~tl the contact owns a 2008 Dodge Caliber. While driving, the contact heard a loud noise. The contact later discovered that the subframe was rusted through and caused the axle to fracture. Also, the top of the wheel was tilted inward. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic and the axle, subframe, one of the brakes, and the transmission fluid line were replaced. The dealer was not contacted. The contact called the manufacturer and was transferred to NHTSA. The failure mileage was 112,850.

Transmission failure under 100,00 miles. Took it to 3 different transmission shops and was told that this type of transmission (cvt) , which Dodge only uses for the Caliber is basically junk. Precision said that he's seen so many of these cars for the same problem. They don't rebuild them because of how they are made. I could take a chance on buying a remanufactured one at a cost of 1500. 00 plus 650. 00 labor and a year or so later have the same problem. Or a brand new one at a cost of 3000-4000 dollars. This is ridiculous. I don't understand why there isn't a recall. After researching online this is common problem with these cars. Some stating failure at only 36,000 miles. And they put these transmissions in both , 2. 0 and 2. 4 motors . There needs to be a recall on these cvt transmissions as they are junk and they know it. It gave me no warning. Went to work one day, tried to go to qwik trip on lunch. Car started making this loud noise when I accelerated, rpm's shot way up and then the check engine light came on. So drove it back to my job and more I accelerated the more noise it made. Had to get it towed from my job to my aunts house because it was closer than my house which is :35 minutes drive.

I heard a rumbling noise under the car took it to dealer and they said it wasn't safe to drive. Told me my whole rear end was rusted out and I paid $1600 for repairs. Now my car made a noise while my tires were going took it shop they said see a dealer on the way there my car stopped going forward. Good thing I wasn't on the highway. I could back into a parking space semi safely. Both problems in 3 months and my warranty is no more on my transmission.

I was turning onto a state highway when my brakes made the most awful grinding noise and my abs brake light came one. I immediately took my vehicle to the mechanic. I was told by my mechanic my brakes were bad and rotors needed to be replace and there was a sensor that had to be ordered before I could use the car after it was repaired. It had 11,000 miles!! I doubt my brakes were even bad at that point I think it was just a sensor after all. (after it cost me $480. 00 plus I had to rent a car for 3 days. My transmission kept surging at the stop lights from the day I got it at 1,471 miles. So it was probably bad from day one. I should have taken it right back to where I bought it, at least it would have been under warranty. I had my transmission replaced at 30,000 miles at a cost of $6,000.
Car started making loud grinding noise under hood while accelerating during regular driving. Had independent mechanic diagnose noise. Was advised gear inside transmission 'broken' transmission will have to be replaced, cannot be fixed. Caliber has cvt transmission which had widespread/known issues. The transmission should at least last the life of a car loan when the car us purchased fairly new. Dodge refuses to take ownership of problem although it is documented all over internet including youtube . If other manufacturers are assisting in repairing/replacing these transmissions, why can't Dodge. I am also interested to know of any class action suits to join based on other known issues, some I have fixed, some I hope I can get rid of the car before I encounter. Dodge marketed this car knowing of the faulty issues. . . Isn't that criminal?.
While driving my vehicle to work, the vehicle failed to go above 30 mph while accelerating, and a loud clunking noise began under the hood. I brought vehicle to the nearest mechanic who indicated it was a transmission issue and to bring to a dealer. There is no Dodge dealer near me that would tow the vehicle and the tow would have been at my expense, so I towed the vehicle for free to the dealer whom I purchased the vehicle and they diagnosed a major mechanical failure with the cvt transmission. Chrysler has been contacted, however they are being difficult to work with due to the vehicle not being at a Dodge dealer. There is no repairing the transmission it can only be replaced at a cost of over $4000! the vehicle only has 65000 miles.
As you start to drive the transmission begins to make a loud whinning noise as you speed up it got higher pitched. Took to dealer 10/12/12 after paying $112 for them to tell me the transmission was bad and needed replaced. The cost of that was going to be $3700 and there was no assistants by dealership. Informed me that it is a problem with cvt trans because it is unservicable. Took to local trans shop paid $3200 for a remanufactured, was suggested that we get rid of car because they feel it will happen again. Worst warr. Ever an trans of 18month 18,000 mile. Called Dodge directly and the declined to help in anyway told me that there is no problem listed with these cars or trans.

The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Caliber. The contact stated that there was a knocking noise coming from the hood of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the transfer unit was defective and would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but recurred shortly thereafter. The failure mileage was 82,500 and the current mileage was 83,000.
Left and right a post much too wide hindering ability to see where the curb is in relation to the car. It also hinders the ability to see if a small animal is in the affected view. In relation to the transmission, my transmission had to be replaced right after the warranty expired. I've had to have 2 tie rods replaced. An engine mount replaced, and a strut replaced, I am also on my second battery. This car has cost me a lot of money so far. I know it's 11 years old but I've never had this many mechanical issues with any car I've owned so far. The newest problem is a grinding noise that sounds like the wheel is going to fall off before I get home safely. There is a new noise as well that almost sounds like a radial tire with an issue but my tires are all fine. I am taking it to a good mechanic tomorrow. . . . Again!! at one point while driving at about 35 mph and starting to turn there was a grinding noise in the front end and it sounded like something fell off, I was turning left at the time. My abs brake light came on. I slowly went to the auto dealer, and they said there was a connector that broke and also a sensor they had to order. That cost over $400 plus I needed to rent a car to get home. Not a fan of the Caliber at all. I do love the style it's sporty and easy to drive, when it's not in the shop that is.

Transmission noise loud and slipping I have another 09 Dodge Caliber making the same noise and very slow to make it up to speed from a stop.
The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Caliber. The contact stated that the transmission was self-contained which made it impossible to maintain. While driving approximately 10 mph, she attempted to accelerate and the vehicle would not move forward. A year prior to the failure, she heard a noise in the transmission. When she called the dealer, she was told that the vehicle was fine. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer where it was at the time of the complaint. The dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced; however, the transmission was on backorder. The contact called the manufacturer and was offered no assistance. The VIN was unavailable. The current mileage was approximately 89,000. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.
My 2007 Caliber has leaking problems, it has been in the shop twice and still not fixed, also I just brought it in for a grinding noise, at 16,000 miles. The dealer 1st told me nothing is wrong come and get it, I did not get it I told them to keep it and drive it 1st thing in the morn. They did and heard the loud vibrating noise. They called me and told me it needed swaybar bushings and a new transmission. This Caliber is junk. With each supposed repair for leaking they had my car for 2 weeks total. Also this time with the transmission it has be 3 days. I have to pay for a rental car each time. The power door locks make a weird loud noise at times when unlocking the doors. I do not feel safe with my 4 kids in the car with me. I need a safe vehicle.
