Power Steering Fluid problems of the 2006 Chrysler Town & Country

25 problems related to power steering fluid have been reported for the 2006 Chrysler Town & Country. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 04/16/2013

Took my vehicle to get a new set of tires. Upon the free fluid checks being done, the power steering fluid was noticed to be low. When the mechanic started looking into the issue, he noticed that the rack and pinion is leaking. This is certainly what is causing the loud whining noise. This was a month after the bolts for the alternator broke off leaving my wife and kids stranded. Fortunately I was able to get the broken studs out with vise grips.

2 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2013

While conducted an oil change, I noticed that both rack and pinion boots are wet with power steering fluid. This is a low mileage vehicle and am disappointed that the steering is already leaking fluid. I have not had this checked with a mechanic as of yet but I imagine that after reading complaints here and on other sites, I will end up having to replace the entire rack and pinion assembly to correct this leak. A simple boot replacement will not be sufficient as dirt and water will already have damaged the assembly. I would recommend having Chrysler conduct a recall and replacing these with quality components at no expense to the vehicle owners.

3 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

Power steering started to whine. I took it to a Chrysler dealership. They said I needed a power steering kit and fluid change. They also said the water pump was leaking. Only thing is I took it to the same dealership at 22,000 miles with the same power steering problem, that was only 12,000 miles ago. Do I have to have the power steering redone every 12,000 miles????? and isn't 32,000 a bit early for water pump leak. I think Chrysler should pay.

4 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2013

Rack and pinion failure as end seals on left and right hand sides failed. The power steering fluid leaked into the ribbed boots and later onto the ground resulting in hampered steering ability.

5 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 11/24/2011

A loud whine started in the engine compartment and steering became difficult. Dealership stated that the rack of the steering system had leaked and lost the power steering fluid. The dealership stated this was a common problem. The rack and pinion of the steering had to be replaced.

6 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 02/27/2011

I own a 2006 town and country with 44,925 miles. At 38,000 mile (just out of warranty I noticed a whine in the engine compartment after interstate driving. After checking I noticed that the power steering fluid was low but not empty. I filled the unit and the noise subsided but didn't go away. I read that the power steering reservoir sometimes has a plugged filter so I chsnged the reservoir but no change. I've continually had to add small amounts of atf +4 most recently 2 weeks ago. After checking today the level is down again. And the rack and pinion ass'y boot is leaking. Cost to replace . . . About $1000 if the pump is ok. My first and last Chrysler product.

7 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2010

Purchased my van in 2008, used with 40000 miles on it. In winter of 2009 I noticed a loud whining noise when turning but once engine warmed up would stop. Had power steering fluid check and was low. Filled stopped noise. Same in 2010, 2011, and now 2012. Have to constantly fill fluid. It has to be leaking somewhere. From what I have read this is not a cheap fix. And more importantly if someone's power steering goes out going down a highway or interstate. . . Very very dangerous. This is a part defect and consumers should not be paying for the fix. Chrysler should. With all the complaints, what will it take for a recall?.

8 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2010

Power steering rack seals failed, fluid leaking from power steering system. Failure was proceeded by long-term low-pitched whining noise coming from power steering system. Fluid drained from system while driving making it very difficult to steer vehicle. Dealer recommends replacing power steering rack, out of warranty, cost $900. 00.

Passenger side window doesn't go up and down. No events leading up to either failure. Constant problem. I have yet to come up with the $1000 that dealer wants to fix problem. 16 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2009

I have a 2006 Chrysler Town & Country with 42,000 miles. After the last oil change I noticed a loud whining noise after starting it & continued to sound like a jet taking off until it warmed up. My husband had a friend look at it & noticed there was very little power steering fluid, so he filled it up & the sound disappeared. Today I took it to the Chrysler dealer again for another oil change & they said they noticed a leak coming from the rack & it needed to be replaced for $800+! how can this be since it only has 42,000 miles??!! unfortunately the warranty expired at 36,000. They said I had to replace it or the power steering could go out at any time. Luckily nothing horrible happened while driving on the highway recently with my daughter!! there should definitely be a recall on this!! I have been hearing from others & reading tons of posts online about this very problem with newer t & c. Please look into this major problem!!!!.

