54 problems related to air bag have been reported for the 1996 Dodge Caravan. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Air bag did not inflate on two occasion once in a front right side collision and once during front end collision. Nlm.
I was pulling out of a parking lot from a stop and the transmission went out. We had no warning whatsoever. The transmission cost us $1800. To replace. The air conditioner has been nothing but problems, we had a new compressor put in and have had the freeon replaced several different times. The clock spring which controls the airbag,cruise control and horn quit working and cost us $200. To have fixed.
False deployment of air bag.
After the consumer received the clock spring recall (02v293000) the vehicles horn shorted out. The dealer charged the consumer for horn replacement.
Replaced clockspring before receiving recall.
Clockspring failure. Also, performed recall 895 repairs om fuel rail seal.
The airbag in the Caravan will not work due to the clockspring.

I saw an article in the paper that said this was related to the clockspring assembly. I was preparing to have it fixed when I saw the article about your investigation and plan to contact the local dealer to see if they will repair for free.
Intermitant air bag lamp illumination. The lamp goes on and of when the steering wheel is turned. Suspect a broken wire in the clockspring assy. Nlm.

Consumer stated the cruise control does not function, due to a malfunction of the air bag and horn. . Consumer was informed that the problem is due to a defective clockspring causing the cruise control, and horn not to work.
