Steering Problems of Dodge Caravan - part 1

Started the vehicle one morning and drove up to a stop sign. I was in a city street making a left turn. Saw clear from both directions of any traffic. Accelerated and the bas,esp light, and traction light came on. At this point the vehicle wanted to stall, lost power, and steering became difficult. Stopped the vehicle and restarted the engine and accelerated again to about 20 mph and the vehicle repeated the stalling and hesitated to accelerate, once above 30 mph all lights continued on and the vehicle kept driving accordingly. Every time the vehicle is started up and drove from that date of Jan. 26,2021 the vehicle malfunctioning continues. I find this to be a severe mechanical problem and a danger to me, my family, and the public.

This morning at 7:58 am 7. 16. 2019, my car just stopped. Lost all power, could not steer, breaks became hard, no light came on indicating an issue. I was slowing down to go over a speed bump and the car just stopped. I put on my hazards and waited a moment restarted the car. Before that as I was driving the car seemed to feel like the engine was fluttering (?) or losing power then gaining it back. That flutter has been happening on and of for a couple of months, but no lights have come on indicating any issues with the engine. I have gone online and seen many, many posts with people complaining about the car just stopping, taking it to the dealer and dealer not being about to find a cause. This is incredibly dangerous, if this happens on a busy road or on the freeway someone could die!. Thank god my kids were not in the car and I didn't get hit!.

Steering wheel has a support bracket at the bottom where is you are not careful you can get your finger stuck in the wheel and you are not going to get it out easily. I did this by accident and had a difficult time getting my finger free while trying to steer the van. Also the space around the horn button is such if you have buttons on a sport's jacket those buttons can get caught under the horn button and makes controlling the steering wheel almost impossible. So when turning the wheel if any of these conditions happen you might not have the control of the steering that one would need. I just looked at the Dodge site and they still are using the same design on the steering wheel. It has happened to be very much but when I am more aware of this and I do not wear that jacket while driving this van.

Bought the van from cooks Volkswagen on may 7th, 2018. In the first 3 mths of me owning it I had to get 2 motor mounts and a starter put in. Then from that point it was all down hill! it has had 3 transmissions(cooks has done 2 and I took the van to thompson for them to do the third), hub assembly, welded the core support, power steering pulley and baring, struts for the truck hatch, I had to pay for out of pocket for power steering pulley and baring and one day of rental for a rental car! I have already called my lawyer and to have Chrysler/Dodge sued for selling an uninspected vehicle and filing a civil suit against your company!!!! as of may 13,2019 it is in the shop again and have another rental van after getting it back on Friday may 10, 2019 after it's 3rd transmission being installed and tried to drive it down 95 north on may 11,2019 and I got to 6th gear and it went straight into limp mode and had to take it back to thompson's to fix it!.

I bought a 2007 Dodge Caravan, the drivers side window switch seems to be burning out not allowing me to roll the window down on the electric switch and when it does, has a hard time trying to go back up. Then my drivers side passenger van door has a button on top in the front that you can hit it and its suppose to open that side of the van door, the van door also doesn't open from the inside it has to be opened on the outside posing a dangerous issue. But the other switch opens the passenger side van door fine. My 3rd row seats don't want to stay up , they want to lay down posing safety hazards. My bearings or something sound bad, and my passenger side door has to be opened on the inside and wo'nt open on the outside.

A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed by an independent towing company to a salvage lot where it was deemed destroyed. I was driving at approximately 45-50 mph and all the warning lights came on and in the next second the car just lost all power. Nothing! I pulled over and it started about 5 minutes later. Having to drive an hour back home on the highway was scared and my father being a disabled vet - this is the vehicle that is used.

The contact stated while driving 15mph when turning right or left, it felt like it had seized and when the contact maneuvered the steering wheel it was difficult. While driving on a dry road, the light on the dash board went on to indicate the car was sliding. . . The steering wheel locked up, I had no brakes, I had to glide to a stop. This happened 4 times in one day. I was able to glide to a stop, shut the van off, restart it only for it to happen again. I took it to my mechanic who stated it was a computer chip issue and that I would have to go to a dealer to get it fixed for approx $1,800. 00. I could've seriously injured and/or killed myself and those around me.

