My transmission will not go into the last gear and was slipping. Car has 38,000 miles on it and when I had it checked out the mechanic said there was a cellinoid bad in the transmission and when he replaced it the transmission still was not working properly by not changing gears and when he took the part back to the parts store he was informed that there was a problem with Chryslers transmissions. I had a town & country van several years ago and that transmission also was defective. Now I cannot get my money back from buying a part that really wasn't needed because the transmission it self is defective. My mechanic felt so bad about this that he checked the internet and discovered Chrysler has a problem with their transmissions. What rights or what can we do about this? I do not have monies to squander and I am still paying for my car. Thanks.

Tl- the contact owns a 2003 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. The vehicle was previously included in NHTSA campaign id number: 03v076000 (power train:clutch assembly) and was repaired prior to the contact having ownership of the vehicle. While driving approximately 30 mph, the the contact was unable to switch gears. The contact was depressing the clutch when he noticed that the gear shifter was fractured. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostics. The technician stated the clutch assembly and the shifter cable would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 67,000. Kmj.

I have owned a manual shift 2004 Chrysler Pt Cruiser since Jan 2004. In June of 2006 the vehicle started rolling back in our driveway. It does not matter what gear it is in. I reported this to the dealer who at first said it wouldn't happen. Then they saw it with their own eyes. They diagnosed the problem and said it was the clutch slipping. Two days later I had paid for a new clutch and was told the vehicle did not roll back anymore, even when they pushed on it. I was told to set the parking brake at least 3 clicks for the next 3 days until the clutch had settled in. Three weeks later I parked on my drive of normal slope and ran inside for 5 minutes. When I returned the vehicle was 3/4 down the driveway. I returned the vehicle to the dealer. The next day they called to tell me that their service manager and mechanic had been told by Chrysler that the roll back is normal for that car. When asked why it never did it before I was told that the engine had gotten older and more lose and that all the Pt Cruisers roll back. I have been working with the dealer who has been in touch with Chrysler. I have also reported this problem with the customer assistance center but they are still standing their ground saying that the roll back is normal. Now the dealership is saying even a 2006 manual shift Pt Cruiser can be seen rolling back when they put it on a slope in their shop. I believe this is a major safety issue. It could actually cause a death if there was a child playing near the vehicle or even injury to an adult.

2001 Pt Cruiser, 5 speed manual transmission, 60,000 miles engine surges when car is moving, most noticeable when the car is not in gear. When coasting the engine rpm will vary between 1,200 and 2,000 rpm every 3-4 seconds until the car comes to a stop and then the engine rpm falls to 800. When the car is in gear, the car will accelerate without stepping on the gas pedal. The dealer reprogrammed the powertrain control module, but that only fixed the problem for one day. The car engine can surge when coasting and about to move into a parking spot or garage. I believe this is a serious safety issue.
