37 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 05/19/2013

Engine stalled for first time less than 2 miles after fill up at 25 mph on city street. Immediately loss power assist of both steering and brakes. Car weights 4040 lbs and I had a difficult time pulling into a parking lot and getting the car stopped. Car was immediately restarted. No future problems until nearly every refill when it stalls within first few seconds or 2 miles. Car now has 79550 miles. My wife drives this most frequently but I always fill the gas tank. I told her when it stalls, steer straight, put car in neural, restart, and hope you do not have to stop quickly. In NHTSA action number pe13016 Chrysler's [xxx] letter Aug 9, 2013 last page 17 states "if a stall after refuel conditions occurs, the vehicle has functioning steering and brake systems". True but with out power assist on steering and brakes car is very difficult to control. Most women and small men would have difficulty safely stopping car. Chrysler concludes this issue poses and minor risk to vehicle safety. I am a retired mechanical engineer and worked 40 years with power trains and strongly disagree. In this review vehicles 5, 6, and 7 all had problems with swollen refueling floats allowing the floats to stick and not function properly. All three cars were 2006 300c with 5. 7 liter hemi engines the same as mine. . On a11. Page 15, Chrysler acknowledges the vent valves was changed for my 2007. This appears to acknowledge a poor or faulty design in my 2006. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

38 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 05/05/2013

My vehicle will stall out on me intermittently. It mostly happens right after I get finished putting gas in my car. Unlike most other stories I've read about overfilling the gas tank, this happens to me sometimes when I put just a half of a tank of gas in my car. Now, as of Nov. 7, 2013, it's done it well over 100 times; that's since the first time it happened in may. The dealership is a complete scam. They know this is a defect. They've charged me to fix everything from egr valves to pcms to spark plugs. Nothing has worked. Then finally I decide to do some deep research, that's when I decided to file my complaint. There are 2 major issues I have. When at highway speeds, I'll lose all power and throttle response for a split second, then it'll kick back in. It's extremely dangerous, to say the least. The more frequent problem, is the car completely cutting off while either at idle, or traveling at a lower speed. Both situations happen almost always directly after I put gas in my car. This happens so much that it is becoming unbearable. Sometime it starts back up, and sometimes I have to wait a minute or two. It's ridiculous. I don't mind paying to have my car serviced. However, diagnose the problem, know that's the problem, and let's get it fixed. Don't run me through $3,000 worth of repairs, knowing that you've got countless others with the same model and model year, coming in around the same time, complaining about the same problem. You know what it is. That's no coincidence. And quite frankly, it's fraudulent. I've got my 5 year old son riding in the back seat. What happens the next time my car stalls out on the highway and loses power, with another car tailgating me? what if it's a tractor trailer next time? will they have enough time to brake or plow into the back of me? more unnecessary stress and worry for the loyal consumer. Thanks Chrysler.

39 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 05/04/2013

After re-fueling, the vehicle experiences multiple stall conditions while on the road. This condition has occurred multiple times and can occur both while driving and while stopped at a light. I've noticed that this more frequently occurs when you fill up the tank to the point that the auto shut off on the gas nozzle is tripped. The car gives no warning that its about to experience an issue until the car completely shuts off, most likely while you're already on the road. Right now the only way to combat this problem is to not fill up the car more than 3/4 of the tank. This method keeps the driver guessing as to how much gas should be pumped, and causes more frequent fill ups as you're not using 1/4 of the gas tank capacity. This is a very dangerous condition, and its one that should be communicated to all 300c owners immediately.

40 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 05/02/2013

Engine stalled and stopped working as coming out of gas station after filling up. Steering went hard and brakes did not work, warning light (lube oil can) came up. Turned ignition off and on again, engine started but kept stalling. Jerks violently when moving slowly 0 to 20 mph , the engine continued to stall during deceleration or when stopped for the next 3 miles. Stalling occurs within minutes after refueling and will stall 2-3 times in a 5 minute period. The vehicle performs correctly once you get past this stage. Multiple occurrences - all after filling tank.

41 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 04/07/2013

Vehicle stalled while turning into a parking lot within 3 miles after refueling (full tank). Fortunately, no other vehicles were ahead of me, and I was able to safely coast into a parking space straight ahead. As described by other owners, I lost all power "everything" steering, etc. Vehicle restarted after a brief period, and I was able to drive home. Took the vehicle to the dealership for repairs. Dealership immediately suspected the trouble was related to a full fuel tank and failing vapor vent valve in the fuel tank. I'm paraphrasing here but as I understood it, liquid fuel was breaching the vent valve when typically only vapors are vented. Remedy: replace the fuel tank. An expensive solution for what is seemingly a defect experienced by many owners. The fuel tank had to be special ordered, and once the part arrived, I was to bring the vehicle back with as little fuel as possible in the tank. On more than one occasion, I couldn't time the return to the dealership with my appointment so I had to refuel the vehicle. I purposely did not fill the fuel tank to full, and consequently, did not experience any subsequent stalling until I could return the vehicle for servicing.

