Car will shut off when decelerating and mph is below 15. Also will lunge forward sometimes during acceleration and has stalled at times. Been to dealership twice and they said they could not find anything the first time, second time they ran a "software upgrade".

I have owned a 2004 Chrysler Sebring for about 3 years. This issue has been sporadic throughout the time I've had the car. After driving on the highway and then needing to come to a stop at a traffic light, stop sign, or toll booth, the car periodically does one of two things; it either stalls, which then I have to restart the car and all is fine, or the rpms drop and this causes the car (by itself) to react by revving up the rpms and lunging forward while my foot remains on the brake. It's not so much the stalling part that bothers me, as I restart the car and go. However, on several occasions, I nearly hit the car in front of me when the car lunged forward. The occurrences are infrequent, but it is only going to take one time that the nearly becomes an accident. This issue occurs maybe 15-20 times per year. Out 20 occurrences, it will stall 18 times and lunge 2 times. Nothing has ever been found to be mechanically wrong with the car. After doing some research, it appears to be a common issue with this year, make and model. I've seen enough complaints to take the time to send this to you.

I was driving my car along the freeway and all of a sudden the car began to accelerate. I was unable to stop. I ended up in a ditch and crashing into some trees and I lost three of my fingers. I was driving a 2008 Chrysler Sebring. I need any information concerning any recalls or defects regarding this vehicle. Thank you.
I was driving west on jefferson Ave in detroit. There are traffic signals at both ends of a short bridge where it passes over I-375. I stopped at the first and, when the light changed, started forward, the second traffic signal turned red. The vehicle in front of me stopped, but, when I took my foot off of the accelerator and put it on the brake, the car continued accelerating and, although I was literally standing up on the brake, it had no effect and I hit the stopped vehicle in front of me going about 25 or 30 miles an hour. The air bag did not deploy. Similar events have occurred a half dozen or more times before, but never with the same consequences. On previous occasions, the continuing acceleration stopped after a delay and I was able to bring the car to a stop, on two previous occasions, there was another auto a car length or more in front of me, and the delay before the brake took over caused me to bump into it. In neither case was there any bodily or serious vehicle damage. In other instances, I was able to avoid collision, after suffering a scare. After each episode, I reported the problem when I took the car to the dealer. On two occasions, the dealer's service department kept the car several days trying to replicate the occurrence. They were never successful. (if they retain copies of their service orders, they will reflect that I reported the problem and they were unable to determine the cause or to fix it. ) my vehicle is seriously damaged and, although I was able to drive it to the parking lot at my nearby office, I do not expect to repair it or, of course, to ever drive it again. When Chrysler customer service was called by my wife after one of the earlier acceleration events, they told her there was no recall or record of similar complaints and to take the car to a dealer.