Takata recall. I was taking my children to school and the steering and breaking system completely locked up on me almost causing us to crash into a tree. I was able to push in the emergency break and get the car out of drive. I had no control over the steering nor the regular break. The car was in motion on a city street when the incident occurred.

Something wrong with my gas tank, it always stops me even if it's halfway. The driver seat belt doesn't stay well. The holes where the engine always comes off and there's a lot of smoke coming out. The headliner is coming off and there's like a sand falling to my kids. The break is not that strong.

The contact owns a 2001 Dodge Caravan sport. While attempting to make a left turn, the steering wheel suddenly locked and causing the steering wheel to make a popping noise. The steering wheel became difficult to turn. The contact had to use excessive force to move the steering wheel. Suddenly, the steering wheel did a hard release and returned to normal. The hard release caused the contact to receive injuries to the hand, wrist, and arm. Medical attention was needed. The failure recurred. The contact did not take the vehicle to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the there was no recall for the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 102,000.

While driving the van, the vehicle cuts off, steering becomes difficult and the traction control light comes on. I have to restart the car in order to drive. This is very dangerous to have a car to just "shut-off" while driving. This has occurred at least 5 times within the last week. I have been driving on different cities street and once while turning into major traffic. I contacted a Chrysler dealership service department and was told this particular car was not in a recall but this has been an issue for Dodge Caravans for many years from my research.

Van has shut off several times while in motion. Once while idle at a stop light. I spoke with a mechanic who told me it was the key fob. I changed to my spare key to see if this made any difference but the van shut off twice since then. There is a recall for this issue on the 2010 models but not 2011. This needs to be looked at ASAP. Luckily there has not been any traffic behind me when it has stopped while driving. I have 2 young children and this is a major safety concern. Does someone have to be seriously injured or killed before the recall gets extended to 2011 vehicles?.

"takata recall" thge serpintine belt keeps breaking or comming off while driving normally. I ve had it repkaced numberous times. They told me it was the pulley, I changed that. And the belt has come off again!.

I complained to dealer within the first year I purchased (2009) about my car cutting off while driving. I had it checked, nothing found. This only happened once in a while and progressively got worse. By the time I had recall notice in August of 2014 this happened quite often. I have driven a mile and car would cut off up to 5 times!!! sometimes I can go several miles and it not happen but its so bad now its pretty much every time I drive. When this occurs I cannot control steering or brakes. I had to rent a car to go out of town this past week. I pick my granddaughter up from school every day and I have nothing else to drive. I have contacted dealer many times who just put me off. They give me phone numbers for Chrysler who never answer. I am sure the condition of my car is more critical than most of the recalls. There will be an accident. I think I should be provided with something safe to drive until my car is fixed. I am on disability, on a fixed income and cannot afford to rent or buy a car. Please help me. All I get is the run around and put on hold!.

As I was driving, the electrical system on my 2005 Dodge Caravan wheelchair-accessible minivan failed completely, shutting down my power brakes, power steering, all dashboard indicators, and all vehicle lights (including the four-way flashers). Fortunately, the engine continued to run, so I was able to pull it to the side of the road. This has happened to me twice. The first time we took it to our regular mechanic, who could not find anything wrong. After it happened the second time, a Dodge dealer mechanic told me that the automatic braking system locking mechanism had failed and shorted out the entire electrical system and would cost $900 to repair. It also cost an extra $500 to replace the mechanism that the part is attached to because it had rusted so severely. These incidents were frightening because it was difficult to pull the car over to the side of the road without power steering and power brakes. It would have been worse if it had happened at a higher speed or at night since all my lights would have shut off. I would consider buying a newer wheelchair van if they were not so incredibly expensive.

