car strictly in city limits and on major highways, and despite this the bottom undercarriage is constantly damaged because it is simply to low to the ground. In addition to the repair bill of $3k+ (my 4th repair required due to this defect), the harness isn't even available and gm cannot provide an eta for when it will be. I experienced a similar issue 6 months ago when a part was backordered for 3+ months and this is compounded by the fact that their dealerships no longer have loan car inventory. Note that there was no warning before this happened. I have tried escalating to gm but their response is essentially that I am sol. Again - this is a design flaw of the vehicle that should have been addressed but never was. Note that this doesn't include the other continual issues (well documented) that continue to plague the car after other recall service (loss of propulsion, shifter issues that frequently make it impossible to actually turn the car off, etc. ).
Upon starting vehicle and shifting to drive, vehicle gives message to "shift to park" and will do nothing else. Also, while battery is fully charged, vehicle will display "unable to charge" and show no mileage left on ev mode - then at times (but not always) upon starting vehicle, mileage increases to what it expected.
In June of 2023 the car experienced propulsion power reduction. The car was at the dealer awaiting repair for 3 weeks. On Dec. 14,2023 the same thing happened again. The car was also unable to accelerate once mobile. The car has about 90k miles on it.
This car is connected to bouncie a device that detects when a car turns on and off, the speed, if break or acceletor are stepped on forcefully and any trips. Recently the device is detecting the engine is turned off but the car is showing no signs of struggling and its in full motion. This is new, I've tested the device in another car for two weeks hoping it was the device but I had no issues on the other vehicle. The images is just one of several occasions. The image shows green dot where car starts and red where car is turned off. However, I never turned off my car at the demaree rd that day. I feel like the car is losing power and starts back up while in motion.

The vehicle will lose power without warning on a regular basis. The vehicle will also accelerate unexpectedly when switching from battery to engine power at speeds under 50 mph. I have taken the vehicle to the dealer and have been informed there is nothing they can do for me, the vehicle does not have any faulty components.
Driving 72mph down i5 interstate the display notified me with a check engine light with two errors, enigne propulsion reduced and engine overheating. I pulled over to the side of the road and called a tow. This was a very traumatic event. I had my partner and my 2 year old daughter in the car. I just purchased this used vehicle from a Toyota dealer the same day. It has 63k miles on it and still under powertrain warranty. I literally drove the car 45 miles. Total. I have spent more time towing and fixing this car than actually driving it. This is a total lemon. I need a refund from gm and all the pain and suffering that this caused my family.
Any time the car switches from battery to gasoline the 12v battery comes on, I get the message to shift into park, and the car shuts off. This happens multiple times a day, making it difficult to drive long distance. It also makes it difficult to work more than a couple of hours at a time as an uber driver. It has happened on the highway, very dangerous.

I was driving on a road at roughly 50 mph when suddenly without warming, the screen and everything shut off and went black in the vehicle, and then immediately turned back on, this time with the engine light on. In the following seconds, the gas pedal completely stopped responding, and I had to coast to a stop at the side of the road. It was a dangerous spot on the road to have this happen. I was able to power the vehicle off, and then back on again, and the vehicle functioned normally immediately afterwards, with no engine light on.
While driving to work, the vehicle shook a bit and entered into "reduced propulsion mode". The vehicle had a significant reduction in engine power on the road (the propulsion became very jerky), which became dangerous on the highway. There were no previous indicators of any type of issue. After brining the vehicle to the dealership, I was told it would be okay to drive until my appointment (which was scheduled for the subsequent week). Two days later, the vehicle would not start. When attempting to start the car, the "shift to park" message displayed. I had to get the vehicle towed to the dealership at that point. The dealership mentioned it is likely an issue with the battery energy control module (becm). However, I'm still waiting for a resolution.