I have a 2007 Chrysler Sebring and 1 week I have had the car for over two years and fear for my safety and others. Since I've bought the car I have experienced the following problems. When car is at red light the car jumps forward without putting foot on gas. Car has stalled out in intersections. Car begins by feeling like it is going to stall out then it will surge forward while at a complete stop with foot depressed on brake. Today at an intersection car at red light with foot on brake and car began to roll back while foot depressed on brake. Car has been taken to dealer and has Chrysler has been contacted without help.
The car runs find most of the time. But sometimes, while you are driving, the accelerator will lose power and regardless of how much pressure you apply, the car will not go forward. It doesn't happen all of the time. I have taken the car to a chyrsler dealership three times and they have been unable to fix it.
Anytime is rains car seems to not be able to accelerate and wants to stall from a stop or low rpm's, especially at turns and stop signals and stop lights, had car looked at and was unable to fix problem.
The contact owns a 2008 Chrysler Sebring. A month after purchasing the vehicle, the contact noticed that the vehicle would vibrate when shifting gears at 20-40 mph. When the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle would accelerate on its own. The vehicle was driven to the dealer on several occasions, but the mechanic could not duplicate the failure. The mechanic performed diagnostic testing as well and was informed that there was no defect. Recently, while idling at a stop sign, the vehicle inadvertently accelerated and almost caused a rear end crash. The dealer was notified and they stated that they were not liable for the repairs because they could not duplicate the failure. The manufacturer was notified and they informed her that they would replace the vehicle, but only if she paid twenty-five cents per mile. The current mileage was 14,500 and failure mileage was 2,800. Updated 2/17/09 updated 02/19/09.
The contact owns a 2008 Chrysler Sebring convertible. While stopped at a red light, the the contact depressed the accelerator pedal but the vehicle would not accelerate. The failure recured twice. In addition, when the brakes were applied the vehicle would hesitate to stop. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for diagnostics. The technicians were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The VIN was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 6,000.
Tl-the contact owns a 2007 Chrysler Sebring. The contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the vehicle would shake and stalled. There were loud noises that came from the engine. The vehicle regained power independently. The contact would depress the accelerator several times to resolve failure. The failure recurred consistently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for inspection but were unable to determine the cause of failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 6,000. The current mileage was 23,700. Yn.
The contact owns a 2004 Chrysler Sebring. He stated that the engine would race and the vehicle would surge. Surge forward. The engine would rail until he turned the key off. The current mileage was 43,500 and the failure mileage was 41,000.
I have a 2001 Chrysler Sebring 4 door sedan. Since the purchasing the new car directly from the dealer the car has frequently experienced unexpected acceleration. I fortunately have not be injured as a result however, this is a well know problem as my previous Chrysler did this as well. It will happen while sitting at a stand still the car will propel itself forward and if your foot is not on the brake it will take off.
Shortly after I took delivery on my 2004 Sebring sedan in July, 2004, I returned to the dealer because the car would shake and stall out at low idle speeds. The dealer addressed the problem. The problem recurred again in late 2005, but this time, it didn't always stall out. At times while I was breaking or even stopped with my foot on the break, the car would suddenly surge forward without my touching the accelerator. I took it to the dealership again, and it was fixed, I was told, by a computer update, and I got it back on 12/1/05. I noticed that the problem was recurring as I drove about 450 miles on January 3rd and 4th of 2006. I planned to take the car back to the dealership after driving home on 1/6. But on the last leg of the trip, as I applied the brakes coming up on cars stopped at a traffic light, the engine surged and the car hurtled forward as I yelled and tried to get the brakes to override the acceleration. I rear-ended the car in front of me at the light, but only knocked out her left brake light. The Sebring sustained over $5000 in damages. I drove the car the rest of the way to my home, but on reflection, I was too afraid to drive it to the dealership for repairs, and they came and drove it to be repaired. When they checked for the surge I described, this time they were unable to duplicate it, so they said they could do nothing. I have not accepted the car back. Too dangerous.
2002 Chrysler sea bring convertible lx - the car was bought used. Since owning the car several times as approaching a stop the vehicle will rev and surge forward. Once the vehicle surges forward has to slam on the brakes to get the vehicle to stop. Took it to a Chrysler dealership, and they were unable to duplicate the problem. Also, were are unable to tell the consumer why the vehicle did this. The last time this happened was when the consumer pulled into my garage and the vehicle surged. The consumer lost control, hitting objects in the garage. The vehicle was not under recall.

