Takata recall: my car has been dying overnight, even with a brand new battery. I took it to a mechanic to get fix and they told me it's a computer problem that's been happening with all Chrysler vans with a 3rd row seat that are 2014 and older. They claimed it's a censor that's draining the battery overnight (the car went through 3 battery in one month). They also said that only Chrysler dealership can fix it (usually by updating the software) but they charge $150 an hour for it.
While driving my Town & Country on both city streets and highway the engine randomly shuts off to include all instrument panel lights on the dash. After coming to a complete stop I simply turn the key to try to re-start and it does. This has happened several times in the last month. I finally took it to the dealer and they could not determine the cause. They did some software updates and sent me on my way. The very next day it happened again. The dealer said that if it happened again that they would need to replace the catalytic converter. Catalytic converter? seriously doubt this is what is causing the vehicle to completely shut off. This is very dangerous and can be deadly.

We bought our certified used van in may of 2012. In June of 2012 the alternator had to be replaced, as the battery light came on while driving on the highway. Within the first year of ownership it started having weird quirks: the rear heating system would come on while driving with the temperature controls off, the previously closed windows would be rolled down, and sliding door would be open upon returning to the locked van. In November of 2015 the key fob had become so sensitive to the touch that just a slight bump would make the lock indicator honk sound. We took it into a Chrysler dealership in December of 2015 and a new key fob and and software update stopped the honking, the sliding doors opening and the windows rolling down. The heating system continued to turn on by itself. In July 2016 the van started being hard to start. We had it towed to a garage in michigan, where we were visiting, and we were told the code was a security issue between the fob and the starter. We drove it to a dealer in michigan who could not duplicate the problem. Difficulty starting the van started again in October 2016, especially after a cold night. On October 31, 2016, while the van was off in the driveway I heard a noise like a vacuum coming from under the van. When I went to unlock and start the van it was dead. After having the battery replaced, the mechanic friend who replaced it heard the noise and said it sounded like the fuel pump running (while the car was off). The garage we took it to found that we had a faulty totally integrated power module (tipm). Some research has show us that this is a common problem for Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler vehicles that causes airbags to not work because the fuel pump runs constantly. The heating system turning on is also a symptom of this. Why if some Jeep/Dodge/Chrysler vehicles have a recall for this part are they not for all models?.

The vehicle at times will not start. You put the key in the ignition and turn to start and get nothing. It is not a battery problem. If the car sits, it will eventually start. Sometimes sitting 5 mins works, other times about an hour. We have tried replacing the battery, starter and Chrysler recommended a software update but it still happens. We will have it towed to dealership but by the time it gets there, it starts. It did duplicate the problem once at dealer but they have been unable to diagnose it. Previous Chrysler models have had recalls on ignition but they state this year does not. They have been unable to diagnosis problem but have seen problem does occur. Usually happens after driving the car on errands and then trying to start after sitting for about an hour. This has been going on for months and still can't diagnosis it.
The contact owns a 2008 Chrysler town and country. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced under NHTSA campaign number: 14v373000 (electrical system, air bags) where updates were made to the software. After the recall service, while driving 35 mph, the vehicle hesitated to accelerate. The instrument panel light also illuminated. Additionally, the key fob would not release the door locks. All of the electrical components of the vehicle failed and caused the vehicle to completely shut down. The contact was unable to enter the vehicle because a manual key was not available. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure and there were no additional repairs made to the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.

There was a recall on the rear quarter vent window switch. This caused an electrical fire inside my van causing all of the windows and electric doors to cease opening, literally trapping my then 3 year old twins inside the van on 11/30/16. Supposedly fixed only to have it happen again 8/31/17. The second issue involves a recall on the powertrain control module when the van was brand new. It had to have reprogramming of software because of poor shift quality. This was done on 1/1/12. The last almost 2 years of my life have revolved around this issue. My van frequently thinks it's stuck in reverse when it is actually in park so it won't start. This can go on for days. It was brought to the dealership on 10/18/16, 11/3/16, 11/30/16, and again on 8/31/17 all for this exact reason. I have numerous time stamped pictures from the 9 month gap that I stopped bringing it in to show it was still doing it. I didn't bring it in, however because the issue was never resolved because no code came up. This time Chrysler has came up with 8 things that it is but they are waiting on the back ordered powertrain module to complete the last of the 8 items. In the meantime they are making me pay over $1000 out of pocket for a rental I can't afford. The first time the electrical fire happened I was driving on the express way in an ice storm with my children and dog where there were no exits. The second time it happened, I was driving with the girl I babysit on a 50mph road. When the car thinls it's in reverse, it sometimes happens when I am in the pickup line at school causing other parents tp get angry when I am blocking everyone. Sometimes I go to start my car and it's fine, other days or minutes it thinks it's in reverse. It has been the bain of my existence.
Vehicle engine shut down while driving in a parking lot preparing to pull onto a 4 lane busy county road, all of the systems other then brakes failing. It was not the key as it remained in the on position never moving. Only happens after using the remote starter. We have since stoped using the remote starter after the 3rd time the issue happened. Past issues. Etc inop. Car would not accelerate past idle today car will not turn over starter will not even click clock losses time intermittent and then we have electrical issues. I guess its Chryslers warning system telling the owner the car is not going to be working in the next 2-3 days head lights occasionaly will not turn on and some times will not turn off car has been into the dealer 8 times for electrical issues and every time they tell me they cannot reproduce the problem and send us on our way after reprogramming the main computer. Every time it apparently is a seperate electrical component. At least that is what they tell us. However it seams to me the computer for the car must be bad and or the software/ programing is severly flawed since it keeps failing. I think Chrysler is pulling a vw scam on the government and its consumers. Fix the problem. We have had nothing but problems since the first month we owned this at the time brand new car. Been in the shop 3 times in the first 6 months for electrical malfunctions and intermittently ever since.