At 7:40am, Thursday 3/5/ 15 I was driving my vehicle to go drop my son off at school the wiper blade started going on and off by themselves and then smoke started coming from underneath the horn on the steering wheel and then the airbag deployed hitting my hand and burning my left hand it filled my van full of smoked where we couldn't see I almost got into an accident I pulled the vehicle over roll the windows down clear it out all the smoke then I dropped my son off at school drove the vehicle to the closest dealership took pictures of the wiper blades, the airbag deploying, the time, the traffic in the background, to prove that I was not in an accident. The service advisor at larry h miller Chrysler Jeep was very rude told me that I would probably end up paying for this or that I could call my insurance company I left the vehicle at the dealership got a call later on this evening saying that they were going to contact Chrysler so I went ahead and called Chrysler myself got into an argument with them. They told me that they were going to investigate it and they put the vehicle on hold for any repairs until the investigation was done and now in the meantime I am a single father with five children I have no vehicle and they will not offer me a rent a car when I call and leave a message for the service advisor or the service manager at the dealership they ignore my phone calls and do not return my phone calls when I call Chrysler they tell me that they have sent me over to the accident claims department and that they are waiting for further word. I heard from another Dodge Caravan on her that this could possibly take up to 3 months of arbitration before I even have an answer as to when or how or where my vehicle will be repaired fixed or replaced.

I have filed 2 complaints regarding recall l25 for Dodge/Chrysler vehicles. 2009 Dodge grand Caravan completely shutting down while driving. Steering goes out, brakes out. Complete power out while driving. This is very dangerous and scary. I have children I have to take to multiple places. By the grace of god, the 5 times this happened, we . Were on slow moving, non busy roads near home. I have not yet experienced this on the highway. It would be potentially fatal. I usually drive in the lanes on the outside so if it occurs, I may be able. To pull off to the side. I have to take the highway daily to work. There were 5 occurrences, 2 in October 2014 and now recently 3 mores times close together, Dec. 20, 23 and Jan 11, 2015. I have contacted Chrysler customer service 3 times. I was advised to remove keys or anything hanging from fob, I have and this does not help the issue or is even the cause. I do not think they know why this problem is occurring. Chrysler really needs to speed up the recall process before there are fatalities.

The steering wheel became very difficult to turn. In addition, while operating the vehicle, the front bumper would suddenly detach from the vehicle and fall to the ground. While driving 55mph on i75 in cincinnati,OH, the engine suddenly shut off. While attempting to get the vehicle to the right side of the highway the steering wheel and the brakes could only be moved with great effort. The vehicle must be in the parked gear shift position before it can be restarted thus the necessity to get to the side of the highway so as to avoid a rear end collision. When getting to the side of the road the steering feels like it is locked. This sudden engine shut off while driving has occured several times before over the last approx. 2 1/2 yrs. The dealer does not know how to fix the sudden engine shut off problem. This leaves me with a vehicle that appears to be too dangerous to drive. I have requested the vehicle manufacturer to advise me as to how the vehicle can be safely driven. And also to advise me if the air bags will function normally after sudden engine shut off.

The van silently stalls. So far it has only happened at low speeds. When this happens it becomes very hard to steer and break. The first incident was during a u-turn with my 2yr old child and wife in the car. We ended up having to make use of the wheel chair ramp on the side walk. Mechanics have been unable to diagnose and unable to fix and this is still a problem.

When I tried to pull my Dodge Caravan (2000) out of the parking lot after a heavy raining day, I found the power steering didn't work. I could go forward or backward, but could not turn, or could turn only very slowly (I could hear the wheel kind of making clicking sound when I tried to turn). The belt keeps slipping off on my Dodge Caravan. This has been continual. The forums are full of these complaints. It is the serpentine belt. I have been back and forth to the mechanic. They try everything, but when it is wet, it comes off. I even try not to drive in rain, but after the rains, I drive a short distance and its off again. , I called the dealership that seems to take no responsibility for this. This is really dangerous, as it is very hard to turn the wheel. Fortunately so far, I have not been going at speed during these incidents. I had the tensioners tightened again last month, and its off again.
