general problems of the 2008 Dodge Avenger - part 1

The recalls associated to my vehicle are the same exact problems I am experiencing. My car is stalling and stalled on the highway. I couldn’t accelerate and had to drive with my hazards.

I was idling at a stop light when I noticed my car began to smoke shortly after the check engine, check oil and the battery alert all simultaneously came on. I then pulled over to a near alleyway when a burst of flames arose from the hood of the car.

The contact owns a 2008 Dodge Avenger. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the vehicle stalled. The battery, check engine, and throttle body warning lights were illuminated. Additionally, an abnormal odor was detected while the vehicle was parked. The contact noticed there was smoke coming from underneath the hood. The contact's father lifted the hood and removed the positive charge cable from the battery. The contact's father replaced the battery and the alternator; however, the failure recurred while driving. The contact's father replaced the alternator for the second time. The contact related the failure to NHTSA campaign numbers: 08v152000 (electrical system) and 07v426000 (fuel system, gasoline) however, the dealer confirmed the VIN was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 255,000.

Car keeps have the battery light come on out of nowhere and already replaced battery alternator and the cables for battery last winter which then had to be clipped because it was extremely hot and melting my cables and other wires. I have had nothing but electrical issues since I bought it the beginning of last winter something needs to be done and I shouldn’t have to keep paying for parts on faulty electrical and parts the manufacturer should and I have no recalls on my 08 Dodge Avenger how is that even possible?.

Engine stopped during a red light intersection, cranked up once and engine stopped again. After a dangerous intersection situation , car was towed by a pair of young boys to a safe spot. A serious accident may have resulted, if not for the quick help. Being an automotive teacher and passed shop owner inspected the situation and have come to a conclusion that the tpim failed. No warning lights appeared during situation. Scanner will not pick up any codes when hooked up to try to correct problem. 2008 Avenger with 88000 miles, will take to dealership for repairs.

Hi my name is [xxx] and I’m 28 years old and a full time single mom of 2 girls 24/7 and in February I bought a 2008 Dodge Avenger 2. 7 and the day I drove it home the check engine light came on and well long story short there it took them a month to “fix” the issue and 3 days later after getting my car back after not having it for a month the check engine light came on again…needless to say here it is almost September 7 months later and there has many endless problems and the car dealership will not return my phone calls or texts or emails about my car and wanting to trade it in for another one on there lot !!! they are crooked people and shouldn’t be a business I have so much proof information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

My vehicle lost power in the middle of operation , I also lost power steering and braking during this event.

My oil light came on and all it does is ding and there is no code showing up. The tire light keeps coming on amd off even though all the tires have the right amount of air pressure. The airbag light started coming on if I turn the car off and restart it does go off but sometimes it will turn back on.

The contact also stated that the brakes took longer than usual to stop the vehicle. Furthermore, there was a major fuel tank leak and the odor of fuel was noticed outside the vehicle. Lastly, the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and planned to be repaired once the contact ordered the correct fuel tank straps. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The failure mileage was 68,000.

I purchased a 2008 Dodge Avenger se 2. 4l a few months ago. Car has been shutting off on me while I am driving without warning. This happened on vity streets and highway. So far it starts back up but then will do it again unexpectedly. I have nearly wrecked due to this. I have also missed work 3 days so far this week. I called many dealerships and taken to shop with no solution. I have minor passengers in this car when it is occuring. The recall for this ossue was for Avengers 2007-2008 beginning April 15, 2007. . . My car states it was manufactured less than a month later with the same exact issue.

I was driving down road after filling gas tank car starting spitting, gas hand floating up and down, light flashing,.

On 3-31-19 me and my 2 daughters were driving on expressway, I started smelling burning and seen smoke coming from hood on driver side of car, it appeared to be coming from the engine under hood and pulled to side of road. I turned car off and I told kids to get out and we walked down expressway. I told kids to stay there and went to walk back to open hood and check it, on my way back to it, it had started on fire. I went back to my kids and called police. Within ten minutes the whole car was engulfed in flames.

Tl the contact owns a 2008 Dodge Avenger. When the heater was activated, hot air blew out of the driver's side vent and the rest of the vents blew out cold air. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

Water behind driver seat on floor board, locking mechanism for passenger door stopped working, rear tail lights completely stopped working, has a shifting problem.

