36 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 07/02/2008

2005 Chrysler t&c stalls after gas fillup. - within the last year my 2005 t&c has begun to stall within 20 seconds after a complete fuel tank fillup. It now will stall several times within the next 2 minutes and is becoming a safety hazard out on the road. The dealer indicates a roll-over valve in the fuel tank may be at fault and a fuel tank replacement is needed. Seems a bit excessive for a fault detection sensor. Not sure this is the answer. I have read of similar complaints but no identified correction. Is there a recall or identified solution? it does not happen on partial fuel refills or if I leave the t&c running during refueling. Would appreciate any information as I now feel this is getting worse and may not start after one of these stalls.

41 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 12/21/2005

While driving along a quiet suburban street, the engine of my 2005 Chrysler Dodge caravan quit without warning. With remaining limited braking and steering, I brought the car to a safe stop. The engine would turn over, but would not start. I called for assistance; the dealership service rep confirmed that the fuel gauge sending-unit had stopped working, so even though the fuel gauge showed over half-full, I had run out of gas! the unit was replaced under warranty, leaving me to speculate what might have happened if I'd been miles out of town in a canadian-winter storm, with my family along.

42 Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 11/10/2005

Chrysler Town & Country 2002. At 20000 miles recalled for replacement of gas tank control valve seal (b25). Now leaking @ gas tank rollover valve causing van to fill with gas fumes. Dealership considers our problem though clearly in a 2002 vehicle with 57,119 miles with previous gas tank issues - one would consider perhaps a much greater problem with gas tank - certainly a serious safety risk.

43 Tank Assembly problem of the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 08/17/2005

Last week, 17 Aug 05, I had to replace the fuel tank on my '96 Chrysler t&c (VIN 1c4gp64l8tb146902) due to a fatigue crack that was spilling fuel. Chrysler has refused to accept any responsibility since my vehicle is out of warranty. Are there any requirements regarding the longevity and performance of plastic fuel tanks? other than the obvious safety concerns, the replacement cost exceeded $800. At the time of failure my vehicle had 180,885 original miles and has been meticulously maintained. The location of the crack (top, front, left corner) precludes any accidental impact of the undercarriage. According to the servicing dealer, hayes Chrysler, lawrenceville, GA, the defective tank was destroyed per environmental requirements. Please advise if there is a course of action I can take to ameliorate this problem.

47 Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 03/15/2004

My wife was driving my 2004 Chrysler Town & Country and smelled gas. She pulled over and noticed a small gash in the side of the tank. She obviously ran something over and it pierced the tank. My concern is, how come there is no protective shroud around a plastic gas tank that sits right under my 3 year olds car seat? thankfully she smelled the gas immediately and there was no fire. This may not be the case in the future. I contacted Chrysler's customer service hotline and was told there is no recall, to contact the NHTSA. I have also sent an email to Chrysler voicing my concerns and am waiting for a reply. Please look into this issue to avoid any fatalities. Thank you.

48 Tank Assembly problem of the 1997 Chrysler Town & Country

Whenever I fill up the gas tanks on my 97 Town & Country and 98 Dodge grand caravan, the fuel gauge intermittently goes to empty and you'll hear the "ding" sounds. This occurs intemittetly until the gauge is halfway empty. This been going on now for over 2 years and it's annoying.

50 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 10/20/2003

I own a 2003 Chrysler Town & Country van. During a recent trip we ran over a piece of tire lying on the highway. The impact from the small piece of tire caused a rupture in the fiberglas gas tank, along an exposed seam. The dealer in durango CO said they were told that there were five other incidents of damage to the same gas tank that week, necessitating a lengthy wait while a tank was shipped from detroit. We were told by the dealer that when the dealer called Chrysler for information about the tank, they were told to "impound" the car because it was unsafe to drive. When posing this to Chrysler, they deny that there was ever any impounding and that we were merely "advised" not to drive it. It was much more severe than that. It was, in fact, impounded and would not be released to us. We can produce witnesses to this statement who were in the dealership at the time, even though the dealership now says that is not true. Clearly, they don't want to interrupt a relationship with Chrysler. While we certainly would have little interest in driving an unsafe vehicle beyond getting it to some place where repairs might be more reasonably priced ($738 for a gas tank seems excessive), I am more concerned that the tank can receive such significant damage. It seems that any of several options would have prevented this problem. 1) if the tank was made of something other than fiberglas, it might better withstand an impact. 2) if the company is going to use fiberglas, a protective shield in front of the exposed area would prevent this type of damage. 3) a seam should not be exposed to the road surface. The split in the tank was at a seam on the underside of the tank. If such rupture can be prevented, it should be!.