42 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 01/15/2013

In January 2013, I filed a vehicle safety complaint here about my v8 engine stalling after fuel refill (gasoline tank replacement repair bill was $1540. 93). The NHTSA office of defects investigation soon opened investigation pe13016 into the fuel tank problem. The odi information request to Chrysler cited numerous complaints, including mine. Investigation pe13016 was closed earlier this year by NHTSA because the "condition is adequately addressed by Chrysler's extended warranty" on 2006 Chrysler 300 fuel tanks. The closing summary refers to Chrysler sending letters to owners about the extended warranty. Since I did not receive an owner letter, I today called the Chrysler customer assistance center, 1-800-247-9753. The assistance center representative told me that my vehicle is not within the extended warranty because my vehicle (built within the extended warranty time frame) contained a gas tank with the sales code "nsks" and that the extended warranty only covers cars built with the gas tank sales code "nsk. " nothing in the materials posted online with pe13016 indicate that there are two different gas tanks, only one of which had problems. Please, reconsider whether the Chrysler response is adequate. My vehicle, with the "nsks" gas tank, clearly suffered the refill stalling problem addressed in pe 13016.

43 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 01/12/2013

After refueling the vehicle to a full tank of fuel vehicle stalls and sometimes becomes very hard to restart. Once the fuel tank level goes down a little the problem goes away. This always occurs after refueling to a full tank of fuel.

44 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

After filling the vehicle with fuel (not topping off the tank) the car stalled upon leaving the gas station. I was able to restart it after several times but the risk is incredible! the car stalls without warning as traffic was all around me honking and I was nearly being hit from behind!! once was a fluke I thought and maybe bad gas. I was able to carefully navigate on back streets to the house and never had the problem again until the next fill up. Again I had the stalling problem, lucky for me I had picked a light traffic time to fill up. I switched gas stations after that an now only get gas at shell stations hearing that they had the best gas quality overall. The problem has continued since then every time I fill the tank full. The stalling problem seems to be occurring now two needle widths below the full mark which means something is getting worse. The local Chrysler dealership says that there is no recall and the fix is to replace the gas tank due to a faulty value at the top of the tank. The cost is $1,315. The risk of getting hit from behind at any speed is incredible and very real!! I believe Chrysler should replace the faulty tanks.

45 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 10/24/2012

Car stalls after filling at gas station due to flooding or other issue. Dealer would not admit its a problem. Happened approx 4 times where I stalled in traffic and almost was rear ended. Had to drive vehicle in parking lot accelerating 8 times to burn off fuel before it was safe to drive while car shuddered. Cannot fill up tank anymore. Was told I need a new tank but there was a 6 month back order due to all the people requesting new tanks.

46 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 10/02/2012

After fill up at gas station ( not topping off), when leaving and coming to a stop at an intersection, car will shut off and have to crank two or three times to start again. It will do this several more times after coming to a stop, once on the road or freeway it will run like nothing is wrong. Once fuel level drops enough it will no longer stall when coming to a stop. Have read in forums that the problem is more than likely a valve that is built in into the tank, making this an expensive fix.

47 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 09/12/2012

Our 2006 Chrysler 300c dies after fueling the gas tank to full. It has died in intersections were we have almost been run into and in turns where is locks up and there is no power anything and have almost crashed. We have taken it to the dealership and continuously pay money to fix what they think it is and now for the third time they are asking for almost 1800 dollars to replace the tank. I can definitely see how this is a major problem and a huge safety issue.

48 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 09/01/2012

Engine stalls after filling the tank. On at least four occasions vehicle would stall within 20 miles of completely filling tank. After second incident vehicle taken to Chrysler dealer for a tune-up, however problem persisted. This occurred once while entering a public parking lot with loss of power steering and brakes fortunately the car at low speed and rolled to a stop before striking anything. On another occasion this happened while pulling away from a traffic light in heavy traffic nearly causing the vehicle to be struck from behind. Temporary fix is to no longer completely fill the tank, guessing at about 3/4 tank to stop fueling. Partially filling the tank is not a proper solution. This is a recurring problem and needs to be investigated and recalled.