Today is July 17, 2018. I discovered there were 6 recalls on the 2008 Dodge Avenger I purchased a month and a half ago, but the dealer never bothered to disclose any of this information to me. When I asked why the sensor light was on I was told it was nothing important, just the air pressure on the tires due to leakage, and all it needed was a cap on the valve stem. The caps on the valve stems of two wheels were replaced but the light stayed on. A few days after the purchase, I was driving about 66 mph when the car started jerking as if the fuel was gasping; it scared me to death! two weeks after the purchase, the engine light came on while I was driving on the freeway, and wouldn't go off; the car must be taken in for diagnostic which I'm told will cost almost $100 to find out why the engine light was on. I'm afraid to drive it with the engine light on and the other light blinking, so the car will just set in the parking area until I can raise enough money to pay for the $250 deductible on the extended warranty I purchased for $1,500, and the problem may not even be covered by the warranty. Also, first the dealer sold me the car without a key fob which I knew nothing about it until the horn started honking and lights started flashing when I unlocked the door to get back into the car a couple of days after the purchase. The sales person told me I could get one made at a discount, but when I went back to purchase it I was told I was mistaken. After shopping around it cost me over $100 to get one made (though the dealer would have charged me over $200. ).

When I first purchased this vehicle the engine light was on , I asked the sales person why and he said he hasn't been drove in a while . He took it for a ride and when he came back the light was off . A week later it came back on and I took it to auto zone they said it was the ignition coil . I fixed that and it still comes up randomly. Now my car still sounds horrible when I start it and I have to replace the starter and I've barley had the car since March . Also my car turns off randomly now while I'm in a reverse motion. Happens frequently. Also the tire pressure light is on and won't go away . I replaced tires and they say it's a sensor. A lot of problems and the sales person never told me there was any recalls on this vehicle.

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Dodge Avenger. The contacgt stated that the engine cradle and subrame prematurely had rust and fractured while driving a low rate of speed. , the vehicle was coased to PA arking area. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the engine cradle needed to be replaced. The manufacturer had issued 1 recall on the engine, 3 TSB on the engine but provided no solution to provide a remedy with no recall for this failure. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000. Dyd.

Car dies periodically sometimes 4 to 5 times in 3 miles other times it may go 25 miles and not die. Most of the time it cranks back others it has to sit for 5 or so minutes. Shows no codes in the computer could it be the module in the ecm?.

Running rich and code p2004 has to do with intake being stuck open.

Etc failure ( electronic throttle control ) approx. 100,00o on vehicle, highway going steady 65mph and light came on near total power failure. Restarted vehicle seemed to clear itself. Took to Dodge mechanic the computer says it did not happen. . Replaced the (etc) and car is still not operating correctly. . I have zero faith that the car is safe. Researched this etc issue which seems to be widespread.

While driving a lightning bolt in parentheses symbol popped up on the dash. Car began idling and would not exceed 10 miles per hour. Then the radio turned off and lights began to dim. So I parked the car and turned it off. The car would not start back up. I got it towed to a local shop for a diagnostic and was told it was the battery. So I got it replaced, that same day about 6 hours later, the exact same thing happened. Thank god we were not on the highway. I researched the symbol and a lot of related stories were discussed. I believe there is some need for a recall because others weren't as fortunate as us. Please take this into consideration because lives are at stake. Thank you.

Got home, put car in park & let go of the brake. Noticed I was rolling backwards so I quickly pushed on the brake. Looked on my dash & it indicated the car was in reverse, so I pushed on the gear shifter to make sure it was pushed all the way up, which it was. I then turned the car off & tried to turn it back on. The car then wouldn't start 7 the gears would not change. Looked online, seen there was a common issue with the pink plastic piece connected to the gear. Pushed the pink plastic piece in & it allowed me to switch gears when it was held in but I am still unable to crank my car & even when the gears are switched the dashboard says the car is still in reverse. Looked up recalls & sure enough there is a recall but of course when I entered my car information it doesn't apply to my car. I also have replaced the alternator 4 times in 3 years. I was told that it is a poor design that causes the alternator to wear down & lock up so quickly. I will ever buy another chrystler Dodge vehicle in my life. This car has by far been the worst investment of my life. I really hope something happens to get these cars off of the road forever before they end up killing someone due to the highly poor design of everything in them!.

I was unable to start my car as the key would not turn in the ignition, and I could not release the break or turn my wheel. I tried for 25 minutes. I rocked the car while it was in park and the back and forward and then the key turn and I was able to drive.