52 Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 09/01/2003

Dealer told me nothing wrong with the car, sold me the car and let us drive it off the lot without performing a stop sale recall work. I don't want the vehicle. I would not have bought it if I had been informed the recall work had not been done. The recall was issued in October 2002, almost a year ago. The recall work has not been done. I do not feel safe in the vehicle and do not want to endanger me, my wife, or anyone else on the road by driving it anywhere, including the dealer whom I do not trust due to this and incidents that have happened since purchase. I cannot fit a detailed description of events due to limited character space in the on-line submittal. Subject: illegal transaction and misrepresentation by archer motors; vehicle VIN 2c8gp64l82r673787 ref. Daimlerchrysler safety recall no. B25 - fuel tank control valve Chrysler customer service file #11696229, Chrysler financial file # kmm467539v98922l0km the transaction should never have taken place because we would not have signed the contract nor driven it off the lot had we known it was a stop sale recall, and the work had not been performed. We do not feel the dealership is performing diligently to protect its customers. There were several other 2002 town and country vans on that same lot. I wonder if any of them have not had the same gas tank recall work performed? we ask that archer motor sales corporation rescind or undo this contract and make us whole again.

53 Tank Assembly problem of the 2002 Chrysler Town & Country

54 Tank Assembly problem of the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 04/04/2003

The VIN for this vehicle 1c4gp54r9tb326968 car suffered fuel line breakage after driving through a large puddle. Was towed to o'hara Chrysler-Plymouth dealer(clinton, mi) for repairs, which the fuel line damage was determined. Inquired with the service rep, jake, as to why since owning the vehicle. The maximum tank fill-up was 13. 0 - 13. 4 gallons, whereas the service manual states 18 gallons. "jake" stated that there was a tendency of the tank to bow-in, that would either reduce the fuel sensor accuracy or reduce the volume. A new tank carried a different part number than the original. Since this vehicle was assembled on January 11, 1996 and there is a NHTSA technical service bulletin #140895 issued on January 1, 1996. Am I covered by this and was I charged for a known defect? I had brought the TSB number to the service manager chris, who indicated that the TSB number was something he was not familiar with and did not meet d-c recall three digit numbers.

55 Tank Assembly problem of the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 01/01/2003

The vehicles plastic tank collapsed on the inside. This resulted in incorrect fuel level reading. The dealer replaced the pump at no charge but the sending unit in the tank has the same reading. The dealer had the fuel tank down, and stated that the tank was sagged, and possibly caused the false reading. Chrysler sent out letters about the problem but when the consumer called the dealer, they stated that this was a manufacturer problem.

59 Tank Assembly problem of the 1996 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 07/31/2002

Fuel leaking from gas tank. Took vehicle to Chrysler dealer to be checked. Was advised that fuel tank was leaking at a seam. This vehicle had an earlier recall concerning fuel leaking where the fuel pump was mounted to the tank. Repairs were made according to the recall. It seems that a fuel tank should not just start leaking for no apparent reason (there was no physical damage to the fuel tank). The tank is to be replaced by the local Chrysler dealer for a sum of $700 plus. This is a very serious safety issue in which a fire could easily occur. If this is a common occurence, it should be taken care of by the Chrysler corporation. Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.

Plastic fuel tank has developed a crack along the top (per dealer). I did notice on one or two occasions that the tank bottom developed a concave appearance. The dealer has offered to replace the fuel tank for approx. $800 with no guarantee that the replacement tank won't fail for the same reason the original tank has. I would be intereseted in hearing from you about the safety record and longevity of plastic gas tanks. I have never owned a vehicle in which the gas tank has developed a crack.