49 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 03/15/2012

After fueling, car began to surge, and then die at random for approximately 5 minutes. Car stalled at major, busy intersection while I was turning. I had a near, potentially fatal accident as I had to restart my car while oncoming traffic coming towards me. This was a horrifying experience. I had this happen a few more times and had attributed it to "bad gas" until I found out about a faulty fuel tank/vapor part in car. I took the car to Chrysler dealership and paid $130. 00 to diagnose problem. Rode with service technician to refuel car and show him the problem. He experienced the same issue, verified my complaint, then gave me the estimate of cost to replace fuel tank. Chrysler corp. Has offered a 25% discount to help with replacement of entire fuel tank. The whole fuel tank needs to be replaced because the faulty part is built into it. The cost quote from the Chrysler dealership, parts and labor is $1,350. 00. The price of the fuel tank only, no labor is $905. 00. This should be covered by Chrysler 100%, the fuel tank did not wear out or fail, the part they built into it failed. It may appear by the year model, (2006) that this an older model beginning to have problems. This is not the case, car has been kept up with regular service and maintenance and is in otherwise mint condition. I feel that this is a serious safety issue, and now I am aware that I cannot fill my fuel tank to capacity without having this issue re occur. Please, any help appreciated. Thank you.

50 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 03/14/2012

After filling up gas tank to capacity, vehicle stalled after driving for approximately one mile because fuel flooded the engine. The vehicle restarted after several attempts but vehicle continued to stall after a mile. I took vehicle to an authorized dealer who stated that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The fuel tank was replaced but I am still concerned that this problem could have caused a crash resulting in a lot of damage and possible death. The vehicle only had 26,100 miles.

51 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 02/09/2012

The contact owns a 2005 Chrysler 300c. The contact stated that while driving 55 mph, the vehicle ran out of fuel and stalled. The contact stated that the fuel gauge displayed a reading indicating that fuel was present in the fuel tank at the time of the failure. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 92,000.

52 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 01/03/2012

Vehicle stalled after refueling. Filling the gas tank to full without 'topping off' will cause the car's engine to stall without any prior warning. No dtcs/miles are set. Can be restarted with some difficulty. The stall will occur at any engine/vehicle speed and will happen within the first 5 minutes of driving the car after refueling. The problem can be avoided by not filling the tank past 3/4 full. Have tested this 'work-around' at the same gas station & pump.

53 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 09/05/2011

The car will hesitate and stall unexpectedly. It seems to occur only immediately after refueling. After driving a few miles, the problem seems to go away. Internet chatter seems to indicate a bad evap solenoid/canister. Apparently this is part of the entire fuel tank and is a costly fix. This can be quite dangerous as the car will hesitate and stall even at highway speeds. It seems that this is a fairly common problem.

54 Tank Assembly problem of the 2007 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 08/05/2011

I was traveling north on I-95 at 70 mph in south carolina. Fuel gauge indicated 1/4 tank of gas and over 100 miles to empty. The obd light came on and the car slowed down (5-10 mph). I was able to roll it off the road onto the right shoulder. Gas gauge indicated a 1/4 tank of fuel. I turned the ignition off and sat for15 minutes. When I attempted to start the vehicle, it acted as though it had no gas. However, the gauge showed a 1/4 tank full. Vehicle was towed (aaa) to an exxon station in gable, SC. Fuel was added to the tank and the car could be started. The addition of $25. 00 of fuel (6 gallons?) did not move the gauge from the 1/4 tank level. An additional $25 fueling brought the gauge almost up to full. I drove it roughly 500 miles from SC to MD without incident. However, I did not allow fuel level to drop below 1/2.

55 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 05/19/2011

After refueling normally, vehicle stalls randomly and without warning for approximately the next 10-20 miles driven. Chrysler internet forum members cite a bad valve in the fuel emissions system and the corrective measure is to replace the entire fuel tank for a cost of $700. I think this should be covered by Chrysler under the federal emissions warranty and because the vehicle stalls without warning, it can be quite dangerous, there should be a recall.

56 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 12/20/2010

After filling the gas tank the car will stall when driving. This happens for several miles and while in traffic. I have come close to getting into an accident on several occasions. I have looked on line and I am not the only person with this problem.