I was stopped at a red light; once the light turned green, I stepped on the gas to go and the vehicle jerked lightly; the warning light for which I now know is the throttle body sensor, blinked on and off; I attempted to give it gas but it would not go past 10 mph; the rpms went up but the speedometer would not move; I have not had any other issues with the vehicle after owning it for 5 years with regular maintenance; the brake down occurred at 101,700 miles; the vehicle is currently being repaired at Dodge dealership at a cost of $530.

I went to put my car in park and when I took my foot off the brake the car continued forward. I looked to see if I didn't put the car in park fully and the gear shift is in park however, the gear indicator says the car is still in drive.

The contact owns a 2008 Dodge Avenger. While driving at approximately 50 mph, the electronic throttle body warning light illuminated. The vehicle's speed decreased independently to 20 mph. The contact veered to the emergency lane and shut off the vehicle. The vehicle was able to restart, but the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to a dealer, but the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.

My wife was driving home going about 45 - 50 mph and the car just died. The rpm gauge flutters a little and then the car just died. She was able to coast into a parking lot and the car restarted and she drove home. The next morning she was driving on the freeway going about 10 - 15 mph and again the car just died. This time it was not easy to start. It took some time but she was able to get it started and get it off the freeway to an emergency parking spot. She had it towed to a shop and they could not find anything wrong with it. There were no codes coming up and they drove it around and had no problems. Needless to say, she is scared to drive it. We have seen all the posts on the internet about this same problem and have not heard anything from Dodge about it. We have owned the car for 3 1/2 years and it is just now occurring - it doesn't make any sense and I hope they can fix the car.

Stopped at a red light and a symbol on my dashboard appeared. The symbol was a lightening bolt in parenthesis which I've found out is the etc symbol. That along with my engine light came on together. After turning the car off the etc symbol did not reappear but the check engine symbol did. From looking through forums I've seen that this is a problem with numerous Dodge Avengers and to fix these problems cost large sums with no real conclusion of the reason for the symbols appearing in the first place. I would like to request that this problem be noted in the Avenger line and recalled. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Vehicle turns itself off occasionally while stopping at a traffic light.

Tl- the contact owns a 2008 Dodge Avenger. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle suddenly began to decelorate,the electronic throttle control warning light had illuminated and would not accelerate over 15 mph. The contact then coasted over to the emergency lane and shut the vehicle off. The contact then restarted the vehicle and the vehicle performed normally,however,the failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle had not been taken to a mechanic for a diagnosis of the failure and the vehicle had not been diagnosed of the failure and the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000. Gb.

The contact owns a 2008 Dodge Avenger. While traveling 40 mph, the vehicle began to decelerate on its own. The contact applied the accelerator pedal and all of the instrument panel warning indicators illuminated when the speed reached 50 mph. The failure occurred numerous times. An independent mechanic was unable to diagnose the vehicle and recommended it be taken to a dealer. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The VIN was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.

The electronic throttle control and the engine light are constantly coming on and going off. This has been going on for two weeks now. I called a Dodge dealer and they told me that the recall for this very same issue is not for my car. My VIN supposedly is not in the sequence Chrysler decided to recall. I don't know what to do.

The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic where they stated that the spark plugs and coil needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the throttle warning light remained illuminated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 23,500. The VIN was unavailable.

While I was driving home from work I was driving approx 50 mph and I lose power and my electronic control throttle light came on. I couldn't go faster then 5 mph and my rpm wouldn't pass 2,000 I pulled over on side of road turned off the car and try to restart but it would only run for a few seconds and cut out again. My home town mechanic said that the issue was the throttle body. The total cost in repair is roughly 500 dollars, and reading online there are more drivers out there having the same issue. I think Dodge should do a recall on there 2008 Dodge Avengers and up.

My Dodge Avenger had a throttle control light illuminated on the dash when first starting the vehicle. Thereafter, the car first would not go over 20 mph. Later this problem progressed. The car only had a small amount of power. It could get up to 30-40 mph on flat areas but struggled to maintain 5 mph on inclines. The vehicle would also shake violently when the transmission was in gear but the vehicle was stopped do to engine vibrations. I am currently in the progress of replacing the Avengers throttle body. Normally I wouldn't report this, but when I called the dealer to order the part he informed me that they have been replacing a lot of these lately due to problems.