-Jan 2015- the key was lodged in the ignition and would not come out. I had it towed to nearest chry dealer to fix. - Jan to may- car intermittently stalls/won't start. Sometimes starts with a jump. -may- mechanic/battery installed $268. -June/July- car intermittently stalls/won't start. Starts if you wait a while. -August-won't start/wont jump/stranded with kids/towed to mechanic. -changed my batteries in my key fobs at least 3 times in 2015. -I am constantly stranded with my children and spend days without my car waiting for mechanics to find out the problem. The Chrysler dealer informs me that it's a minimum of $200 just to look at it. It will most likely be more if it's electrical and they need a day or two. I have to get my kids to and from school and can't pay for another car. Mechanic said to look at bulletins/info on tipm and win. Other chry year/makes have had exact same issues and were recalled. There is a class action suit for this year/make and many more. How am I still driving? I was given a tip by a mechanic: open the hood and then the fuse box. Remove the m27 fuse. Wait 10 seconds. Replace fuse. Start car. It's been working so far! apparently, this clears a software lockup in the module.
Appears related to NHTSA action number: dp14004 problem: sudden unintended and uncontrollable acceleration sudden unintended acceleration of our 2010 Chrysler town and country touring was experienced on 2 occasions (8/2/14 and 12/5/14) nearly resulting in a serious accident on each occurrence. Both incidents occurred under similar circumstances. While traveling on a freeway @ approximately 65 mph bearing left (either to change lanes or on a curve ) and accelerating, the accelerator pedal drops to the floor with uncontrolled full throttle acceleration. Braking did not stop the acceleration and emergency evasive maneuvers were required to avoid serious accidents on both occasions. Shifting in and out of neutral several times was performed and eventually the accelerator returned to normal operation. I am unsure what caused the unintended acceleration to stop. Key information identical during both incidents: 1. Engine oil was changed within days of each incident. Oil change reminder counter was reset using manufacturer reset procedure. 2. Left turn signal was engaged. 3. Travelling at approximately 65 mph when beginning acceleration (transmission downshifted). 4. Throttle position was approximately 30-40% throttle to accelerate to pass or get up to speed after a curved freeway entrance ramp. 5. Vehicle had been driven for approximately 25 minutes prior to sudden acceleration on each occurrence (however in two completely separate locations). 6. This occurred on 2 occasions with 2 different drivers. 7. Both incidents occurred while on a freeway. 8. Duration of incidents: approximately 10-20 seconds. This appears to be a software bug (I am an it professional and electrical engineer by degree). This needs to be fixed immediately for the safety of my family and the general public.
After turning on ignition, windshield wipers turned on highest speed, although switch indicated they were turned off, there were no lights illuminated on the instrument panel, the speed, temperature and message center was not working, radio was working but had no lights, air and heat panel was working, turn signals were not working. Appeared to be electrical or computer malfunction. Turned the vehicle off and on twice to attempt to fix issue, but same issue occurred again both times. On the third attempt of turning off vehicle and re-starting, switched on and off the light switches, wiper switch, turn signal indicators a few times, and lights and messages came back on. Concerned that possible computer malfunction may override operator's ability to control lights, turn signals, windshield wipers, and other safety necessities while vehicle is in motion. Software update/recall had been performed approximately two months ago.
Tl-the contact owns a 2008 Chrysler town and country. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic where the technician informed that an unknown software needed to be updated. The vehicle was repaired. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v373000 (electrical system) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000. Ss.
Power door locks stop working. Remote control activation of power liftgate activates alarm. Software defect in body control module. Chrysler charges for software update ($120 for half hour labor). TSB 08-040-04 can temporary fix by removing iod fuse for 30 seconds to reset the body control module.