17 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2009

I have a 2006 town and country 35,635 miles - bought it new but the warranty ran out in April. I have had a terrible whining problem that was just diagnosed as my rack and pinion was leaking. $375 for the part, $357 for labor, $16. 00 fluid and $59. 95 for the alignment after. I asked the dealer about complaining to Chrysler and she said to try it. Well Chrysler is going to pay the part and warranty it for 1 year or 12,000 miles. So I"m still not happy about the $432. 95 left for me, which I think Chrysler should pay also because of the numerous reports. I think there should have been a recall and the whole shot paid for.

18 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

I have a 2006 Chrysler town and country that the rack and pinion is leaking power steering fluid.

19 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2009

Squealing power steering during winter months when van was inspected I was told I needed rack and pinion replaced leaking power steering fluid.

20 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 03/02/2009

The steering began to whine and groan, particularly when cold and not having been driven for a day or more. It often continues to whine, especially when being turned more than one full circle, but sometimes even when sitting still and straight. The repair shop identified leaking steering rack boots and the fluid is a bit low. At this time, we have not done anything, because replacement of the boots is very expensive and replacement of the rack is more expensive. At the time, we had the minivan less than 3 years and it had just over 40,000 miles on it, just out of warranty.

21 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 12/18/2008

I started experiencing a loud whining sound coming out of the engine compartment area on an extended trip. I took the vehicle to the dealership while under warranty and they told me they could not replicate problem and suggested changing and flushing and complete service on transmission. While the whining sound subsided somewhat the sound still remained. Now I come to find out the power steering pump is leaking fluid all over the exhaust with a terrible and nauseating odor coming into the cabin area. Not only is this a potential fire hazard but also can be damaging to the respiratory system. The failure of this system is premature at best and extremely hazardous at its worst.

22 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

Rack & pinion leaking power steering fluid.

23 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 06/02/2008

Week of 5/27/13 power steering groaning. I'm getting ready for the rack to go again. Fluid not low yet. First time rack leaked all fluid out was in 08, van still under warranty so it was replaced. A couple of years later it leaked all fluid out and rack replaced at my expense (around $800 here). Now I'm prepping for a 3rd go around. This is crazy I have other autos that are 20 years old that I finally replaced the ps pump on one of them (and not a 800 dollar rack).

24 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 03/12/2008

The van was purchased used in 2007 with approximately 4,000 miles from flemington Chrysler in NJ. At approximately 10,000 miles, the rack was found to be leaking and it was replaced under warranty. Soon after, the steering seemed a little tight but we chalked it up to the new components. Fast forward to 2012, the van now has 80,000 miles and the steering has begun to whine, groan and shudder. I have flushed the fluid and now replaced the pump. The whine and shudder are still there so it looks like the rack has failed again. The van can easily become a safety problem and Chrysler should be ashamed. Definitely the last Chrysler product I buy which is too bad because they've put out some really unique, good looking cars lately. My family's safety is more important thanks.

25 Power Steering Fluid problem

Failure Date: 02/08/2008

My 2006 Chrysler town and country had a terrible whining noise upon starting it. When you would turn corners, it whined even louder. It constantly leaked power steering fluid so bad that it was all over the exhaust. I took my van to the dealership where it was purchased to find out that the whole steering rack needed to be replaced. They then advised me to take my van home and drive it to florida while waiting up to 6 months for a replacement steering rack from Chrysler. I refused to do this. This is a serious hazard. Power steering fluid was leaking all over the exhaust of the van, and they wanted me to take it on a 12 hour drive to florida! I told my dealer I would not leave the dealership with this vehicle, nor would I put my 3 small children (all under age 3) in this fire trap. They gave me a loaner. This is a serious safety concern, and I would hope that the NHTSA would be willing to help consumers out. The dealership even said there is a major problem. There were over 13000 of these "steering racks" on back order with Chrysler. What is going to happen when powering steering fluid gets all over the exhaust, catches the vehicle on fire, and an entire family dies in a burning vehicle. Is this what it will take to get Chrysler to do something. I would hope not, but it looks that way, luckily my dealer gave me a loaner vehicle, and within about 5 days, I had the power steering rack replaced. This is absolutely a safety hazard. Power sterring fluid is highly flammable. It is time to do something about this. Chrysler obviously does not care! thank you for your response and hopefully, quick action that is needed. Crystal.