Consumer has a 2004 Chrysler seabring. Consumer complained about an intermittent stalling problem. Vehicle has been worked on twice due to stalling. Dealer cleaned the throttle body twice. The vehicle was at the dealer on August 12, 2005. Then the vehicle stalled again on August the 13, 2005. Dealer said the problem was build up in the throttle body. When the vehicle stalled there was no warning, and the vehicle started up with no problem after stalling. She contacted dealer August 15, 2005 and the dealership assured her the vehicle was safe, and did not offer to try to do anything else to fix the problem. She did not think vehicle was safe, and was scared to let her family ride in it.
(1) the course of action when leaving my employment workplace on Thursday, July 21, approximately 6:00 p. M. Cst: I started my 2001 Chrysler Sebring with my remote start (which I have done daily since 2002), got into the car to leave the parking lot, secured my seat belt, and depressed the brake in order to put the car into drive (no cars were parked in front of mine). (2) the moment I put the car into gear (drive) it took off like a bullet without any acceleration. The car was accelerating independently (runaway) and headed toward a 4-lane, busy street. Braking had no effect on slowing the car but I could steer. I turned to avoid entering the busy street but crashed into the corner of a brick building. Elapsed time from the point of failure to the crash was very short; I estimate it to be 5 seconds. I was injured and hospitalized with a fractured heel bone, ankle bones, and ribs. (3) the car was declared a total loss so there has not been any repair or replacement.
When coming to a stop with my foot on the brake, the idle will drop down and then surge causing the car to lurch forward. It has also stalled on 2 occasions. I have almost hit another car and a pedestrian when the car unexpectedly jumped forward. I am afraid I will hit something. This problem needs to be investigated now.
For about a year I have had an intermittent problem with the tachometer and odometer on my jxi. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. The dealership said this is a common problem with the 1996 and 1997 's and that I need a new circuit board at a cost of over $700. 00. Not replaced yet.
I have already submitted one complaint and this is an extension of that plus a new complaint. On 7/11/2004 my vehicle surged again when I started to take my foot off the brake while sitting at a stop sign. When will an investigation begin on this problem? including my past complaint I have found 10 complaints about this problem. Does someone have to die before an investigation is started? the odi id# for just the surging issue are: 10075295, 10079965, 10079969, 10072311, 10063597, 10064593, 10074633, 10065378, 10075041, and 10080475. I informed the dealership about the problem and they looked at all the sensors and computers and said they found no problem or record of a problem in the car's computer, this was on 7/12/2004. Also a problem from months ago, the car suddenly died, luckily my wife was cruising through a park and the speed limit was 10 mph, she was able to restart it and it hasn't happened since. We took it to the dealer and again they checked everything and found no problem. 3rd issue, my Sebring has been idling very rough every now and then. I drive my car every single day, but it appears to do it mainly when it is the first start of the day but it has done it at other times. The dealer has been notified about this issue and they requested we leave it with them over night so they could test it on the first start. Service arrangements for this issue have not been made yet. I have found many complaints about all three of these problems on this website, but there is not a single investigation open on this model of Chrysler, why?.
My 2004 Chrysler Sebring limited convertable has an ongoing problem of the engine intermittently surging, revving, and dying at slow speeds. I've been to the dealer 11 times. He can't duplicate problem but has found oil on map sesor, pcv valve & hose and intake plenum. He has replaced these parts and finally had to replace whole engine along with running service bulletin # 18-041-03. The surging, reving, and dying has started again. The first time was at 531 miles and the most resent was at 18500 miles. The Chrysler people told me mine was the only case but I've found 9 more on this website. Something must be done!!!!.
Sitting at a stop light, the vehicle's rpms increased and it tried to surge forward, but foot was still firmly on the brake so the car didn't move more than a couple of inches. The next day a truck stopped in the road and it had no brake lights, so my wife had to slam on the brakes. She released the brake and as she did the engine's rpms revved up very strongly and the car surged forward. The brake was applied again and the car came to a stop and held the car back until the engine's idle speed returned to normal a few seconds later, because of the surge an accident almost occurred. Took the car to the dealership, they looked at it and found no problems, said it may have been a computer glitch. A few weeks later, while letting off the brake the car surged again, brake was applied and car came to a stop. Then a week or two after that while stopped in a parking lot with the transmission in drive and the brake applied, the car revved up again and tried to surge forward, but again only moved a couple of inches because the brake was firmly applied. Later car died, but was able to restart right away. Car taken back to dealer in regard to both problems. The dealer said the stalling problem could have been because of the oil filter. They replaced the oil filter and the oil switch, as for the surging problem they said they could not find anything wrong, and again it could have been a computer glitch.
When I brake to park the vehicle, it surges forward. It has done this several times. The dealership has replaced the throttle position censor, but it continues to surge.
While driving at 40 mph vehicle accelerated without warning.

When the vehicle was in reverse, and the brake pedal applied, the vehicle accelerated at a high speed. The vehicle had gone out of control approximately 55 feet and hit the garage and two parked vehicles. The brakes did not respond because the vehicle did not shift into any other gear.
On a number of occasions, vehicle will accelerate without warning. When applying brakes, engine revs up to 4000 rpm and vehicle becomes impossible to control. Major rear-end freeway accident resulted on third failure. Airbags did not deploy. Dealer is aware of problem but has been unable to duplicate.
Fuel indicator, tachometer and odometer operate properly intermittently (tach & odo are more frequently inoperative than operative) usually tach is at 0 and odo does not indicate any numbers. Fuel gauge usually operates, but drops suddenly.
Consumer states when slowing down or stopped at a light, the throttle control will not return to idle. Problem occurs intermittenly. Mr.

After shifing gear out of park into drive vehicle suddenly took off and hit another vehicle. Dealer and manufactrer were not notified at this time. The vehicle was totalled.
Car accelerated, went into reverse - even though it was in drive and crashed. Steering wheel and brakes would not respond.
Car surged backward and crashed into a truck.
Consumer's vehicle exprienced the same throttle problem as stated in recall # 02 v 186 000,which resulted in an accident. But this recall was for years 1995/1996, not on 1998. Contacted dealer.
The car is started and acceleration begins without any problems. Then within a fairly short time the car begins to decelerate and sometime completely stops. There were times when it jerked forward as the accelerator was pressed. It is currently at its 4th location which is also the 2nd dealership in trying to diagnose the problem. Last week the dealership said they were 100% sure they knew the problem and how to fix it. After they did the repair the problem was still there. I am waiting for them to contact Chrysler engineers. I am afraid to drive the car becasuse you never know when it will cut out and this could put me and my children in a very dangerous situation that could result in an accident. I have taken very good care of the car and expected it to last me another 1-2 years. This has been very upsetting as I do not have any other transportation and am a single parent.