On sept. 7, 2011 we experienced a second incident where the vehicle totally shut down while in motion. Took it to the Chrysler dealer and they performed a software update ,TSB 18-003-09 , and they said this should correct the problem. We performed a dealership battery replacement on 8-1-11. On Dec. 14th, 2011 the problem re-occurred, while leaving a parking lot traveling under 10 mph. Now with out power steering assistance, I was barely able to manually maneuver the vehicle to a open parking spot, stop, put the vehicle in park and it restarted. On Dec. 22, 2011 the problem re-occurred, while backing out of my driveway traveling under 10 mph. Stopped vehicle, placed it into park and it restarted. I called the same Chrysler dealership whom performed the above stated repair, the earliest appointment date they were able to give was Dec. 27, 2011. This is incident is extremely dangerous and alarming to the safety of a family of six. We have google'd this type of incident and have read a lot of similar occurrences. We would like to recommend to the ntsb to conduct a full investigation into this type of incident and issue a safety recall recommendation to Chrysler in order to proactively avoid loss of life's due to this total system failure in which Chrysler has been made aware of.
Have a 2010 town and country. Vehicle stalled for no reason and was taken to dealer. They said they reinstalled software and were going to send paperwork. They have not. Since then the car has stalled six more times and we will be taking it back to dealer. When will Chrysler acknowledge they have a problem?.
The contact owns a 2009 Chrysler town and country. The contact he attempted to open the rear sliding doors while the vehicle was parked, but the doors began to close unexpectedly after opening halfway. The failure recurred on an intermittent basis. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the sensors on the sliding doors were too sensitive. The vehicle was in the process of having its software updated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 38,000.

We have a 2010 Chrysler t & c purchased new on sept 30 from the local Chrysler dealer. It now has less than 2000 miles on the odometer. Last Thursday evening, Dec 23rd, the battery was totally discharged after setting in the garage about 24 hours. None of the remote buttons were effective, the door had to be manually unlocked with the emergency key, and key placed in the ignition switch would do nothing and could not be removed. I tried to contact the dealer next morning, Dec 24, but found it was closed then and for the next two days. I could not get the car started by jump start and could not get the battery recharged while connected. Finally, I managed to get the battery charged while disconnected. Upon entering the car to start it,prior to inserting the key into the ignition switch, I noticed the heater blower in the second seat area was running. I checked the blower control knob and found it was turned on. I turned the knob to off and back on again. The fan stopped and did not come on back on. The car started normally with no subsequent problems. On Monday, 27th, I took the van the dealer who could not diagnose or fix the problem. The problem was also reported to Chrysler costomer service. No response has been received. Now we have a brand new van that we cannot trust with an apparent computer and/software glitch the dealer cannot diagnose or fix. What should I do now? until this problem is diagnosed and fixed we are hesitant to drive the vehicle. Just about every function, including brakes, accelerator, steering, lights, heating, cooling, gear shift, are computer controlled. Toyota's problems with accelerator and brakes come to mind. The contact requested that the personal information previous entered by him be deleted from the compliant. Vf.
The contact owns a 2010 Chrysler town and country. The contact stated that there was a beeper on the rear lift gate of certain models that was not on his vehicle. The beeper would warn anyone when the gate was going up or down. Since this function was not on his particular model year, he has been injured by the gate coming down on his head. The injury was not serious. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer and they advised him that he would have to change the software and advised him that the they received a large number of complaints in regards to consumers not wanting the feature, so they did not install it on the 2010 models. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200. The VIN was unavailable.
On 2005 Chrysler town and country, power door locks completely stop working. Pulling the iod fuse fixes the problem for a couple weeks, then they stop working again. Dealer wants $100 to upgrade software. Internet search shows this is a very common problem after 45,000 miles.

The cruise control will come on by itself and drop out on an intermittent basis. The drop out is annoying, but the self apply of the cruise causes the vehicle to speed up also intermittently. There has been a few close calls. Taken to the dealer, and they have found no problem.
2002 Chrysler Town & Country lx minivan instrument cluster/gauges stopped working. No turn signals, no gauges mph, fuel, rpm, oil, etc. Also no engine lights, abs, overheat, etc. Nothing within the instrument cluster works. Dangerous to get home driving without speedometer, & turn signals! I saw a similar recall for the pt cruiser. Could this be the same software glitch in the t&c microprocessor as well. Please issue a recall!!!.

The contact owns a 2002 Chrysler town and country. While driving 55 mph, the vehicle overheated. The vehicle made a clacking noise and smoke began to rise from the engine. The check engine light did not illuminate until the vehicle began smoking. The contact pulled to the side of the road. The engine shut off and the contact allowed the vehicle to cool down. He added water to the radiator and drove to his residence. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer and they stated that the computers failed and needed to be replaced. The contact disagreed and stated that the vehicle overheated because the fan and cooling system were inadequate in size. The dealer did not repair the vehicle. The current mileage was 71,421 and failure mileage was 50,000.