57 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

Early build 2005 300c with low miles purchased used 3/11. Driven primarily as a highway car recently we started use more in town. I had read all the various problems had with windows (not working) and pulling to the right and had both of those issues but not the engine stall issue until October. I read about not filling one ounce beyond when the pump shuts off but my observation is even that now is too much. Whenever the car is filled up, it will stall/shut down 3-6 times in the next 2-3 miles of city driving. No stutter, just shuts down completely. I've tried shifting to neutral and racing the engine when pulling up to stop signs to keep it from stalling, with limited success. Not that I am recommending that but better than dying when you expect it to accelerate. A somewhat similar experience when getting onto the on-ramp but more of a stutter situation than actually stalling. From what I've read it is too much gas getting into the engine via emissions hose from tank so computer does not compensate with more air (engine racing would be the result) so it floods out as in choking out a lawn mower from decades ago to get it to stop running. I've owned 50 cars and this is the most dangerous vehicle I've ever owned because of this reason. Even knowing it is likely to happen does not help so I won't let anyone else drive the car. . . . If they were to make a left hand turn in traffic after filling the tank it would be a fireball waiting to happen. It's a very nice car to drive once you get the steering (cradle shift and weird camber settings) accomplished but we are leaving it pretty much only for highway driving and manually calculating how much gas has been used and so as to leave the tank 2-3 gallons short of full when filling it up. Pain in the rear to be sure but better than making a left turn in front of someone and having the engine die. . . Along with you.

58 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

When I fill up the gas tank the car stalls after 1-2 minutes. Restart and stalls again. Goes on for first 10 miles after refill. This happens after every fill up. Only way to prevent is to fill tank at 80% or less. Checked the internet (Chrysler 300c stalling) and I find several people reporting the exact same problem. Clearly a manufacturing problem that can lead to some serious accidents.

59 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 03/03/2010

After filling up gas tank to full (not overfilling - stop fueling once pump shuts off) and driving at slow speeds less than 5mph or at idle speed, car dies with no warning, engine light and oil light comes on. It takes several tries to re-start the car. Engine dies approximately 4+ times until it runs fine. This happens periodically, not everytime car is fueled up. I fill up at 1/2 tank twice a week. This incident occurs periodically - about once month. I have had the car die as I am crossing busy intersections, turning into a side road enought times that I have blocked traffic and have fear of being t-boned because the car diees without warning in the middle of crossing a street or when making a turn.

60 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 01/20/2010

I am not sure about the actual start date or mileage, but this has been a continued problem for about 4 years. Each time I fill the fuel tank, the car engine starts misfiring and completely cutting off, it continues to do this for several miles (probably 6 to 8) if I have topped up the tank. This results in loss of power steering and power brakes and more than once has nearly let to an accident. I now make sure that I stop filling the tank as soon as the nozzle shuts off, but this still happens for a couple of miles. The engine runs fine at all other times, but this problem occurs every time I fuel the car. I research this problem through the internet and found that many owners of this car hare having the same problem and that the fix requires an expensive replacement of the fuel tank. This problem is definitely a safety issue and I feel Chrysler should issue a recall. .

61 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 01/01/2010

I've been having a problem with my car stalling after I fill up at the gas station for a few years now. I read that Chrysler was not recalling for this reason so I just read forums and tried not to fill up my gas tank but sometimes I forget and the problem continues.

62 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 03/10/2009

The contact owns a 2006 Chrysler 300-c. The contact stated after filling the vehicle with gasoline, the vehicle would stall repeatedly until the fuel level indicator moved off the full mark. . The dealer stated the failure was due to a vent valve sensor inside the fuel tank that was causing the problem. The dealer stated the fuel tank would need to be replaced as well as the char coal canister. The failure mileage was 30,000 and the current mileage was 70,000. Updated 03/30/11.

63 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 08/01/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Chrysler 300c. The contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently stall moments after being refueled. The failure occurred when the vehicle was refueled after having less than 1/2 a tank of gasoline, when driving at any speed and also when first starting the vehicle. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired the VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 73,000 and the current mileage was 77,000.

64 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 01/10/2008

After filling up the gas tank the car stalled multiple times and was very difficult to start. This happened several times before it would run properly. This happens every time I fill the gas tank. The solution has been to not fill the tank. Chrysler knows this is a problem--the have been able to recreate it in their test.

65 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chrysler 300C

Failure Date: 10/30/2007

Vehicle stalls repeatedly after fueling for approximately 35 miles and sometimes takes several attempts to restart. This is very dangerous and frightening because it is never known when or where the vehicle will leave you disabled. My car has stalled many, many times, on the road, at intersections, in the middle of intersection, at stop lights, on railroad tracks, on freeway on ramps and off ramps, parking lots, and anywhere else it so chooses. I talked to mechanics and I have done some research on this and it seems to be a problem with the flat top fuel tank design, requiring the fuel tank to be replaced, but I have yet to receive notice from the manufacturer about a recall. Please look into this matter because I am concerned about the safety of myself, my family, and other 300c owners. Please help and thank you for your time!.
